L. J. HARTWIG LATCH FOR COMBINED CIGARETTE AND MATCH BOX HOLDERS Filed June 7, 1924 INVENTOR M %WZ//Q% ATTORNEY 1,579,366 ass-ice- LOUIS J'. HARTWIG, OF 'U'IICA; NEW' YORK.
LATCH FOR COMBINED CIGARETTE AND MATCH BOX HOLDERS.
Application filed June 7, 1924. Serial No. 718,651;
To (all whom it may; concern.
Be it known that LLoUIs J. HAn'rwic,
' formerly a citizen of Germany, andhaving declared my intention to become acitizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county ofOneida and: State of New, York, have invented certain new and useful I-m provements in a Latch for Combined Cigarette and Match Box Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadthereintothe accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a combined cigarette and match box holder and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a box adapted to hold both cigarettes and matches in such manner that moisture or dampness will be unable to reach them from without. To this end the box is made with a cover that is held closed in a hermetically sealed manner by a latch adapted to retain the cover in closed position and, yet, be sufficiently simple to allow the parts to spring apart in an easy way when desired.
The object will be understood by referring to the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of the device showing the cover partially opened;
Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of an auxiliary casing used;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing parts in elevation;
Fig.4 is a detail enlarged View of the locking mechanism used showing parts broken away;
Fig.5 is a detail enlarged view showing parts in section;
Fig. 6 is 'a detail enlarged view showing a perspective of a-locking casing used.
Referring'more particularly to the drawings, the box embodies a casing 1 adapted to contain an inner or auxiliary casing 2 which is free to move up and down in said outer casing. A flat spring 3 is attached at its center to the bottom of auxiliary casing 2 and has its free ends 4, 4 resting, without being secured, on the bottom inner surface of outer casing 1, whereby to urge or force auxiliary casing 2 normally upward, when cover 5 is opened and allow said auxiliary casing 2 to move downward when cover 5 is closed- Casing 2 is dividedby a partition 6 to form chamber 7 suitable for matches and chamber 8 for cigarettes.
1 Cover 5 is hinged at 9 to casing 1 and contains in its interior upper parta rubber cushion-or filling 10 adapted toaid in making an air and water tight union when cover in closed position. A shoulder 11 is formed about the upper edge of easing 1 for seating the lower edgeof cover-5.
A recess or hollow latch casing 12 is brazed or in some other suitable manner firmly attached to the lateral exterior end surface of cover 5. The interior of casing 12 is chambered and equipped with a tapering groove 13 that terminates at its upper end in such manner as to provide a shoulder or shelf 14 on either side thereof. Openings 15, 15 opposite each other in the side and opening 16 in the top of casing 12 are made to aid in forming the recesses within casing 12.
Shoulders 14, 14 are intended for'the disposition of the lateral projecting sides 17, 17 of spring tongue 20, when the locking mechanism is in locked or closed position. The lower end of spring tongue or latch 20 is housed within chamber 21 formed by casing 22 that is brazed or otherwise attached in a rigid manner to the lateral exterior end wall of easing 1. Casing 22 tapers slightly from its upper edge towards its lower end so as to recede towards the surface of casing 1. The lowermost end of spring tongue or latch 20 is mounted by brazing or in some other suitable manner to the inner surface of casing 22 as at 23. An aperture 25 is made in casing 23 adjacent its upper edge. Aperture 25 is adapted for the projection of lug 26 having an annular flange 27 to prevent the withdrawal thereof. The inner end of lug 26 rests against the adjacentsurface of tongue 20, whereby a pressure on the outer or free end of lug 26 will press spring or latch 20 inward to withdraw sides 17 17 of latch 20 from shoulders 14, 14. This movement of sides 17 will release the locking mechanism and cover 5 will thereupon fly upward, because of the pressure thereagainst by auxiliary casing 2, which is in turn actuated upwardly by flat spring 3.
The operation of the device is effected by filling chamber 7 formed by partition wall 16 with matches and chamber 8 with ciga- "rettes. For this purpose, auxiliary casing 2 can he removed from casing 1 if desired. When reinstated, cover 5 is pressed down upon easing 1 against shoulder 11, thereby closing cover 5 in a hermetically sealed or air and water tight manner. In closing cover 5, latch 20 will ride up into the cham her Formed in casing 12 and sides l7, 17 thereof will snap over upon shoulders 14-, 14, whereas the slrmk 19 of tongue 20 will rest in groove 13, whereby to lock cover 5 in closed position. In order to open cover 5, it is necessary only to push with the finger on the outer end oi lug it whereby latch 20 will be actuated to move sides 17, 17 thereof tree from shoulders 14, 1 1-. Immediately sides 17 are free from shoulders 14-, 14, cover 5 will fly upwardly by reason of the pressure of spring 3 on auxiliary casing 2 as heretofore explained.
Members 30, 30 are attached to one of the sides of easing 1. Said members 30 are adapted to allow casing l to be mounted upon a belt, whereby the device can be carried about by the user when in bathing or elsewhere.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
in a combined cigarette and match box holder, a cover, a casing to which said cover is hinged, a hollow latch casing mounted to said casing, a tapering groove in said casing, shoulders formed in said casino at the end of said groove, a latch having laterally projecting sides adapted to engage said groove and shoulders.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
LOUIS J. HARTVVIG.
