Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD Es- GOTT, a subject of the Kingof Great Britain, residing at Oaknoll27, Central Hill, Upper Norwood, London, in the. county of Surrey, England, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Power-Transmitting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. e v o This invention' relatesto power transmitting apparatus of the kind described with reference to'Figures 3 and 4 of thel drawings of my United States Patent No. 1507369, in

getherby a train of sun and planet wheels hereinafter referred to as the originaltrain.
According to the present invention a train of sun and planet wheels additional v,to the original train of sun and planet wheels is provided withthe object of giving a definite and positive low-gear drive which preferably comes into action automatically when the resistance to turning of the driven element is such that, ordinarily, the planet wheels of the original train would roll round the sun-wheel of this train without rotating the latter sun-wheel. 'Ihe additional train comprises a sunwheel which is of smaller 'diameter than the sun-wheel of the original train and which by the provision of a ratchet, free-wheel or other device is made capable of rotation in one direction only. Upon the paddle spindles are rigidly. mounted planet wheels which engage the additional or smaller sun-wheel and which are tlierefore of larger diameter .than the planet wheels of the original train. In one constructional form the enclosing drum may be rotatable the original sun-wheel being attached thereto, and the additional sun-wheel may be mounted rigidly .upon a sleeve which extends outside the drum and has a ratchet wheelengaged by a pawl carried by any convenient fixed support. I may replace the said ratchet wheel and pawl by a brake drum and a brake band or brake shoes; the band or shoes may be automatically applied by a 4cam when the additional sun-wheel tends to turn in the opposite direction to the primary .or driving shaft or the said band or shoes may when required be applied by means of a hand lever or a pedal. In a modified construction for obtaining va positive low gear drive the additional sunwheel and the aforesaid enclosing drum are made rigid with the primary or` driving shaft, the original sun-wheelis made rigid with the secondary or driven shaft, whilst the side plates or spiders which carry the spindles to which the twosets o f planet wheels are rigidly connected, are not ,definitely fixed to either the primary or the secondary shaft units, these side plates or spiders being controlled by a pawl and ratchet `arrangement or by a brake as aforesaid.
In order that the said inventionl may be clearly understood and readily carried into i effect, the same will now.l be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis an axial section shewinor `diagrammatically one form of apparatus 1n accordance with this invention,

Figure 3 is a view similarto Figure 1 shewing diagrammatically another form of apparatus in accordance with this invention.
In the accompanying drawings those parts which correspond to equivalent parts of F igures 3 and 4 ofv the drawings ofmy aforesaid Patent No. 1507369 are represented by the same reference numerals, that is to say 1 is the enclosing drum containing a quantity of liquid (such, for example, as glycerine) and-2 is the shaft on which the said drum isfreely mounted; 3, 3 are two of several` spindles provided with vanes 4, 4v and rotatably carried by side plates or spiders 5 and 6 which, in the construction shewn by Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings, are
keyedto the shaft 2. The paddle spindles 3,'3 have fixed thereto the original planet wheels 9, 9 meshing with the original sunwheel 8 which in Figure 1 is fixed to one of the end walls 1a of the drum V1.
Referring to Figure 1, each of the spindles 3, 3 has rigidly mounted thereon an additional planet wheel 12 meshing with an additional sun-wheel 13, the latter sunwheel being of smaller diameter than the original sun-wheel 8 and the additional planet wheels 12 beingtherefore of larger diameter than the'aforesaid original planet wheels 9. v The said additional sunwheel 13 is rigid with a sleeve 14 which extends` outside the end wall ures 3 yand 4 of my aforesaid patent, when the resistance to r'otation of the paddles 4 is balanced by the resistance to rotation of the original sun-wheel 8, then the planet wheels 9 will, without rotating, carry the sun-wheel 8 round at the same speed as the driving element, and the planet wheels 12 of the additional train will also carry round the sun-wheel 13 with which they are in mesh, the ratchet wheel 15 and pawl 16 being so `arranged as to permit movement in this direction. When however' the resistance of the sun-wheel 8 to turning increases, and the degree of rolling movement of the planet wheels 9 aroundthe sun-wheel 8 likewise increases, a point will be reached when thc additional planet wheels 12, being of larger diameter than the original planet wheels 9, will tend to rotate the additional sun-wheel 13 in the opposite direction. The 'latter sunwheel however cannot rotate in this direction ,as it is held by the pawl 16. lIt will therefore be seen` that under these conditions, owing to the different gear ratios of the two trains, the sun-wheel 8 will .be driven positively but at a low angular speed compared with the angular speed of the driving element comprising the spiders 5 and G, the paddles 4 and the planet wheels 3.
Referring to Figure 2, the sleeve 14 of Figure 1 has keyed or otherwise secured thereto a `brake drum 17 with which a brake band 18 is intended to co-operate. One end of this band is connected at 19 to one arm of a lever 20 which is pivoted at 21 to a fixed support, and the other end of this band is connected by a rod A2,2 to the other arm of vthis lever.` The latter arm is extended and against it bears an operating lever 23 .pivoted at 23a to the fixed support. This operating lever has a tailpiece 24 with which a cam 25 on the brake drum 17 co-operates. Thus when the sun-wheel 13 commences to rotate in the direction of the arrow in Figure 2 the shoulder 26 on the said cani will come against the tailpiece 24 and rock the operating lever 23 which operates the lever 2O to apply the brake band 1.8 and thus prevent further rotation of the sun-wheel 13 in the said direction; rotation in the opposite direction is permitted as the cam 25 merely rocks the operating lever 23 in an anti-clockwise direction without applying the brake band. Instead of the said automatic cam arrangement and the Vpawl and ratchet arrangement of Figure 1, a brake applied when required by means of a hand lever ora pedal may be. provided. For example the lever 20 may be extended to form a handle as shewn in broken lines in Figure 2.
Referring to Figure 3, the additional sunwheel 13 lis made rigid with .the shaft 2 as is also the drum 1, whilst the original sunwheel 8 is made rigid with a shaft 2a. The side plates or spiders 5 and 6 carrying the spindles 3, 3 to which the paddles 4 and the two sets of planet wheels 9 and 12 are rigidly connected, are not fixed to either of the shafts 2 and `2a. One of these side plates is made rigid with a sleeveI 6'l which extends throughone `of the end walls 1a on the drum and is formed with a ratchet wheel 6", a pawl co-operating with this ratchet wheel serving the same function as the pawl 16 of Figure 1. Instead of this pawl and ratchet arrangement in Figure 3, an automatic cam operated brake (or a hand operated brake) as hereinbefore described, could be employed, the brake drum replacing the ratchet wheel 6" in the manner described with reference to Figure 2.
What I claim and desire lto secure by `Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a power transmitting apparatus of the kind referredto, the combination with a driving elementv and av driven element, of a drinn containing a quantity of liquid, a sys- -tem of paddles arranged within said drum,
supports in which said paddles are rotatably mounted, a sun-wheel on one of said elements, planet wheels connected to said paddles and meshing with said sun wheel, an additional sun wheel of smaller diameter than the forme-r sun wheel, and other planet wheels connected to said paddles and meshing with said additional sun wheel.
2. In power transmitting apparatus the combination with the driving element and the driven element, of a drum rotating with said driving element and containing a quantity of liquid, a system of paddles arranged within said drum, supports in which said paddles are rotatably mounted, said supports loosely mounted with respect to both the driving element and the driven element, a sun wheel on said drivenelement, planet ,wheels connected to said paddles and meshing with said sun wheel, an additional sun wheel of smaller diameter on said driving element, 'and other planet wheels vconnected to said paddles and meshing with said additional sun wheel.
3. In power transmitting apparatus, the combination with the parts claimed in claim 2, of means for preventing the rotation of the supports in one direction.
4. In power transmitting apparatus, the combination with the parts claimed in claim 2, of a sleeve connected to one of the supports and extending beyond thel adjacent end wall of the drum, and Vmeans co-operating with said sleeve for preventing rotation of the supports in one direction.
5. In power transmitting apparatus, the combination with the parts claimed in claim 2, of a brake member connected to one of said supports, a braking element adapted to co-operate with said brake member and means for automaticallyapplying said brkaing element when the supports commence to rotate in one direction, the said means perwith said sleeve, a braking element adapted mitting free rotation of the supports in the to co-operate With said brake member and l0 other direction. means for automatically applying said 6.
