Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK A. TORMEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHlR'T-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,890, dated December 15, 1874; application filed May 15,1874.!
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. TORMEY, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Mens Wearing Apparel, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a device which may be used either with a shirt separately, or as a part thereof; its object being to furnish a bosom or front which shall be relieved from strain, having a better fit than the ordinary kind, and which shall act as a brace or support to the person.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front View of myinvention, Fig.2 being a back view, and Fig. 3 illustrating a modification. of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention in all the views.
Ais the shirtbosom, consisting of two pieces connected by a collar-band, c, fitting around the neck of the wearer, one part of the bosom overlapping and beingattached to the other by buttons or studs b, the attachment at the collar-band being at b. Entending laterally from the bosom are two fia 'ps, B B, one being at either side thereof, fitting around and to the sides of the wearer, and fastening behind him by a lace or other suitable means. The ends of the flaps are stiffened vertically by whalebone or steel stay-rods c, or by some other similar method. 0 G are two parts of a strap, connected, by buttons or other means, in front, between the bosom and the person ofthe wearer.
The strap 0 G is made adjustable in length by placing the fastening devices in different positions.
Fig. 3 shows a modification of the invention as above described, the bosom being in one piece and the collar-band open at the rear, and joined by but-tons or other device. The studs or buttons used in the bosom in place of those I) would be simply for ornament. D is a fastener, connecting the bosom to the upper button of the drawers, the bosom by this means being kept from working up and puffin g out.
When used as a part of a shirt, the bosom is connected therewith in the ordinary way, the flaps extending from the sides of the bosom within the shirt. The shirt is shown in Fig. l by the dotted lines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The bosom A, either opening in front, or in one piece, joined with the collar-band at, opening at the throat or behind, and flaps B B, connected to the sides of the bosom, and adapted to be secured together behind the wearer, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the bosom A, flaps B B, and straps O O with their fastenings, as set forth.
3. The stiffening-rods c, in combination with the bosom A, flaps B B, and collar-band a, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name in the city of Baltimore this 13th day of May, A. D. 1874.
FRANK A. TORMEY.
