E. M. 'LEEDY RADIO TOY Filed April 16, 1924 v Q l. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIH INVENTOR (sown/2m Patented Jan. 12, 1926.
UNITED STATES ESTELLE Moss LEEDY, or BRONX, NEW YORK.
RADIO TOY.
Application filed April 16,1924. Serial No. 706,828.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ESTELLE M. LEEDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bronx, county of the Bronx, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radio Toys, of
which the following is a specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a toy in the nature of a radio receiving set having the general appearance and operating after the manner of a radio set so as to interest and entertain the child with the effects produced and also be of instructive value as training the child for operating a real radio set. j
Other objects are to provide the toy in an attractive but relatively inexpensive form and adapted to serve as a bank in addition to the functions as a toy radio set.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a practical embodiment of the invention, wherein these objects are attained and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the set and Figure 2 is a broken plan view of the same on substantially the plane of line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a broken cross section on substantially the plane of line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a broken detail sectional View taken on substantially the plane of line l4 of Figure 1.
The body of the toy comprises a box or cabinet 5 having a front wall 6 in simulation of the panel of a radio receiving set. This cabinet is shown as having a vertical partition 7 dividing the interior of the same into a large front compartment and a smaller rear compartment 8, the latter serving as a bank or receptacle in which deposits are made through a slot 9 in the top of the cabinet. Access may be had to this compartment for the purpose of removing the deposits by opening up the back 10 of the cabinet which is shown as held at the top by a suitable lock 11 and hinged at the bottom at 12, said construction permitting the back to swing down and expose the entire interior of the bank compartment.
To simulate the effects obtained with a radio set, a musical device is mounted within the front or main compartment and the action of this device is subjected to the operation of special controls on the front of the panel in the nature of the knobs, dials and switches of a radio set.
The musical device illustrated is in the nature of a music box involving a drum 13 carrying pins for engagement with the teeth of the comb 14;. This mechanism may be spring operated as customary in-such devices and is shown as having the winding stem 15 projecting through the case and provided with a knob 16 at the front of the panel.
The starting and stopping of the music box mechanism is effected through another radio control, the music mechanism being shown as having an escapement 17 engaged by a stop 18 carried by the inner end of the spindle of the dial 19.
Variations in the operation of the music mechanism are obtained from an imitation '1.-
Another dial 22 at the front of the panel is shown in Figure 2 as connected with and designed to operate a ratchet click mechanism 23 at the inside of the cabinet.
To further simulate the appearance and effect of a radio set, a loud speaker horn 24 is shown removably seated in a socket 25 journaled in the top of the cabinet and opening downwardly to the music compartment. The hollow spindle of the socket member 25 is shown as carrying a worm gear 26 inside the cabinet, Figure 4, engaged by a worm 27 carried by the spindle of a binding post knob 28 journaled in the front panel.
Also, an imitation loop antenna 29 is shown removably mounted in a socket 30 journaled in the top of the cabinet and having within the cabinet a worm gear 31 engaged by worm 32 on the spindle of another binding post knob 33 journaled in the front panel.
From the foregoing it will be seen that upon turning the radio control knob 16, a music box mechanism will be wound up and that upon turning the dial 19 this mechanism may be started and stopped at will. By turning the selector switch knob 20 the various tunes of the music box mechanism may be selected. The knobs 28 and 33 serve to face the loud speaker and the antenna loop in different directions and the operation of dial 22 effects a clicking in simulation of code signals.
feature gives the child an additional inter est in the toy.
The various effects obtained with the control knobs and dials simulate in a generalv way the results obtained with a regular receiving set and thus are of educational value both from a matter of appearance and from the standpoint of teaching operation.
WTha-t is claimed is:
1. A. radio toy comprising a toy radio cabinet having a front panel in simulation of a radio set, toy radio controls rotatably mounted at said front panel, music box mechanism mounted within the cabinet having a Winding stem connected with one of the rotatable radio controls and stopand start means connected with another of the radio controls at the front of the panel whereby the operation of said music box within the cabinet may be governed by the radio controls at the front of the panel.
2. A radio toy comprising a toy radio cabinet having" a front panel in simulation of a radio set, toy radio controls rotatably mounted at said front panel, music box mechanism mounted within the cabinet having a winding stem connected with One of the rotatable radio controls and stop and start means connected with another of the radio controls at the front of the panel whereby the operation said music box within the cabinet may be governed by the radio controls at the front of the panel, said music box mechanism further including a tune changing device and a toy radio selector at the front of the panel connected with said tune changing device to enable a selection of tunes from the music box mechanism by operation of the radio selector control at the front of the panel.
A radio toy comprising a toy radio cabinet having a front panel in simulation of a rad-lo set, toy radio control-s rotatably mounted at said front panel, music box mechanism mounted Within the cabinet having a winding stem connected with one of the rotatable radio controls and. stop and start means connected with another of the radio controls at the front of the panel whereby the operation of said music box Within the cabinet may be governed by the radio controls at the front of the panel, a toy radio loud speaker horn rotatably mounted on the top of the cabinet open to the music box mechanism within the cabinet and connected with one of the rotatable toy radio controls so that the same may be faced to direct the sound in different direc tions by operation of the radio controls at the front of the panel.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of April, 1924.
ESTELLE MOSS LEEDY.
