ROBERT P. BR, 013 SCIEIENECTADY, NEW YORK.
PICTURE AND OBJECT TARGET.
Application filed January 22, i925. Serial No. 4,114.
To all whom 2'75 may concern Be it known that I, ROBER'J P. ORR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Picture and Object Target, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to targets for use object to provide an improved picture and object wherein figures are presented at different places on the target which act in a certain sense as bulls eyes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a target for archery wherein a plurality of swinging pictures or objects are provided and positioned so that they will swing out of the way when struck by an arrow.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is an elevation of a target, disclosing one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 25 but showing a modified construction wherein the pictures are pivotally mounted or hinged to the base.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view through Figure 2, approximately on line 3--3.
Figure at. is a view similar to the lower part of Figure 3 but disclosing a further modified form of the invention.
In the practice of archery, different kinds of targets have been provided which usually are formed with circles or other means for designating the different values of the shot. However, in the targets just mentioned, the arrow is partially embedded when the target is hit and later the value of the shot must be ascertained by the distance the same is from the center of the target. In the present invention, means have been provided which more nearly resemble living targets and which will give a reality to the practice of shooting arrows not present in the targets heretofore provided.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 is a target disclosing one embodiment of the invention. The target 1 is provided with a body 2 having a plurality of pictures 3 painted thereon or mounted thereon in any desired manner, as for instance, by being in the practice of archery and has for an formed on paper and pasted in position. If desired, the body 2 could be made of canvas or other cloth while the pictures 3 could be paper or other desired material. On each of the pictures 3 there is provided the outline of an animal and when the arrow hits the target, the value of the shot is determined by the nearness of the arrow to a vital spot on the animal or each animal hit be given a certain count or value.
In Figures 2 and 3, another form of the invention is shown wherein the target 1 is provided with a body 2 having a number of apertures 24 normally filled by pietures 5 which are mounted to swing as indicated in Figure 3. The various pictures 5 may be swingably mounted by a hinge structure 6 formed of paper or cloth pasted onto the body 2' and onto the picture 5. If desired, rings or other forms of hinge mem bers 7 could be used as shown in the lower part of Figures 2 and 3.
When an arrow hits any of the pictures 5 in this form of the invention, the picture will swing out of the way and let the arrow freely pass through the target without injuring the target and without appreciably injuring the picture though a mark may be made thereon whereby the value of the shot may be ascertained. The various pictures 5 may be made of metal, wood, paper or other material and the outlines thereon will be fitted or otherwise applied thereto.
In order to make the target even more realistic than the pictures shown in Figure 2, actual figures 8 could be provided as shown in Figure 4:, said figures being mounted on the body 2 in place of the pictures 3 when usedwith the form of the invention illustrated in Figure 1t If desired, the actual figures 8 of the animals could be secured by adhesive or otherwise to the picture members 5 and, consequently,
could swing out of the way when struck by i an arrow. It will be thus seen that in all forms of the invention figures either in picture form or in actual structure are pre sented so as to simulate as near as possible actual conditions where live animals are being hunted.
What I claim is:
An archers target comprising a body formed with openings therein, members vided with :1 picture 01 an animal Him-( oin said pictures being; adapted to be murlml by an arrow when Hil'llCli. while the mem- 10 hers: by their swinging movement reru'iil the arrow to pus? ilirougrh the aperture.
