DUPLICATING ROLL OR SHEET AND PROCESS OF MAKING SAME.

Be it known that I, ALBERT IsAAcs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Queens, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Rolls or Sheets and Processes of Making Same, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to duplicating rolls or sheets for duplicating machines and to the processes by which the same are made, and more particularly to an improved form of roll or sheetand to the processes by which the same is made and by which the duplicating medium forming a part of the said roll is quickly, easily and securely attached to the foundation or backing of the roll.

Inthe manufacture of duplicating rolls or sheets, one of the difficulties which is encountered is that of causing the duplicating material, which is usually a hot gelatinous cgmposition, to adhere to the backing or foundation of the roll or sheet. This backing or foundation may be paper or may be a .woven fabric, sometimes coated on one side, as oilcloth or the like. The gelatinous composition is applied to the base or foundation by pouring the same on in a liquid heated state, with or without the interposition of some suitable substance which may be waterproof, glycerine-proof, or the like, asis desired by the manufacturer to meet particular conditions.

For various reasons, the gelatinous composition does not always adhere to the base or foundation when it is poured directly thereon, nor has there yet been found any entirely satisfactory material with which the foundation may be coated for the purpose of giving greater adherence to the duplicating composition. The substances used for this purpose have been in the nature of drying oils or paints or the like, which, after hardening by the oxidizing action of the air, are not appreciably softened by heat or other means. I have found that by interposing between the'backing and the gelatinous composition a material which is liquefied or softened by a less degree of heat than that which is required to reduce to a suitable pouring condition the gelatinous composition, and then pouring the liquid heated gelatinous composition thereupon and allowing both to cool and harden together, an entirely satisfactory adhesion and union of the three elements ofthe roll or sheet, namely, the backing, the adhesive substance, and the gelatinous composition, is produced.

In carrying my invention into effect in the particular embodiment thereof which I here describe, I provide a sheet of backing or foundation material, which niay be of any suitable material and of any desired length, and I coat one side of the same with some suitable material in' the meltin point of'which is in the neighborhood 0 one hundred to one hundred and ten degrees Fahrenheit. I have found in practice that a suitable rubber cement, or the material which is known in the trade as balatan, is satisfactory for this purpose. The same may be applied in any suitable manner as will be well understood by those skilled in the art.

After this layer of adhesive material has become solidified I pour thereon the hot liquid gelatinous composition. This composition usually has a melting point of about one hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit, consequently, when it is poured upon the previously applied adhesive coating, the heat of the gelatine partially melts or ,li'quefics the adhesive coatingbefore the gelatine has had time to cool, thus producing a perfect union and adhesion of the two materials. 1. A duplicating roll or sheet adapted for use upon duplicating machines or the like, comprising in combination a backingsheet, a layer of material thereon having a comparatively low melting point, and a layer of material on said first named layer having a comparatively high melting point.

2. A duplicating roll or sheet adapted for use upon duplicating machines or the like, comprising in combination a backing sheet, a layer of gelatinous material having a melting point of about one hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit, and a layer of material between said backing sheet and said gelatinous material, having a melting point substantially 'lower than the melting point of said gelatinous material.

3. A duplicating roll or sheet adapted for use upon duplicating machines or the like, comprising in combination a backing sheet, a layer of material as rubber cement applied thereto, and a layer of gelatinous composition applied to said layer of rubber I cement. Y

The process of producing a duplicating roll or sheet adapted for use upon duplicating machines or the like which consists in applying to a suitable backing sheet a layer of material having a comparatively low melting point, and ap lying to said first named layer a layer 0? material having a comparatively high melting point.

5. The process of producing a duplicatroll or sheet adapted for use upon duplicating machines or the like which consists in applying to a suitable backing sheet a layer of material as rubber cement, and a plying to said rubber cement a layer 0 hot liquid gelatinous composition.
