Be it known that I, HORACE H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States,4 residing at San Francisco, in the county of SanFrancisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification'.
The prevent invention relates to an improved pump having oscillating pistons and which is constructed in av simple and compact manner7 the said pump being also inexpensive as to construction and operation.
One of the objects of the linvention is to provide a pump of the characterr vdescribed which may bel readily assembled and disassembled and in which the wear on the working parts is minimized.
The invention takes into consideration the particular construction and relative arrangement of the pistons and associated parts, due to which, the pump is'made exceptionally strong and durable and has a comparatively great pumping capacity in proportion to the amount ofpower required to opera-te it. v
Tith the above' mentioned and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in th-e accompanying drawings, and set fortlr in the claim'shereto appended, it being understood that various changes inthe form, proportion', size and minor details of construction within the scoperof the claims may be resorted to without departing from the' spirit or sacrificingaiiy of the advantages of the invention.

The embodiment of the pump shown rin the accompanying` drawings comprises a semiecylindrical pump chamber Amade up of a semi-cylindrical body 1 provided with removable end walls or heads 2 and 3 bolted thereto. The pump chamber body 1 is bolted onto the upper side of an intake chamber Li, the upper wall 5 of which chamber constitutesthe lower wall ofthefpump chamber.
The end walls of the intake chamber are' formed integral therewith and the removable walls 'extend over and lie against theouter sides ofthe end walls of the intake chamber.
Flanges 6 and 7 are providedl on the intake chamber and are engaged by lower eXtremities of the walls 2 and 3, being bolted thereto. The intake chamber is provided with an intake opening 8 at its lower-side, around which opening there is provided an attach'- ing flange 9 to provide for connecting the intake chamber wthV a .suitable conduit or pipe, not shown.
The intake chamber Ais provided wth suitable legs 10 which adapt ythechamber as a base orsupport for the pump chamber. In the upper side of the pump chamber there is provided an outlet or discharge opening 11 around which .is provided an attaching flange 12 corresponding to the flange 9.
rlhe pump .chamber is divided into two compartmentsdesignated Aand 13 by an upright partition 13', each of which compartments constitutes a pumpA chamber. EX- tendi-ng through the pump chambers A and B are shafts 14; and 14e having suitable bearings 16 and 17 inthe end walls 2 and'partitions 13. Surrounding and keyed to these shafts are sleeves 18y and 18'.' 'These' sleeves have semi-circular bearings 19 provided o-n the wall v5. The sleeves' are provided with longitudinal ribs or projections 2O and 20,

These projections 2O and 20 are adapted to engage in grooves 22 extending longitudinally in the web portions 23 which join the two pistons or impellers 24 and 25 of they pai-rs designated C and Dand located inthe compartments A. and B respectively. By means of screw bolts 26 these web portions are fastened to the sleeves 18, the said bolt-s being turned onto the ribs or projections, thereby securely butJ removably fastening the pairs of pistons to the shafts. The bearing of the under sides of the webs against the shoulders 21 insures a. rigidand secure joining ofthe pairs of pistons with the sleeves. rlhe two pistons of each pair extend substantially ai; right angles to one another and each is provided with an opening 27 in which a bushing`28 is secured, there being` a` spider 1 29 entending scross said bushing; Secured onto the center of the spider is ai stem 30; on

The pair ,D of the pistons located in the chamber B is arranged in offset relation to the pair C in the chamber A. This arrangement provides for the commencement of the pumping oriinpelling action of one of the pistons the pair C before the completi-on of the pumping stroke of one of the pistons of the pair D., rlhis provides for a continuous iloiv of liquid from the pump.
In the Wall 5 in communication with each of the pumping compartments A and B, is a pair of intake openings 3G and 37 in which flanged bushings 33 Y, secured, These openings'are provided with valves 39 and 40 which seat upon the upper sides of the bushings. Stems 4l depend from the valves through spiders 42 carried by the bushings and have abutment members 43 on their lower ends against Which the loiver ends of expansion springs 44 engage. These springs surround the stems and at their upper ends abut the spiders 42. These valves are alternately opened and closed by the action of the impellers or pistons.
Mounted on the ends of the shafts 14 and 14 are crank arms 45 and 46, to the outer ends of which pitmen 4? and 4S are connected. These pitmen are connected With crank arms 49 and 50 lined to a shaft 51 journaled in bearings 52 carried by the pump. A gear 53 is fixed to the shaft 51 and meshes with a similar gear 54 fixed to a shaft 55 journaled in bearings 56 on the pump casing. Any suitable means, not shown, may be employed to` drive the shaft 55. The crank arms 48 and 50 are set at different angles as are the crank arms 45 and 46. This provides for the timed operation of the pairs of pistons designated C and l).
In the operation of the pump, when the pistons 24 and 25 of the pair D are in the position shown in dotted Vlines in Fig. 1,
the piston 24 is in substantially the middle of its pumping stroke vvith the valve thereon open. rThese pistons are moved in the (li-f rection shown by the dotted arrow. At this time the valve on the piston 25 of the pair D is closed by the pressure of the liquid.

the piston 25 and into the space between the pistons 25 and 24 out through theopening l1.v During this movement of the piston, the piston 24 sets up a suction action against and opens the valve`40 in the chamber A and induces a charge Iof Water through said open valve into said chamber A behind the piston 24. This charge is subsequently forced through Athe valve on the piston 24 when said piston moves in the opposite vdirection on its Working str k The pistons, due to the drive arrangement, are oscillated as described and due to the fact that one piston of each pair ceases its pumping operation, a continuous discharge of liquid from the pump is provided for. The arrangement of the pistons is such that one piston of each pair is at all times dra-Wing in a charge of liquid to be pumped during the pumping of a previously drawn in charge by the other piston.V
By having pairs of pistons arranged as described, the pump operates smoothly and continuously and has a greater capacity.
I claim:
l. An oscillating pump comprising a semi-cylindrical pump chamber having an outlet opening on its upper side, an intake `chamber' around which the pump chamber is mounted, the upper Wall of Which intake chamber comprises a lower Wall of the pump chamber, said upper Wall having intake openings therein, valves controlling said openings, shafts extending into said pump chamber, a partition dividing said pump chamber into separate pumping chambers, each of which communicates with said discharge opening and with openings in said upper wall, a pair of pistons fixed to each shaft and located in each of the separate chambers, the pistons of said pairs being extended substantially at right angles to one another, openings extending through said pistons and valves controlling said openings.l

An oscillating pump comprising a pump chamber having an outlet opening on its upper side, an intake chamber above which the pump chamber is mounted, the upper Wall of which intake chamber comprises the lower Wall of the pump chamfixed to each shaft located in each of the separate compartments, Which pistons eX- tend at right angles to one another, openings extending through said pistons, valves controlling said pistons, the pistons of one pair being angularly related to the pistons of the' other air said shafts having a bearinvi eno 2.2 gagemeiit With onev another at their inner ends and subject to oscillation in opposite directions and means for so oscillating said shafts.
