Description
R. R. HAGE DOOR HOLDER Feb. 9 1926.
Filed August 24, 1923 Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES ROBERT R. HAGE, F MINNEAPOLIS,MINNESOTA.
DOOR HOLDER.
Application filed August 24, 1923. Serial No. 659,109.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. HAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and highly eflicient door holder for swinging doors and the like, and to this end it consists of the novel de vices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings: a
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the improved door holder appliedto a door frame and a door hinged thereto for horizontal swinging movements, some parts being shown in section by means of broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view principally in section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
The numeral 4: indicates a door frame 1 havnig hinged thereto at 5 a horizontal swinging door 6 which may be for a garage or other building.
The improved door holder comprises a l'ioriaontal double toggle made up of end links 7 and 8 and an intermediate link 9. Said end links 7 and 8 each comprise a single fiat bar, and the intermediate link 9 comprises two laterally spaced flat bars. between which the inner ends of said end links project and to which they are pivoted to permit buckling and straightening movements of the toggle in a vertical plane. A screw eye 10 anchors the outer end of the end link 7 to the top member of the door frame 4 with freedom to permit horizontal lateral swinging and vertical buckling and straightening movements of the toggle. The outer end 01 the end link 8 is hinged at 11 to'a bracket 12 for horizontal swinging movement This bracket 12 is secured to the inner face of the door 6, at the top thereof,
and arranged to hold the respective end of r the toggle inwardly ofi'set from a line extending between the hinges 5 and screw eye 10 when the door is closed and outwardly otlset from said line when the door is open.
The toggle is arranged to be buckled by a downward movement and is stopped during its straightening movement by a transverse pin 13 secured to the downwardly offset inner end 14 of the end link 7 and arranged to engage the lower edges of the bars comprising the intermediate link 9, as best shown in Fig. 2. This pin 13 is arranged to hold the links 7 and 8 with their pivotal connection slightly beyond a dead center and thereby lock the toggle against buckling 7 movement. In the accompanying drawings, which A coiled spring 15 has one of its ends anchored at 16 to :1 depending lug on the link 8 close to its hinge 11,'and its other end is attached to the offset end of the link 8 at a point below the stop pin 13 and is under strain, when the door is open, to hold the links, '7 and 9 with their pivotal connection beyond a dead center.
To 'vary the operative length of the toggle and thereby hold the door 6 in different open positions, the link '7 is made. longitudinally adjustable by transversely separating the same and overlapping the inner ends thereoi' for sliding movement, the one upon the other, and securing said over-' lapped ends in different ad ustments by a clamp 11!. To keep the sections of the link shown in 2.
To afford means by which the toggle may be buckled there is attached to the interi mediate link 9 a rope 19, the slack in whlch is normally taken upby a yielding holder or arm 20. One end of this arm is attached to the bracket 12, and the other end thereof is provided with an eye through which the rope is free to slide. I
As previously stated, the fact that the connection between the links 7 and 9 is beyond a dead center securely locks the toggle and holds the door in an open position. By longitudinally adjusting the links 7, the door may beheld in various open positions. To buckle the toggle and thereby close the door 6, it is only necessary to pull downward on the free end of the rope 19, and at which time the arm 20 will yield and perspring will tend to buckle the spring and closethe door. I p
,The above described door holder, in addition to its use for holding garage and other doorsyits especially well adapted for holding the doors of covered delivery wagons V and the like;
l'VhatI claim is: i
1. A swinging door holder comprising a toggle having inner and "outer end links, an intermediate link, an offset bracket, said inner end link having means for attaching the same tov a door Irame, to which a swinging door is.liingecl,for compound swinging movement both in the direction of the swing ing movement of said door and at right angles to such movement, said bracket having means for attaching the same to said door, the outer end link being hinged to the bracket for swingingmovement in the directionoi the swingingmovement of said door, said intermediate link being pivoted to the end'links for movementat right angles to the swinging movement of the door, anda stop arranged during the straightening movement of the toggle to position the pivotal. connection between the inner end link and the intermediate link beyond a dead center, 7 J H 7 2; The structure defined in claim 1 in further'c'ombination with a'spring operative on the. toggle when the door is fully open to hold the togglebeyond a dead center.
