UNITED STATES 4 1,573,579 PATENT ,OFFICE.

LID FASTENER FOR B OXES.
Application filed April 13, 1925. Serial No. 22,741.
make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of application.
This invention relates to boxes and particularly to a lid securing means. The main object of the invention is to provide means for expeditiously attaching a box cover to the box and for as easily removing it. Certain types of boxes, such as egg crates, and the like, may be used repeatedly, so it is not desirable to nail the cover to the box because withdrawing the nails soon destroys the cover.
My invention contemplates a novel form of clip or fastening device which may be manipulated tosecurely hold the box lid to the box and which will enable the lid to be taken ofl without the interposition of keys, tools or the like. The novelty of the invention will be clearly understood by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a box constructedv in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a like View with the lid swung to open position, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view through one end of the box and through the lid.
The box is formed with a bottom 1, ends 2 and 3, sides 4 and 5 and a central partition 6. The box is merely illustrative of one embodiment of my invention, since the box thus far described is old, as is also the cover board 7 which closes it. In order to I secure the removable cover board to the box in a detachable manner I provide two clips, one at each end of the board. Each clip consists of a sheet of metal bent back intermediate its ends to form a tube 8, the meeting edges of the tube being integral with two upstanding webs 9 and 10, close together and terminating in two spaced bore of the tube.
right-angular flanges 11 and 12 which con stitute jaws to engage theends ofthe lid 7. The jaws may be fastened to the lid by clincher nails 1301 other similar devices. Between the ends of the tube 8 aretwo transverse slots 14 and 15 adapted to receive the staples 16 and 17 whose eyes align with the There are two staples at each end of the box (although there may be more if desired), and there isa clip at each edge of the cover 7. The clip and staples may be secured together by a rod 18,
one at each end of the box, each rod being curved so that it will have sufficient spring between its ends to cause it to bind against the bore of the tube or barrel 8, so that it will hold in place by friction. A strong enough longitudinal pull will cause the rod 18 to become dislodged so that the cover can be taken off, as will be clearly apparent by reference to Figure 2. When it is desired to fasten the lid to thebox, the lid may be laid upon the box with the clips overlapplng its ends .so that the staples 16 and 17 will be received in the notches 14 and 15. Then the bent rod 18 will be pushed through the tube and through the staples, acting as a pintle or securing device to hold the lid securely fastened to the box.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let tors-Patent is:
1. In combination, a box, a cover therefor, and means for securing the cover to the box, comprising clips at the ends of the cover, having tubes extending cross-wise of the box provided with notches, staples carried by the ends of the box, received in the notches, and curved rods extending through the tubes and through the staples to frictionally engage the inner walls of the tubes and to fasten the tubes to the staples.
2. In combination, a box, a cover therefor. and means for fastening the cover to the box, said means comprising a tubular memacross the end .of the box, and having notches, staples carried by the box engaging the notches, and a rod frictionally engaging the inner wallof a tubular member, and passing into the staples. a
3. In combination, a box, a cover therefor, and means for fastening the cover to the box, said means comprising a tubular member at the end of the box cover extending across the end of'the box, and having notches, staples carried by the box engaging the notches, and a rod frietionally engaging the inner Wall of a tubular member, and passing into the staples, said rocl being curved" sheet of metal bent intermediate its ends to form a tube, the edges of the tube terminating in outstanding Webs close together, the
ends of the sheet being at right angles to ill) the Webs and spaced; apart to provide cover engaging jaws, the tube having notches to receive complementary fastening devices, ans. a curved rod projeetable through the tu e.
In testimony va hereozl I efix my signeture.
