UNITED STATES BENJAMIN BRENNER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
VANITY CASE.
Application led January 15, 1923.
One object 0f my invention is to provide a small and compact powder and rouge container, no larger than a powder box of small size and small enough to readily fit into a ladys pocket 4book or mesh bag, yet due to the telescoping features of the box, able to contain a rouge compact, and a combined mirror and partition member revolvably mounted therein, in addition to the powder compact.
A. further object of my invention is to provide in one element a combined mirror and partition member, adapted to retain the rouge pad in position when the powder is being used, and at the same time providing suitable rellecting means for the use thereof, and adapted to retain the powder pad in position when the rouge is beingused, at the same time providing suitable reflecting means for the use thereof. y
A further object of my invention is to provide a vanity box wherein both the powder and the rouge are readily accessible.
A further object of my invention is to provide by means of a singlemirror re volvably mounted between the powder and rouge compacts a reflecting means readily available for use as desired either with the powder or the rouge.
These and such other objects of my invention as may hereinafter appear, will best be understood by the description of one embodiment thereof, such as is shown in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, F ig. 1 is a perspective view of my vanity box in open position, with the mirror partially tilted.
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the centre of the box.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing in detailv how the bail member, the body member and the cover' are hingedly connected to;
Fig. is a detailed view of the hinge used,
Serial N0. 612,769.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout, 1 is the main body member of my device, normally stamped out of suitable material, adapted to contain the powder which is preferably in the form of a compaot2. 3 is the cover' member. In practice, more powder is used by the average woman than rouge, and at the same time it is desirable to construct just as small a box as possible, so that it may conveniently fit `in ai ladys pocket book or mesh' bag. Bearing these ends in view, I provide, usually by means of stamping, a central circular recess 4 in the cover member 3, large enoughg to contain Ithe desired amount of rouge which is preferably in the form of a compact 5. `Any convenient type of'hinge means may be used for connecting the cover and body members. AIn the construction shown, I provide the hinge-plates 6 and 7, adapted to be attached to the body and cover members 1 and 3, respectively. The hinge-plates 6 and 7 are provided at their ends with rounded projections 8 which are placed in holes 9 cutlin the body and cover members 1 and 3 respectively, and are bentover as shown at 8a in Fig. 1 to fasten the hinge-plates 6 and 7 thereto. The projec'tions 10v extending from the hinge-plates are bent over as usual to form the circular bearings 11 .for'the registration of the hingepin 12 therein. I' mount a bail member 14 on said hinge means between the body member 1 and. the cover member 3 as follows: To the central portion ofthe bail member 14, I attach themount 15, the lower end 16 of which is bent over to form a circular bearing for the registration of the hinge-pin 12 therein. It is thus obvious that the main body member 1, the cover 3, and the bail: member 14, are pivotally connected by means of the hinge-pin 12. The outer ends 17 of the bail member are provided with inwardly extending lugs 18. I provide a combined mirror and partition member 20, preferably stamped out of suitable material, and with a single mirror 21, suitably attached or bevelled to one side thereof. At diametrically opposite points on the outer periphery of said combined mirror and partition member 2,0,Y I provide the` holes 22, ywhich are adapted'to receivethe lugs 18, projecting inywardly/vfroun bail member 14, and thus revolvvably 'mount combined mirror and partitien 2G tfkielreen, convenient points in the. outer, periphery of kthereinbined ymirror andr Apartition.'member.,2O, I provide the lugs 23. and 23, the lug 23 adapted to register in a recess 24s, provided in the bail member lit, to retainsaid mirror and partition member 2O in position,` so as to provide suitable reflecting means when it is desired touse thepowder. then itis desired to use the rouge, it is merely necessary `to `turn 'the combined mirror. and partition .member 20 halfV way round, when the lug T23a will `register-in the' recess 24, and enablethe combined mirror and partition member ".20 to` :provide suitable reflecting means Vfort-he use of the rouge. Between the powder compact 2 and the combined mirror and partition.meinber20, I provide theremovable powdeiwpad A26,'and between the rouge' compact andthe combined mirror andzpartition,.member 20, I provide the removable rouge fpad 2,7 usually of a diameter equal-ftothat lof ,the Vannular recess 4., The mainbody .member 1, is provided with an inwardly odset circulary vertical flange portiony;28wbicli 'is (adapted totelesccpe into the Harige-ofthe cover 3, when the `said cover 3 andanain body member 1 lI are closedjtogether. :[t is thusobvious; that when my Avanity bo'Xiisclosed, the combinedrmirror and.',partition 1member 20, Aand .the powder and [rouge pad 26 :and12f, larefretained between .the .bodyandf cover members .1 andI 8, in compact. relation thereto. To retain the body.,` and cover members l and 3 in closed position, I. providethe ,body member l with a lug 30 adapted to register in the recess 3l, in the cover 3. f
'llo use.,the powder, throw open the cover member A3, lift up the bail member 14:, and revolvethe combined mi-rrorand partition member le until thelug 23 catches in the recess 24, throw=` back the bail member 14 on tbecover member 3. It is obviousthat the powder is thenfavailable for' use, and'tbat the mirror 21 will now pivide suitable reiiectingmeans for the use thereof, and thattheY combined mirror and ypartition member 20 lying aga-'inst ,the cover 3 will retain the vronge il, and rougepad 27, in position. By
vaiying'the length o f the opening arcof the cover 3, the mirror 21 mayjbeadju'sted for the 4most advantageous use thereof. Yhile tbeY box `is still open,` to use the rouge, lift up the bail ,member le, revolve the combined mirror andrpart'ition member 20'un't-ilfthe lug catchesdn'the recess 24,'fthrow over the 'baiLmcmber Maori the bodymember l, turnfthe vanity box aroundffand by again Y i .i varying thelength ofthe opening'arc, once again adjus'tftlie'mirror for the most/advantageogus use thereof in connection with the 'ron'gelf The combined mirror and partition member 20', will reist against ,the body l,
and retain the p owdengand powder pad '2G in position. When through using, close the box, and ,the lug .30, registering in the recess 3i, will,retain the body member and cover 3 in closed position.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the' speciiic v'embodiment shown, andthat various deviations may be made. therefrom without departing from the spirit `and .scope of the z rppended claims.
