Be it known that I, BARTON S. SNOW,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Batavia, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoisting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
, My invention relates, as to certain fea tures thereof, generally to machines involving a member adapted to be moved in opposite directions, with means .for effecting such movements of the member automatically, such as for example, automatically operating hoists, planers and other structures; and asv to the other features thereof to hoists and the like machines.
My objects, generally stated, are to provide for the operation of a member adapted to be moved in opposite directions, in such a manner that a suiiicient interval of time will lapse between the engagement of the driving means therewith for moving it in one direction and the engagement of such means for moving it in the opposite direction; and that such intervals will occur at theY proper time relative to the operation of such member throughout the continued operation of the latter; to provide, more particularly, in connection with the employment of my invention in hoist mechanism, novel, simple, positive and safely operating means for automatically operating the hoist in opposite directions, with the lapsing of the desired intervals of time between the automatic stoppingV of thehoist in its movement in one direction and the automatic starting of the hoist to move it in the opposite direction; to provide means whereby the member referred to may, under the control'of the operator, be caused to make one complete reciprocation and thereupon automatically stop, as for example in the case of a hoist, to cause the hoist to move a load to dumping position and thereafter automatically return to lilling position; to provide a novel, simple and positively operating construction of brakemechanism which shall be conditioned automatically for preventing the drum, on whichl the hoisting cable is moved, from reversely rotating, when being driven in either direction, under the action of the load, in the event of failure of the power for drivingthe drum, or other conditions occurring, which would permit theload to rotate the drum, unless restrained, and
other objects as will be manifest from. the following description. Y f
I have devised my improvements for use morepa'rticularly in connection'with hoisting machines, such for example, as the kind shown in U. S. Letters Patent No. 963,384, granted to R. A. Ogle, July 5th, 1910, and have therefore chosen to illustrate themas embodied in a machine of this general construction, thoufrh without intending to limit the invention thereto.

As a preface to the following description, it Ymay Vbe stated that the hoist as shown, is adapted to be employed for the operation of a pair of buckets (not shown) moving-in opposite directions, or al single bucket, in which latter case the cable at the end thereof in connection with the bucket, carries a counterweight whichV is heavier than the empty bucket on the other end of the cable, the buckets, where. twov are '.em-
ployed, being so disposed with relation to loading and dumping points that one bucket is down in position to be loaded while the other bucket extends in elevated, dumping, position.
The frame 11 of the hoist comprises two side members 12 and 13 spaced apart as represented, and provided at their upper ends with bearings lll and 15 in which two shafts 16 and 17, extending transversely of the machine, are journaled, respectively. rllhe shaft 16 carries, between its ends, a drum 18 about which the cable (not shown) to the opposite ends of which the buckets referred to would be attached, is wound. The drum 18 Vis rotatable on the shaft 16, it being adapted to be clutched to the latter by means of a clutch (not shown) operated through Vthe medium of a lever 16 fulcrumed at iis rear end on the frame of the machine. The drum 18 has rigidly secured thereto a sprocket 19 for a purpose hereinafter described.
The drive shaft, represented at 20, 1s yournaled in bearings 21 at the opposite sides of the frame 11, and carries toward its opposite ends pinions 22 and 23 which are freely rotatable about the shaft 2O and are adapted to be alternately clutched to this shaft by clutches 24: and 25, respectively, operated in a well-known manner through the medium of a horizontally swinging lever 2G fulcrumed between it-s ends, as indicated at 27, on a stationary sleeve 28 surrounding a shaft 29 j ournaled in bearings 30 on the frame 11 at opposite sides thereof and held against longitudinal movement thereon by collars 31 on the shaft The clutches 2l and 25 in the particular construction shown are each formed of two members one of which is splined to the shaft 2O and is movable lengthwise of the latter by operating the lever 26 and the other of which is rotatable on the shaft 29, (the pinions and being rigid on the last-referred-to members of the clutches) and becomes clutched to the shaft 20 through the medium of the said splined clutch members co-operating therewith.
The shaft 17 carries at one end a gear 32 rigidly secured thereto and meshing with the pinion 28 and a pinion il?) iixed on the shaft 29, and at its cpposite end a pinion Bil meshing with a gear fixed on the shaft 16, the shaft 29 also carrying a pinion 3G secured thereto and ineshing with the pinion 22. Thus when the clutch is thrown in, the gears 22, 36, and operate idly and the gear 32 is driven from the pinion 23 direct `for driving the shaft i6 and its drum 18 in one direction, whereas when the clutch 2d is thrown in, the gear 32 is driven through the medium of the gears 22, 36 and 33, thus reversing its direction of movement and that of the shaft 1G and the drum carried thereby.
The hoist, as shown, is provided with means for controlling` the movement of the drum 18 in opposite directions and applying a brake to the drum in the event of the Vbreaking of a part of the machine, or the failure of power, which would allow the drum to run free, these means being automatic and comprising the following described parts: lournaled in bearings 87 on the frame sides, is a shaft 88 carrying a box-cam 39 presenting the surfaces 39 and 391 the latter surrounded by the former. The surface 39a throughout a portion thereof is in the form of a cam 39c and its remaining port-ion 39 is concentric with the shaft 88. `The surface 39b the portion 39a thereof opposite the cam-surface 39e is in the form of a cam and its remaining portion 259 is concentric with the shaft 38. Stradthe shaft 38 at a yoke-portion 4l() to tle rear end of which terminates in a yoke pivoted at its arms ell to the bell crank 2G, at die, the yoke d() being provided with a pin 40u carrying a roller 40h which eX- tends into the endless groove bounded by the aafaces 39a and 39 and is adapted Vto cooperate with these surfaces, the diameter of the roller -l-Ob being less than the width of this groove, as shown, and the arrangement being such that in the rotation of the cam 39 in opposite directions the roller 4:01 is engaged, in succession, by the cams 39c and 39", causing, in the rocking of the shaft 38 in one direction, when one of the clutches is in, t-he movement of the clutch mechanism to neutral position, and in the rocking of this shaft in the opposite direction when the other of the clutches is in. the movement of the clutch mechanism to neutral position. Rotatably mounted on the shaft 38 is a yoke-shaped frame d4, opposite sides of which contain longitudinally eX- teuding slots (not shown) and corresponding with the slots in the corresponding yoke .member of said patent, tl ese slots serving as guides for the ends i5 of a pawl device -i having screw-threaded connection with the threaded portion t7 of the shaft 38 within the confines of the frame 4.4:. The frame let is rigid with a sprocket wheel 4-8 connected by a chain 49 with the sprocket wheel 19 on the drum 18 whereby in the rotation of this drum the yoke -i/J and the pawl devi-ce 4G are rotated and the latter is carried along the shaft 38 by reason of its threaded connection therewith. in one direction or the other in Fig. 2 depending on the direction in which the drum 18 isrotated. The pawl device L16 is formed on its opposite faces with oppositely disposed shoulders 50 and 51 which are adapted to altern tely engage with shoulder-s and 53, spectively, formed on dogs 54 and 55 rigidly secured to the shaft 38, but adjustbe crosswise movable thereon, is a rod all,
able lengthwise thereon by clamping means indicated at 56 and 57, respectively, whereby engagement of the shoulders 50 and 51 with their respective cooperating shoulders 52 and 53 operate to rock the shaft 38 for moving the drive-shaft-clutch mechanism, and comprising the- clutches 24 and 25, to a normal, inoperative, neutral position for interruptingl the drive of the machine as is hereinaftermore fully explained.
' The braking mechanism referred to for the drum comprises a pair of brake-shoes 58-59 located at opposite sides of the shaft 16 and opposing a flange 60 on the drum, these shoes being pivotally supported at 61 and 62, on the upper ends of levers 63 and 64 pivoted at their lower ends, as represented at 200 and 201, respectively, to lugs 200a and 201; rising from a plate 200b shown as bolted to a iooring. rlhe levers 63 and 64 are pivotally connected, between their ends, with the outer ends of links 202 and 203,
respectively, which are pivotally connected,

rigid ona shaft 206 journaled in the frame 11 at opposite 'sides of the machine. The shaft 206 is operated, through the medium of the shaft 38, by means of a link 206a pivotally connected at one end, las indicated at 2061, to an upwardly-extending arm 206b rigid onA the shaft 206 and at its opposite end rigidly connected, as indicated at 206'2 with the part 41?. The parts just described are so constructed and arranged, as shown, that when the arms 205 incline in the direction shown of the arm 209 in Fig. 1, the brake-shoes 58-59do not interfere with the free rotation of the drum 18 in clockwise direction in this figure, but in the case of reverse rotation of the drum, by action of the load, the shoe 58 wedges against the flange and arrests rotation of the drum 18, and when the arms 205 incline in the opposite direction, in which position they extend when the clutch 24 isin, the brakeshoes 58-59 do not interfere with free action of the drum in counterclockwise rdirection in Fig. 2, but in case of reverse rotation of the drum, under the action of a load, the shoe 59 will wedge against the fiange 60 and arrest rotation of the drum.
` The mechanism in so far as it has been described, constitutes means whereby the clutch mechanism and comprising the clutches 24 and 25, is automatically moved to a neutral position upon the conclusion of a predetermined number of revolutions required to effect the desired reciprocation of the buckets of the hoist, there being provided for coi-operation with the mechanism described' other mechanism which operates automatically to effect reverse rotation of the drum `18 following vthe lapsing of the desired time interval` required, in the case of hoisting mechanism, to effect the loading and dumping of the buckets, la description of this mechanism, according to one embodiment of my invention, being as follows:
The drive shaft 20 carries at one vend thereof, and rigid thereon, a worm 65 for co-operation with a mutilated worm-wheel 66 pinned on one end of a shaft 67 journaled in a bearing68 on a bracket 68 hung at bearings 68b on the shaft 20, the forward end of this shaft being provided with a collar 69 rigid thereon with its periphery in the formy of a cam and affording an abrupt shoulder 70, the axis of the shaft 67 extending at a right angle to the axis of the shaft 20. VThe bracket 68 is held in the desired position by a bar 93 connected at one end to the shaft206 by a pivoting screw 95 in the end of this shaft, and at its forward end to the bracket 68a as indicated at 94.
The worm-wheel 66, is mutilated yat diametricallyr opposed points, as represented at 71 and 72, the length of these mutilated portions in a direction circumferentially of the worm-wheel being in each case kslightly greater than the length of the worm 65 so that when either of these mutilated portions register with the worm 65, the worm-wheel 66 will be out of driving engagement therewith. The worm-wheel 66 is provided with a crank pin 73 on which the outer end of a rod 74 is journaled, this rod being rigidly connected with one end of a cylinder' 75, the other end of this cylinder containing a hollow plug 76 through vwhich a rod 77 extends, the innery end of this rod being provided with a rigid head 78. A coiled spring 79 is confined between the head 78 andthe end of the cylinder at which the latter is connected with the rod 74,r and a coiled spring 80 is confined between the head 78 and the plug 76, the outer end of the rod 77 being operatively connected with an arm 81 depending from the clutch-shifting lever 26. Thevconnection just referred to involves the aperturing of the arm 81, as represented at 82, throughwhich the rod 77 extends, and the provision of stops, in the form of nuts 83 on this rod at opposite sides of the arm 81. The worm-wheelV 66 ispro- `vided at diametrically opposed points thereon, with laterally-projecting pins 84 and 85 with which co-operate a stop bar 86 slidably mounted at its rear end in an opening 87 in the bracket 68, a coiled spring' 89, surrounding the bar 86 and engaging at one end with a stop surface 90 on this bar and at its other end with the front face of the bracket 68a, operating to exert force onthis bar tending toV move it to the right in Fig. 7 out of a positionin which it extends into the path of movement of the sto s 84 and in the rotation 'of the worm-w eel 66 as hereinafterdescribed. The forward end of the bar 86 is provided with a laterally-extending pin 91 which is slidable, with the bar 86, in a slot 92 in the bar The inner end of the pin 91 carries a roller 96 which, under the action of the spring 89, bears against the periphery of a cam 97, rigid on the shaft 206, the cam portion of this cam being of reversed curvature and presenting the convex upper and lower cam portions 98 and 99 and the intermediate concave portion 100.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The machine is shown in the position it assumes during the driving of the drum 18 in clockwise direction in Fig. 1, the drive being from the shaft 26 through clutch 25, gears 23 and 52, shaft 17, gear 34, gear $35 to drum 18, thus rotating the yoke 44 in clockwise direction in Fig. 1, which causes the pawl device 46 to move along the yoke 44 to the left in Fig. 2, toward the dog ln the continued movement of the parts stated, ,the shoulder 5() engages the shoulder 52 on the dog 54, thus rotating the shaft 38 and cam 39 in clockwise direction in Fig. 1, with the result, by reason of the engagement of cam-surface 39@ with roller 40h, of forcing the rod 41 to the left in Fig. 3 to a position in which both of the clutches 24 and 25 are in neutral position, whereupon the :lrum 18 ceases to rotate. The movement of the rod 41, as stated, effects, through the link 206n the rocking of the shaft 206 in counter-clockwise direction in Fig. 1 to a Josition in which the low part 100 of the cam 97 extends opposite the roller 96, thereby permitting the spring 89 to shift the locking bar 86 to the right in Fig. 6 to a position in which this bar is withdrawn from the position in which it extends into the path of movement of the pins 84 or 85.
1t should be here stated that in the position of the parts as shown in the drawings and which is the position occupied by them during the rotation of the drum 18 in clockwise Vdirection as stated, the mutilated portion 71 of the worm wheel. 66 registers with the worm 65 as shown in Fig. 2, in which position the pin 85 engages the lock-bar 86; and the crank pin 73 occupies a position below, and slightly to the right of, the center of the shaft 67.
In the moving of the clutch mechanism to neutral position, as above described, in which opera-tion the lock-bar 86 is withdrawn stated, the rod 77 is moved to the left in Fig. 2, by reason of its connection with the bell-crank 26, the spring 80, by engagement therewith of the head 78, being under a tension suflicient for shifting the rod 74 to the left in this figure, with the result that the worm-wheel 66 Vis rotated in clockwise direction in Fig. 2, into a position in which the teeth on its periphery engage with the continuously rotating worm 65, whereupon the worm wheel 66 is rotated by this worm one-half of a Vrevolution to a position in which the mutilated portion 72 of the worm-wheel 66 registers with the worm its the pin 73 is carried to the left in Fig. 2, by the rotation of the worm-wheel 66 as stated, the rod 74 and cylinder' 7 5 are forced to the left in Fig. 2 and as this movement continues a force is directed against the rod 77 through the cylinder 75, spring 79 and head 78, operating to force the rod 77 to the left in Fig. 2 and moving the clutch mechanism from a position in which both of the clutches and 25 are in neutrai position, to a position in which the clutch in operative position. The arrangement of the parts is such, as shown, that the cam-disk does not obstruct the movement of the clutch mechanism and the parts directly connected therewith as just stated, in which movement of the clutch mechanism the cam 97, by reason of the link connection 206, is swung downwardlyto a position in which its high point 98 engages the roller thereby again forcing the lockbar 86 to the left in Fig. 1, against the resistance of the spring 89, to a position in which it obstructs the movement of the pin 84 in which position the mutilated portion 72 of the worin-wheel 66 registers with the worm 65, in which position the lock-bar 86 prevents the spring device connecting the arm 81 with the worm-wheel '66, from rotating the worm-wheel out of a position in which the mutilated portion 72 of the worm wheel 66 registers with the worm 65.
The moving of the clutch 24 to clutched position as stated operates to clutch the gear 22 to the shaft 2O whereupon the drive of the drum 18 is reversed, it being then driven from the shaft 20, clutch 24, gears 22, 36, shaft 29, gear 33, gear 34 and gear 35. The operation of the drum in reverse direct-ion as stated operates to drive the shaft 88 in a direction opposite to that hereinbefore described, thereby rotating the yoke 44 in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 1 which causes the pawl device 46 to move along the yoke 44 to the right in Fig. 2, toward the dog In the continued movement of the parts as stated, the shoulder 51 engages the shoulder on the dog 55, thus rotating the shaft 88 and cam 39 in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 1, with the result, by reason of the engagement of cam-surface 89C with roller 4Gb, of forcing the Vrod 41 to the right in Fig. 3 to a position in which both of the clutches 24 and 25 extend in neutral position, whereupon the drum 18 ceases to rotate. The movement of the rod 41, as stated, effects, through the link 2062, the rocking of the shaft 206 in clockwise direction in.
Fig. 1 to a position in which the lower part 100 of the cam 97 extends opposite the roller 96, thereby permitting the spring 89 to shift the locking bar 86 to the right in Fig. 6 to a position in which this bar is withdrawn right in Fig. 2, by reason of its connection.
with the bell-crank 26, the spring 79, by engagement therewith of the head 78, be-
ing under a tension suflicient to shiftthe' rod 74 to the right'in this figure, with the result that the worm wheel 66 is rotated in clockwise direction in Fig.` 2, into a position in which the teeth on its periphery engage withthe continuously rotating worm 65, whereupon the worm wheel 66 is rotated by this Worm one half of a revolution to a position in which the mutilated portion 71 of thefworm wheel 66 registers with the worm 65.` As the pin 73 is carried to the right in Fig. 2, by the rotation of the worm wheel 66 as stated, the rod 74 and cylinder 75 are forced to the right in Fig. 2 and as this movement continues a force is directed against the rod 77 through the cylinder 75, spring 80 and head 78operating to force the rod 77 to the right in Fig. 2 and moving the clutch mechanism from a position in which both of the clutches 24 and 25 are in neutral position, to a position Vin which the clutch 25 is in operative position. The arrangement of the parts is such as shown, that the cam disk does not obstruct the movement of the clutch mechanism and the parts directly Vcontacted therewith, as just stated, in which movement of the clutch mechanism, the cam 97, by reason of the link connection 20621, is swung upwardly to a position in which its high point 99 engages the roller 96 thereby again forcing the lock-bar 86 to the left in Fig. 1, against the resistance of the spring 89, to a position in which it obstructs the movement of the pin 85 in which position the mutilated portion 71 ofthe worm wheel 66 registers with the worm 65, in which position the lockbar 86 prevents the spring device connecting the arm 81 with the worm wheel 66, from rotating the worm wheel out of a position in which the mutilated portion 71 of the worm wheel 66 registers with the worm 65.
It will thus be understood from the foregoing that the tensiondevice interposed between the clutch mechanism and the worm wheel 66 operates alternately to exert a pushing and pulling force on the clutch mechanism to move it alternately in opposite directions from neutral position, thereby 'to effect repeated automatic reversing of the drum 18, and with the desirable time Ainterval betweenpthe arresting of the rotationof the drum 18 in one direction and the starting of the reverse rotation of the drum.
The parts of the struct'ure'are preferably' so constructed and arranged that when the clutch 25 is in clutched position (the position shown inthe drawings), the spring 80 will be under a tension suiicient to hold the pin 85 against the stop bar 86 as shownl in Fig. 2;' and when the yclutch `is in clutched position, in which position of the parts the pin 73 would occupy a position diametrically opposed to that shown inv Fig. 2, the spring 79 will be under such tension as to hold the pin 84 against'the stop bar 86.
Referring to the brake mechanismv de` scribed for the drum18, this mechanism in the position shown in the drawing-per-r mits ythe drum 18 to freely rotate yin clockwise direction in Fig. 1, but should the drum start to rotate in the oppositedirection, with the parts in the position shown in the drawings, as for example under the actionv of a loaded bucket,-should an accident occur or should the power be cut off, the
brake-shoe v58, by reason of the inclinationy of the lever 63 as shown. in Fig. 1, will immediately grip the drum-flange 60 and lock the drum against rotation; l being connected with the shaft 206, when the latter is rotated counter-clockwise in Fig. 1 to a position in which the high part 98 of thecam 97 is in engagement with the roller 96, in which position the clutch 24 is in operative position, these arms will extend to the left, in Fig. 1, of the shaft 206 and the lever 64 will incline to the left in this figure, and thus position the brake mechanism for the gripping of the flange 60, by the shoe 59, in case of accident, or failure of power, which would permit the drum to reverse its rotation under the load therein. Thus the brake mechanism is automatically shifted into proper position for automatically braking the drum, responsive to the alternate clutching and unclutching of the clutches 24 and 25.
The provision of the cam 39 for operating the rod 41 through the pin and roller 40l and 40h, is for the purpose of insuring against the overflow of the clutch-mechanism through neutral position by the action of the drum 18 in the event of overrun of the drum after the latter has moved the clutch-mechanism to neutral position. The .combination of a `driving member, mechanism driven thereby and including a second member adapted to be moved in opposite directions and means to drive said second member from said driving member in opposite directions alternately and movable to neutral position from either oi' its driving positions, and means operating automatically upon said first-named means to cause the latter to operate said second member automatically in a reverse direction including a device for automatically operating on said first-named means to 4cause the latter to be in neutral position in Which said ,driving member is out .of engagement With said second member and comprising a rockinem-ber ,operated from said mechanism in opposite directions, respectively, in the movement .of said second member in opposite directions, a driving gear, a second gear adapted to mesh with said driving gear .and halving `opposed mutilated portions adapted to successively register with said driving gear and normally registering at one of said mutilated portions with said driving gear, a spring element operatively engaging said first-named means and .eccentrically engaging said second gear, releasable resisting mea-ns operatively engaging said second gear, said spring element When said firstnamed means ai'e in either of their driving positions exerting force on said second gear, resisted by said releasable resisting means, and tending to move said second gear into mesh with said driving gear and in the operation of said second gear, following the release o'f said releasable resisting means, becoming tensioned for moving said firstnamed means into a position for reversely driving said second member, and meansy controlled by said rock member for controlling the release ot said releasable resisting means.
