Description

Jan. 19,1926. 1,570,013 N. W. SMITH FOUNTAIN COMB Filed March 31. 1923 .mmgunm Patented Jan. 19, 1926.
UNITED STATES NEWMAN W. SMITH, OF MAY, ILLINOIS.
FOUNTAIN COMB.
Application filed March 31, 1923.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that NEWMAN W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at May, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fountain combs and its principal object is to provide a comb of this character adapted to apply hair tonic or other liquid to the hair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fountain comb embodying a reservoir for retaining the hair tonic or other liquid and a piston for applying pressure to the liquid to force the same through the tines of the comb to the hair.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a comb of this character which may be readily assembled or disassembled and cleaned and may be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions, and arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a fountain comb constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the tines of the comb.
Referring to the drawings wherein corresponding characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a cylinder in one end of which a nozzle 6 is threaded the latter being formed with a solid member 7 having a valve receiving opening 8 and a passageway 9 communicating with the cylinder. Formed on one side of the cylinder 5 is a barrel of relatively small diameter and indicated at 10, the cylinder 5 being provided with an opening 11 in which a valve 12 extends and is threaded in the opening 8 and is adapted to control communication between the nozzle 6 and the interior of the cylinder 5. Plugs 13 are threaded in the ends of the barrel 10 whereby the latter may be drainedor cleansed. A plurality of re- Serial No. 629,116.
movable tines indicated at 14 are screwed into the barrel 10 and each is provided with a duct or opening 15 communicating with the barrel 10. A valve 16 is provided and extends to the barrel 10 and is adapted to control a passage or port 17 in the cylinder 5 to control communication between the cylinder and thebarrel 10.
A piston designated at 17 is reciprocable in the cylinder 5 and includes a handle 18 having a finger engaging opening 19 at its outer end.
When it is desired to fill the cylinder 5 with hair tonic or other liquid the valve 12 is first opened to permit communication between the nozzle 6 and the cylinder 5. The piston 17 is then moved towards the rear end of the cylinder to create a vacuum therein and thus draw in a quantity of hair tonic or the like through the nozzle 6. After the cylinder has been filled the valve is then rotated to closed position and the valve 16 opened to establish communication between the barrel 10 and cylinder 5. The operator then reciprocates the piston 17 slowly to expel the liquid through the tines 14, thus applying the same to the operators scalp.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the means best adapted to per form the functions set forth, various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A. fountain comb comprising a barrel for containing liquid, having a nozzle threaded into one end, said nozzle having a threaded opening adapted to receive a valve, a piston slidably mounted in said barrel, a smaller NEWMAN W. SMITH.
