Description

Patented Feb. 23, 1926 UNITED STATES BEN J. FELDSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BABY BATTLE.
Applicationfiled May 29, 1925. Serial No. 33,689.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BEN J. FELDSTEIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New York city, New York, have invented new and useful'lmprovements in Baby Battles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and especially to such devices as are commonly called baby or nursery rattles.
The object of the invention is to provide a rattle of this character with a head portion resembling that of a small child or animal having transparent eye chambers enclosing loosely disposed shot adapted to represent pupils capable of being rolled about and to assume different positions, making the same very amusing and attractive.
The invention is illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the rattle; Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the rattle taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes a holder comprising a stem, lower ring 11 and cap 12 rigidly attached to the upper end of tle are preferably made of celluloid or some other suitable, durable and sanitary material.
Secured to the cap 12 is a hollow sounding head 13 comprising two sections 14 and 15, the former conforming to the back of a small childs head, while the latter section 15 constitutes the 'face portion, the features of which are molded and stand out in relief. The portions of the face corresponding to the ositions of the eyes, are depressed round soc ets 16, each thereof having a marginal annular groove 17 and center depression 18. Disposed over each socket 16 is a cup shaped transparent globe 19, the open edge of which is seated in and permanently fixed in the socket, while the closed globular portion stands outwardly of the rest of the features of the face. I Each globe 19 virtually comprises a transparent chamber in which a shot or head 20 is loosely disposed, the shot being adapted to assume any position in the groove 17 or be moved across the stem. These and other parts of the rat-- equivalent, for making a rattling noise when the device is shaken in the usual manner.
In order to cause the eyes to assume different positions in their respective sockets, it is merely necessary to shake the rattle while holding it either in a vertical or horizontal position. The shot 20 will then travel in circular paths over the grooves 17 or across the bottom walls of the sockets and rest in the center depression 18.
What I claim is:-
1. 'The herein described rattle, comprisin a holder, a hollow sounding head secure thereto, means loosely disposed in said head to cause a rattling noise when the rattle is shaken, one face of the head having human features provided with eye sockets, transparent globular members for said sockets adapted to form an eye chamber, and balls loosely arranged in said chambers to give the appearance of pupils.
2. The herein described rattle, comprising a holder, a' hollow sounding head secured thereto, means loosely disposed in said head to cause a rattling noise, said head comprising a section having human features in relief, the eye sockets having the bottomwalls provided with annular grooves and center depressions, a transparent globe for each socket comprising a cup shaped member having its open edge permanently attached 'to the head, and a shot for the interior of each globe.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a casing made of sheet material, eyes formed by depressions in the surface thereof, said depressions being of circular shape, a pair of hollow, transparent substantially hemispherical members afiixed to the edges of said depressions to form two complete eye sockets and each socket having a small sphere therein representing an eyeball or pupil and capable of motion within the eye socket and free to make a rattling noise when agitated.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature. I
BEN. J. FELDSTEIN.
