To all whom it mm] Be it known that I', EDWARD FALTUS, citizen of Czechoslovakia,--residin at New York city, in the county of New ork and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Press Ink Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to printing presses,.the invention having more particular reference to the inking mechan1sm, ,which supplies the ink to the .form rollers and the form.
The invention has foran object to provide a novel and efficient means for causing the ink tobe distributed in the. desired quantities, to difierent parts along said type cylinders.- The invention is applied in connection with the inking roll which is com monly known as the fountain roll.
For further comprehension of the inven-- tion and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to-thefollowing description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which 1 the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 4 is a, fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2 and illustrating the gauge element for use in setting the bar which carries the inking fountains and distributing plates, parallel with the fountain roll.
Referring now to the drawing, the refer-- ence numeral 10 indicates aninking roll of a printing press, this roll being of ordinary construction, and being commonly known as the fountain roll, and being supported and rotated in the usual manner. Extending adjacent and parallel to thisroll is a support for the ink fountains, and; for the devices which cause the ink to be distributed, in films of varying thickness, throughout the length of the said roll. I make this support of a lower elongated plate or fiat bar 12,
and a top member 13 which extends along the bottom plate and is broadly speaking of the shape of a right-angled trian le in cross section, with its'vertical wall flush with side the said of the plate 12 which is removed from the roll 10. This top member 13 may be fixed to the plate 12 by means of screws 14 passing through projecting lugs 13 on the end of said top member, which latter is slightly shorter than the bottom plate 12. Supported by this member 13, in the recess formed between the inclined side thereof and the roll 10, are the inking fountains 16 which are carriedby the bars 17 which are attached to dovetail guide blocks such as 18 adjustablealong a complementary groove in the top of the member 13 and adapted to befixed in position by the screws 19.
The ink from the fountains falls upon .a series of sectional ink knife members 22 which extend individually transversely to plate 12 and partly in the upper member 13. These blocks 24 are formed with threaded sockets 26 in which engage the inner ends of screws .27 whose axes the top of the plate 12 and whichrare aclie in theplane of commodated in borings formed partly in plate and partly in the member 13,
shouldered elements 28, on these screws preventing longitudinal movement thereof.
These screws have heads 29 thereonjwhereby they may be rotated to adjust the members 22 toward or away from the roll 10.
The plate 12 may be secured to the usual support 32 by means of screws 33 passing through transverse slots 34 in the end of the plate and threaded into the. said support. In order to ensure of the plate 12 being set at all times parallel to the roll 10 I have provided the following gauge device, which is illustrated in detail in Fig. 4. A screw 36 is threaded through the end wall ofeach slot 34 and is adapted to have its inner end engage the screw 33 to determine the position of the plate 12 with res ect to said screw. Freely surrounding this screw 36, and held against longitudinal movement thereon, is a worm pinion 37 which has a feather connection with the screw as indicated at 38, and which meshes with a worm gear 39 fixed on the lower end of a vertical accommodated in a recess 41 in the said plate.
' dle 40 has fixed thereon a pointer 42 which is adapted to register with a numbered dial 43 on the main plate 12 so that the position of each screw can be seen by reference to this dial, it being apparent that the pointer 42 is caused to move when the screw is turned.
As willbe apparent from the above description I have provided a simple means whereby the ink can be distributed in the desired manner on the roll,the members 22 being adjusted individually toward or away from the said 'roll according as the adjacent portion of the latter is to receive a thin or a thick film or coat of ink.
"While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown, and that various changes and modifications might bemade therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows L'In a printin press, in vcombination with a fountain I'd ll, an ink supply device, a supporting frame, a series of sectional inkknife devices extending transversely to said roll, a series of blocks slidable in said frame and having said devices connected thereto, said blocks being formed with threaded sockets, and screws swiveled in said frame and'engaged in the said sockets, said frame comprising a bottom plate and a top member resting thereon, the said screws having their axes in the meeting plane of said plate and top member.
2. In a printing press, in combination with a fountain roll, an ink supply device, a supporting frame, a series of sectional knife-like inking members extending transversely to said roll, a series of blocks slidable in said frame and having said members hinged thereto, and means for adjusting said blocks toward and away from the said roll.
'3. In a printing press, a fountain roll, a device for supplying ink to said roll, a support for said device, clamping screws passing through transverse slots in the said device and threaded into the said support to clamp said device to said support, and gauge screws threaded through said device transversely to said clamping screws and adapted to be engaged by said clamping screws to indicate the longitudinal ositioning of the latter relatively to the said slots.
4:. In a printing press, a fountain roll, a device for supplying ink to said roll, a sup-. port for said device, clamping screws passing through transverse slots in the said de vice and threaded into the said support to clamp said device to said support, and gauge screws threaded through said device transversely to said clamping screws and adapted to be engaged by said clamping screws to indicate the longitudinal positioning of the latter relatively to the said slots, worm pinions threaded on said screws, worm gears engaged by said pinions, and pointers connected to said worm gear to rotate therewith.
