Application filed August 10, 1925. Serial No. 49,214.
in tying together the wooden forms for ref intorced 'concrete walls.
A tool for this purpose is shown in my Patent Number 1,543,491, issued June 23, 1925, and in my application Serial Number 14,010, tiled March 9, 1925, now Patent 1,- 551,457, dated August 25, 1925.
The object et the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation oi a device et this character.
' l find in the practical use et this tool that to properly twist the ends of the wires they should be engaged by a relatively broad suriace projecting inwardly from the :tace plate of the tool, so that the twist will not occur so close to the edges ot the face plate as to strain the wire and cause it to break. A further feature et the present invention is the use of a slotted gripping member whereby the wire can be more readily inserted.
One torni which my invention may as sume is exempliiied in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 shows a perspective view ot a de vice embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view oi a wooden form for concrete walls, showing the device of the present invention in position 'for twisting the tie wires;
Fig. 3 shows a vertical sectional view through a portion et the ornnwith the de vice of the present invention shown in side elevation thereon;
Fig. i shows a sectional view ot one end of the twisting and tightening tool.
The vtool ot the present invention inchicles an arm 10 having a. handle 11 at one end and a wedge-shaped member 12 at the opposite end. At right angles to the wedgeshaped member is a face plate 13, and carried on the wedge-shaped member .slidably is a clamping loop 14. kThis loop is for the purpose of gripping the tree ends of a looped wire 15 used for tying together the walls 16 et a wooden torni. The face plate 123 is intended to be placed against the post or studdi'ng members of the rtorni, adjacent the projecting ends et the wires 15. The tree ends et the wires are then inserted between the loop 14 and the wedge-shaped member 12, the loop 14: being retracted to facilitate insertion of the wire ends. To further expedite the insertion of these wire ends I form a slot 17 lin the loop adjacent one end. One end of the wire can be threaded through the loop while the tool is being. placedin position against the studding member and thereafter the other wire end lcan be slipped through the slot 1i" without botheringvto line up the wire ends er .straighten them out. The clamping loop is then moved forwardly to grip the wire.
ends,` and tightening of the wire is performed by pressing downwardly on the arm ot the tool with the heel ot' the tace plate 13 engaging the studding element.
When the wire is sufiiciently tightened it is necessary to twist the tree ends together; and tor this purpose I provide `a wing or lng 18 on the face plate 13 near the upper end thereof. This winger lug is preferably flattened and curved as best shown in Fig. 1, so that one wire end lies bcneathone end ot the wing and the rother wire end overlies the opposite' end of the wing. This wing being positioned on the face plate and having appreciable width, acts to space the tace plate out from the 'torni and leave room for forming a` twist without unduly straining the wire or drawing it tightly against the sharp edges et the tace plate, as in my prior application above referred to.
It will be seen that I have provided a tool which is strong and rugged and inexpensive to construct. ln addition it is capable et faster operation and is not so liable to break the wire as are the particular designs shown in my earlier applications.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
1. A tightener and twister for the purpose stated, comprising an arm having a gripping member at one end for engaging the tree end oi' a Awire loop, a tace plate on said gripping member, and a` wing or lug projecting at right angles from said face plate andvpositioned so that one wire end lies beneath one end of the wing and the other Wire end overlies the opposite end of said Wing.
2. A tightenei' and twistei` for the pui'.- pose stated, comprising an arm, a wedgeshaped member on the'end of the yarm, a clamping loo-p slidably mounted on the Wedge-shaped member for gripping the ends of a tie Wire, a face plate extending at right angles to the Wedge-shaped member, and a, flattened wing or 111g extending at 10 right anglesA from the` face plate to'engage the Wire for twisting the latter.
