Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. DAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented' certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Bookbinding, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel process for binding `the signatures or sectionsof a book together and has for its primary object to provide novel means whereby the entire book can be handled as a unit during the binding process instead of handling each signature or section independently.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel book binding process which will simplify the art of book binding and effectively decrease the cost and time of making a book and the necessity of employing complicated machinery for making and uniting the sections or signatures. Y

'With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated `in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings,

lReferring` to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughoutv tlie several views the letter A generally -indicates a hook constructed in accordance with my improved process. The book A includes a plurality of book sections or signatures 10 which are bound together in accordance with my invention, which will now be described, to form a lcomplete book unit after which is applied to a conventional cover 1l.
The improved method or processof constructing the book permits allof the sections or signaturesy t0 be handled as a single unit, eliminating the necessity of handling the sections or signatures separately.
In carrying out the invention all of the book sections or signatures 10 are placed one upon the other in proper sequence and lined np byy any suitable means auch as icc 5. The method of forming a book which consists in taking a plurality of book signatures and aligning the same together `to form a book section having diagonally eX- tending kerfs across the back of the book section at an angle to the ends of the book section, applying a coat of adhesive to the back of the book section placing binding cords in the kerfs, applying asecond coat of adhesive to the back of the book and in said kerfs, drawing the terminals of the cords down the sides of the book and securing the same in place by an adhesive, applying end sections to the main book section which consists in a vsingle sheet and a double sheet connected by binding cloth.
6. A book including a plurality of book signatures having kerfs extending diagonally across `the backthereof and binding cords anchored in said kerfs.
7. A book including a plurality of signatures placed together in proper alignment having kerfs extending diagonally across the saine at the back thereof, said kerfs said signatures in parallel relation to the backs of said signatures.
8. In a book including a plurality of signatures disposed in proper alignment having a plurality of equi-distantly spaced kerfs extending diagonally across the back thereof, cords anchored in said kerfs having the terminals thereof anchored to the sides of the book section formed bysaid signatures in parallel relation to the rear edges thereof and end sections disposed over said cord terminals including an inner sheet and an outer folded sheet and a binding cloth secured about the folded edge of the folded sheet and secured to the outer face of the single sheet at the rear edgethereof.
