TYPE-LINE SETTIIEG AND CASTING MACHINE.
Application filed February 7, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARD UHTHOFF, a citizen of Germany, residing at Berlin- Charlottenburg, in the State of Prussia,
Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Line Setting and Casting Machines: and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In type line setting and casting machines with matrices guided on wires, the set line before being cast, is justified between two closing cheeks or jaws, the front one of which is fixed, whilst the rear one is turned out of the plane of the line after the casting has been made, by means of an oscillatable spindle, and thus the matrices can be distributed again. If however the matrices are intended to move in a cycle, it is necessary to be able to move also the front line-closing cheek out of the plane of the line before the line elements are distributed. This invention relates to such a device and consists substantially in the front line-closing cheek being coupled to the oscillatable spindle which moves the rear line-closing cheek. in such a manner that when the said spindle is swung outwardly through half an oscillation, the front cheek is carried by it and is then uncoupled from it, so that it can be automatically returned to the work- 36 ing position.
A construction according to the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the two lineclosing cheeks, and
Figure 2 is a section onan enlarged scale of the front line-closing cheek.
In the frame a of the machine a spindle 7) is rotatably mounted in the usual manner carrying a rear line-closing cheek c. A front line-closing cheek d is secured to a swinging arm e. In the latter is mounted a spring h which presses a key g guided in the arm 6, into a key groove f in the spindle b. At the front side of the key 9 a groove 6 is provided with which can engage a stop 70 secured by screws to the frame of the machine.
A spring ltends to keep the swinging arm 0 always in the vertical position.

The working is as follows Figure 1 shows the spindle b with the closing cheeks c and d in the position they occupy when the matrices are ready for easting. When the casting is finished, the spindle b and the two closing cheeks d, c are turned to the left to the extent of about 60 (see dotted lines in Figure 2). Towards the end of this movement, the resilient stop it, engages with the groove 6 in the key 9 and during the further rotation of the spindle b, forces the key 9 in opposition to the pressure of the spring h, out of the groove f of the spindle b, whereupon the spring Z returns the arm 6 to the working position. The time occupied by the turning of the spindle b to the left, is sufficient to allow the matrix line to be moved to the right out of the matrix assembler.
The spindle b with the rear line-closing cheek 0 remains in the position turned 60 degrees to the left (see dotted lines in Figure 2) until a new line is set. Only then it swings back, when the machine is thrown into gear, in order to enable the new line to be justified, and the key 9 is again forced into the groove f. This groove must be made of such a length that the closing cheek can be moved in the longitudinal direction of the spindle b to suit the desired length of line.
Having now particularly described and. ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a type line setting and casting machine of the type including matrices guided on wires, an assembler, a front line-closing cheek a rear line-closing cheek, a spindle carrying the latter, means for coupling and disconnecting the front line-closing cheek with the spindle and from the latter and means for automatically returning the front line-closing cheek to the working position.
2. In a type line setting and casting ma-v chine of the type including matrices guided on wires, an assembler, a front line-closing cheek, a rear line-closing cheek, a spindle carrying the latter, means for coupling the front line-closing cheek with the spindle, a stop for disconnecting the latter parts after the cast line has left the setting place, and means for automatically returning the front line-closing cheek to the working position.
