TENT.
Application tiled September- To all whom z't mag/concern.'
Be it known that we, JosEPH CSAJAGHY and WALTER M. FARKAs, citizens of the United States, residing-'at Chicago, 1n the county of Cook and' State 'of Illinois, have invented la certain new and useful Ten't, of
which' the following is a specification.` Moreiparticularly the invention relates to a portable tent, the general object of the invention being to provide a collapsible tent and a carrying case therefor which may be used as a part of the tent, the case being' of a size readily portable, and preferably similar in size to an ordinary suit case.
Another object of the invention is to provide a collapsible tent and a carrying case therefor adapted tosupport the tent when the tent is erected.
'the sides of the case being'adpted to fold o form of the invention. 4
Inpursuance of the foregoing objects, we aim to provide-a tent and a carrying case,
outwardly to form the lower portion of the tent and being furtheradapted to provide a support vfor the upper portions of the tent.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed, description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which: "i
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of one form of the invention when erected. l i
Fig. 2 'is a side View thereof partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the carrylncase.
1g. 51s a plan view of the top frame. VFig. 6 is an enlarged view of a fastener. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified While wehave shown in the drawings and willherein describe -in detail the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is l to be understood that .we do not thereby `intend to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed, but aim to cover all modications and alternative constructions falling within thespirit and scope of the inveprilziplp as expressed in the appended claims. 1 to 6, the invention comprises generally a carrying case having hinged si es adapted hinged to the Side 42, (the hing e exemplary form illustrated in Figs..
1e, 1925. l serial No. 56,578.
-to fold outwardly to form the floor and a lower ortlon of one sid'eof the tent, an
extensi le pole supported in said'side portion and a canvas orother flexible covering suspended from the pole and adapted' to form an enclosure overlying the floor. Referring more particularly the' carrying case comprises s1des` 1 and 2, a top portion 3, a bottom 4, a split end having portions 5 and 6 and a solid end 7 the top 3 and bottom 4 being suitably es for the top being shown 'at- 8) andthe end 7 -likewise hinged,.internally, tothe side lat S). Suitable clasps 10 and 11 are adapted to secure the case closed. l
As illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3,' when the case is opened after releasing the clasps 10 and 11, the side 1 forms the major portion ofthe floor, the end 7 and side 2, which are ri idl1 secured together at right angles, are foA de outwardly, the end'7 formingI the rear portionof the floor and the side 2 the lower portion of the rear -side of the tent. The top 3 and bottom 4 which are hinged respectlvely to the' oppositeedgcs of the side 2 are folded outwardly tothe planeoi' the said sideI to increase the width thereof. A pair cfu-shaped frames 12 hinged as of the side 1 are adaptedto fold inwar when the' case is closed, and outwardly as` viewed in Fig. 3 to similarly enlarge the floor of the tentwhen the tent is erected. These hingedA sides ofthe case and the frames 12 may 'be vsupported in their outy wardly folded ositions by any suitable means, the pre erred means herein showncomprising rods 15 which are bent U-shaped t o and have portions 16 SFig. 3) adapte enterthrough horizonta apertures in lon itudinal ribs 17 on the side 2 and eye bo ts 18 secured tothe top 3 and bottom 4, simlilarly bent portions 19 on the opposite ends of rods being adapted to entera ertures 20 in the ribs 14 on the side 1 an 21 in the outer sides of the framesv 12.
A n .extension may 'also be provided forward of the tent to increase its stability in a 10o apertures front to back direction, herein being shown a board 22 slidable on the top surface of the floor 1 and through an aperture 23 in thev end portion 6.
As hereinbefore mentioned, the vinvention comprises also a canvas or other flexible dee1gn,"md. gew sections 25 and 26, an arm portion '5 27 an a 4 fastened to t trated bein 0f 5 edgesecure to the case and the outer edge "sie minded case by o an extensible pole. This pole,
" rallies 24 consists of telehook 28. `The lower section is adjnsta le longitudinally in atubular member 29 which is of substantial and is rigidl secured in a vertical y A'on centrally o theside portion 2 b 1 straps '30. A. thumb screw 31` in thread 'gement with the tube 29 is adapted to d the section in its adjusted position. Similarly, thumb screws 32 and-33. are pro- Jen h vided in the sections '25 and 26 respectively '15 to hold the-section 26 and arm `27,1n their extended positions.
The tent may be of various forms, the preferred form embodyin a covering of canvas or other sui'able flexib e material, rectangu- 90 lar in section similar to the floor andcomprising a pyramidally shaped top 34 sides 35, back.36and front portions 3 7 arid 37. The to portion 34 has an eye 38 at the apex thereoil'adapted to be suspended from the 25 snap hook 28v hung from the outer end of the arm 27. Ai'ectangular frame 39 suit ably fastened to the lower edge of this top- 34 is adapted to shape the -lower edge of 4the top and to provide a support forthe cano vas sidesof the tent. This frame is preferably hinged centrally thereof as at 40 so that'the frame may be collapsed to 'iitwithin the case,\a turn button 41 being provided to secure lthe frame in its expanded form:
When the tent is` erected, the canvas sides are preferably hung from the 'top frame 34 as by mea-ns of suitable fasteners42 such, for example, as those illustrated in Fig. 6.-
' The lower Aedge of the back 36 is similarly e inner edge of the portion 5 of the case,`a flap 43 being provided overlapping the case to prevent leakage. 'The lower edges of the sides 35 are fastened in a similarmanner to the outer edges ofk the 5 fra-mes 12 and at 44 and 45 to the'portions 3 andf4 of the case` 4 4A seat 46 ma be secured to the case side 2 as shown in i 2 and 3, the seat illusexible material with one supported by a U-shaped metal frame 47 having its opposite ends bent at rightangles and pivoted in the ribs 17. The seat is thus adapted to be folded against the side 2 andY to be secured in that position by a hook 48. -In the form illustrated the sides of the tent are provided with screened Windows 49 having closures 50 and also with pockets .51 ada ted.' to conveniently receive dresso articles. The front'portions 37 and 37 o f the canvas covering'have eyelets 52 spaced alternately along ',theadjacentedges thereof which eyeiets areadaptedto receive a cord or chain. 53 threaded .therethrough that the" est' ma' lul-seiiales by ofa padlock theV end of the chain to an eyebolt 55 anchored tion 6 of the case.
It will-'be ap that the tent as erein described is adapte arent from the foregoin to be self-supportin However, provision as guy ropes b providing eye bolts 56 anchored in the rame 34. Y
Assuming the tent to be erected as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, it ma be colla sed readily and quickly and enclbsed in t e carrying case by the following operations in sequence: Unfastenin the` padlock 54 and chain 53; removingt e y ropes; hooki the seat 46 in its folde position against t e side 2; unfastening the canvas covering from the case; colla sing the pole sections'25 and 26 into the .tu e` 29; removing the arm 27 and v 'the canvas covering from the pole; removing the bracerods 15; slidin the board 22 into the case; folding inwar 1y the frames 12; collapsing the top frame 39 vand folding the canvas covering to iit within the case; placing the canvas coverin with the top frame 39, the arm 25, the loc and chain, the gu ropes and theA rodsA 15 within the case; fol ing inwardly the edges 3 and 4 and the side 2 and securing the .sides in this closed rela- .tion by locking the clasps 10 and 11.
ward edge supported by means of metal rods 57 and 58 suit-ably anchored in the b oard 22 and frame 39 respectively and detachably secured together by means of connectors 59.
