EXTENSION TABLE.

Be it known that we, ANTHONY VOLrr and FRANK Pane, citizens of the United States, residing at Dunmore, in the county of Lacliawanna and State 01"" Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Extension Tables; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an extension table wherein the extension table portion includes a plurality of hinged sections which are adapted to lie flush with the top of the table when extended and to lie beneath the table top when the table is closed.

The various features of novelty and invention will appear from the detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part 01: this specification and will be particularly set forth in the claim appended hereto.

In the drawings numeral 1 indicates the relatively fixed table portion, and 2 the movable or extension portion or portions of the table. The central portion 1 has suit able supporting legs secured thereto and the movable table portion or portions 2 are also provided with supporting legs 4.

The extensible table portion 2 includes a plurality of narrow strips or sections hinged together on their under sides in any suitable manner as by flexible strips 6 to which the under surface of said sections is secured. One end of the flexible strip 111011 may be a metal ribbon is secured to the non-hingeable portion of the table portion 2 as will be readily understood by reference to Figs.

Secured beneath the top of the fixed table portion 1 is a frame comprising two parallelly extending portions 7 Extending between these portions for the purpose of serial No. 698,242.

bracing the same is a bar 8 to which the legs 3 are secured. in Fig. 3 the bars are shown provided with an upstanding flange 9 along the outer face of said bars, the leg-supporting bar 8 being confined between said upstanding flanges.

The terminal ends of the frame bars 7 are connected by a bar 10 on which is a hook 11 adapted to interlock" with a latch 12 on the movable portion when the table is closed. The extensible table portion is supported by the frame bars 7 by means of extensible members generally indicated at 13, these members being of more or less common construction and need not be further described.

The mechanism by whichthe hinged sections of the extensible table portion are taken care of will now be explained. Each of the parallel frame bars T with a slot 15 within which said hinged sections may enter when the table portions are closed. The slot opens upwardly as indicated at 16 inwardly of and below the adjacent edge of the top of the table portion 1.

The under surface of the table top 1 adja cent the top oi": the slot 16 is inclined upwardly as indicated at 17 and such inclined portion is preferably provided with a metal The upper side of the bar 7 including the extension 18 forms a runway over which the hinged section 5 may be moved as will now be readily understood. In order to the more effectively hold the hinged section 5 to a given path is provides a laterally ext-ending member 20 from the runway constituted by the upper surface of the bar 7 and the extension 18 thereof. This member 20 is adapted to be engaged by inwardly extending members 21 secured to the under surface of the hinged section 5. Said members 21 may conveniently take the form of rollers as shown in the drawings. This arrangement insures that the hinged sections a will operate smoothly especially in rounding-the end of the extension 1801i their way into the slot 15.

V is provided In order to hold the hinged sect-ions 5 as close as possible to the slotoverhanging portion 17 of the table top 1 there is provided a spring-pressed roller 25 at either end of the said overhanging portion 17. These rollers contact with the flexible elements or tracks 6 which serve to hinge the members 5 together.

While We have shown the flexible members G at either end of the hinged sections, it is to be understood that as many flexible elements will be provided as may be necessary. For convenience of illustration the sections have been shown only at the ends.

What we claim is:

In an extensible table, fixed leg supported and extensible top sections, parallel. bars secured to the under face of the fixed top section and provided With horizontally arranged substantially U-shaped slots, flexible parallel strips carried by the opposite ends of the extensible section, a plurality of parallel strips extending entirely across the ex tensible top section and having their ends connected to the flexible strips to hingedly support the latter, such strips extending through the U-shaped slots and adapted for movement therein, members carried by the bars and extending laterally therefrom along the inner edge of the slots, sets of rollers carried by the under face of the strips and disposed upon opposite sides oi the bars and movable over the said members, and spring urged rollers supported upon the under face of the fixed top section and bear ing against the under face of the strips.
