which the following is a full, clear, concise,

the provision of a pump for delivering lubricant, or other similar materials, under either high or low pressure.
The objects of my invention are: First: To provide a pumpof the character described, comprising a receptacle for holdingj-thelubricant or other fluid to be delivered, a cover for the open end of thereceptacle,- low and high pressure cylinders mounted upon the' cover and removable therewith, pistons, in said cylinders, and common means for actuating bothof said pistons. 4
. Second: To provide a pump of the character described, in which the low pressure cylinder may be used either for priming the high pressure cylinder, or for deliverin lubrlcant under low pressure.

Referringto the drawings, my improved pump comprises a receptacle 10, having the bottom wall 11, and ahorizontal annular flange 12 at its upper end,.which forms an Figure 5 is -a-'sectional detail taken on opening 13 through which the receptaclev Y can be filled, and the lubricant withdrawn therefrom. Latches 14 are pivotally secured to the flange 12 by means, of the pins 15. These latches may be used for securing a closure in the opening13, while-the recep tacle is in transit to the point of use,
, For discharging the lubricant in the receptacle, I provide acover plate 16, which is more or less circular in outline, but which is provided with cam surfaces 17 for 00- v acting with the latches 14' to secure the cover plate 16 to the receptacle lzrojecting inwardly from the cover plate 16 1s a body member L8, having the bore 19 formed therein. This bore'is connected with the upper end of the low pressure cylinder- 20 by the tubular member 21, and union 22.
Slidably mounted in the cylinder 20 is av pintle 27, so that when they are in the po- 1 sition shown in Figure 2 they completely close the opening in the ring 26. These flap valves are provided withco-acting projections 29, which limit the inward movement of the flap valves.
The upper end of the piston rod 24 extends through a suitable bearing 30 in the cover plate,'and is connected by the ring 31 with the lever 32. One end of this lever is bifurcated, and the bifurcations 33 pass around the lug 34 which projects upwardly from one side-of the cover plate, and are pivotally pin 35.

A second 'bore 40 is formed in the body is preferably provided with a lining 41 of brass, .or other suitable material, forming a high pressure cylinder in' which the plunger 42 of small diameter reciprocates. The inner end of this piston is preferably provided with a leather gasket 43, which is held in place by means of the'screw 44, and which effectually prevents the escape of lubricant along the plunger 42. A bore 45 extending transversely of the body member 18 establishes communication between the bore 19, the high pressure cylinder, and the discharge conduit '46 of the high pressure. cylinder, which extend upwardly through the body member, the cover plate and the boss 47 projecting from the cover plate. A flexible conduit'48 secured to the boss 47 provides means for delivering the lubricant discharged from a high pressure cylinder to any desired point.
The diameter of the inner end ofthe bore 45 is reduced to provide a valve seat 50 for the check valve 51, which is yieldingly held on its seat by the spring 52. The outer end of the spring 52 abuts against the ring 53, which is )secured in the bore 45. A plug 54 closes the outer end of the bore 45.
Formed integrally with the body member 18 is a valve body.55, having the bore 56 formed therein, this bore being substantially parallel with the bores 19 .and 40. longitudinally spaced openings 57 and 58 "extend through the Wall between the bore 19 and the bore 56. A tubular valve 60 is rotatably mounted in the bore 56 and is retained in place by means of the clip 61, which is secured to the top of the cover plate by the screw 62 and which projects into an annular recess 63 formed in the outside of the tubular valve 60.. The upper end of the tubular valve is turned at an angle thereto, as shown at 60', to form a handle by means of which the valve can be rotated in its bore. Two openings 64 and 65 are formed in the wall of the tubular valve 60, and are respectively designed to register with the openings 57 and 58, referred to above. A disk 66 is soldered or otherwise secured in the bore of the valve 60 between the two openings 64 and 65, so as to form a partition between the two parts of the valve communicating with these openings. A third opening 67 formed in the lower end. of the tubular valve 60 is designed to register with an opening 68, which provides communication between the tubular valve and the interior of the receptacle 10. I
The outer "end of the plunger 42 is cor.- nected with the lever 32 by means of a link at a point intermediate the link 31, and the fulcrum of the lever. It will, therefore, be apparent that when the lever 32 i is Two oscillated the piston in the low pressure cylinder and the plunger in the high pressure' cylinder will be reciprocated in their respective'cylinders. On the upward stroke of the piston in the low. pressure cylinder, the grease from the receptacle 10 will be drawn into the lower end of the low pressure cylinder, and upon the next downward stroke of the low pressure piston the flap valve 28 will open, and permit the lubricant to pass through these valves and the openings in the spider 23 into the upper portion of the cylinder. The grease which my pump is adapted to handle has sufficient viscosity to prevent it from being forced out of the cylinder 20 upon the downward movement of the plunger in the cylinder. Upon the next upward stroke, the lubricant just transferred to the top of the piston in the low pressure cylinder will be moved upwardly,
and an additional quantity of lubricant drawn intothe lower end of the cylinder. As this operation is repeated, the upper end of the cylinder 20, the union 22, the tubular member 21, and. the bore 19' will become filled with lubricant, and then upon the next upward/ stroke of the piston this lubricant will be placed under pressure, thereby opening the valve 51 and filling the bores 45 and 46 and the high pressure cylinder. Upon the next downward stroke 'of the lever 32, the plunger 42 will dis-- charge the lubricant from the highpressure cylinder, and out through the bores45 and 46 into and through the flexible conduit 48, it being understood that the checl; valve 51 will close upon its seat, thus preventing the return of the lubricant to the low pressure cylinder.
Each upward stroke of the low pressure piston will displace more lubricant than canv be;- discharged by the downward stroke of the plunger 42. If the valve 60 is turned to the position shownin Figures 1 and 3, a path will be provided for the escape of the surplus lubricant, or grease, from the low pressure cylinder through the openings 58 and 65, the bore of the valve 60, and the openings 67 and 68 back into the receptacle.
The diameter of these openings is made small enough so that the resistance to the flow of lubricant thereto 'will be suflicient to build up enough back pressure in the lubricant in the low pressure cylinder to open the check valve 51', so as to insure proper priming of the high pressure cylinder.
When the valve 60 is turned to the position shown in Figure4, the upper end of the bore 19 is then in fcommunication,
through the openings 57 and 64, with the ducted by a suitable flexible conduit 71 tothe point where it is to be'used.
From the above description, it will be "clear that the valve 60 controls or deterthe low pressure cylinder will discharge. It 10 will also hey-clear that the cover plate 16 can be easily and quickly removed along with all ofthe pumping apparatus, and
positioned in another receptacle as fast as the receptacles are emptied.
While I have described the details of construction of the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be clearly understood that my inventionv is not limited to these details, but is capable of)other, adaptations and modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1i Thejcombination with a receptacle hav-' ing a horizontal flange at one end forming an opening .for said receptacle and a plurality Of'C 'tches pivotally mounted on said flange, of it ,cover for said receptacle having cam' surfaces for co-acting. with said catches to secure said cover oversaid opening, a tube supported by said cover and extending downwardly therefrom, said tube ending in a low pressure cylinder, the lower end of which opens adjacent the bottom of said receptacle, a piston in said cylinder having an upwardly opening valve, a high pressure cylinder carried by said cover and communicating with said low pressure cylinder, said high pressure cylinder having an outlet, a valve body having a'bo1 'e communicating with said low pressure cylinder and saidreceptacle, a tubular valve rotatably mounted in'said bore and extending out- -wardly through said cover, said valve when in one position forming an outlet for said low pressure cylinder and when turned to another position forming a relief passageway from said low pressure cylinder to said receptacle, and means carried by said cover whereby said pistons can be actuated.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a horizontal flange at one end forming an opening for said receptacle and a plurality-of catches pivotally mounted on said flange, of a cover for said receptacle having cam surfaces force-acting with said catches to secure said cover' over said opening, a tube supported by said cover and extending downwardly therefrom, said tube ending in a low pressure cylinder, the lower end of which opens adjacent the bottom of said receptacle, a piston'in said cylinder having an upwardly opening valve, a high pressure cylinder carried by said cover and communicating with said low pressure cylinder, said high pressure cylinder havingan outlet, and means carried by said cover whereby said pistons can be actuated.

The combination with a receptacle, of i a cover therefor, a low pressure cylinder carried bysa-id cover and opening adjacent the bottom of said receptacle, a high pressure cylinder carried by said cover and communicating with said cylinder, and common means for controlling the discharge from said cylinders.
7. The combination with a supporting plate,-of a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder mounted thereon, said high pressure cylinder communicating .with said low pressure cylinder, each of said cylinders having a discharge passageway, a valve body carried by sa d plate. and having a bore communicating with said low pressure cylinder, and a valve' rotatably mounted in said bore, said valve comprising means for determining'whether said high pressure or said low pressure cylinder is to discharge through its discharge passageway.
8. A lubricating pump comprising a low pressure cylinder, a high pressure cylinder,
and common means for separately controlling the discharge from said cylinders.
9;A lubricant pump comprising a low pressure cylinder, a high pressure cylinder,
a low pressure piston in said low pressure cylinder, a high pressure piston in said high a cover therefor, a-low pressure cylinder carpressure :cylinder, an actuating element, operative connections between said element and said pistons for moving them alternately through the discharge'portion of their flllOVO -ment,hIgh pressure and low pressure discharge conduits, and a valve for affording said low -ressure cylinder a restricted prespistons to move thern'alternately through the' discharge portion of their movement, high pressure and low pressure discharge conduits, and a valve for affording sa1d low pressure cylinder a restricted-pressure relief to make it charge said high pressure cylinder, or for connecting it 'direct'to its conduit. v
11. Lubricant dispensing'nieans comprising high pressure and low pressure compressing 'means, a .valve, and connections controlled by said valve for rendering said high pressure means operative and said low pressure means inoperative, or V for rendering said low pressure means operative and said high pressure means substantially inoperative.
12. Lubricant dispensing mcans'colnprising high pressure and low pressure compress ing means, a valve, and means controlled by sa1d valve for connecting said low pressure means to charge said high pressure means, 'or to discharge direct and thereby render said high pressure means relatively inoperative.
