To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anonrn KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, and whose ost-oflice address is 49. East 90th Street, ew York, N. Y., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Box Const uction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to a box construction made of a relatively flexible material such as cardboard and more particularly to a box construction having an extension bottom or top.
It has been the general practice hitherto in the manufacture of this type of box to form either the cover member or the body member, or both, by first associating a. strip of material which is formed to serve as the upstanding side walls with the bottom member either by adhesive or more generally by an adhesive strip secured partly to the side wall strip and partly to the bottom memberand then to aflix to the composite construction thus formed as by an adhesive a second or supplemental bottom member which is larger than the first mentioned bottom member and'which therefore extends beyond the side walls thereof so as to provide the extension bottom.
This method of manufacturing the box is open to a number of objections among which is the increased cost of manufacture due to the fact that first, an increased amount of material is necessary; second, the box section being made ing these arts and third, that the box can not be finished ofi by an outer coveringhof 1 it a redetermined color or design unti s 11 completed because of the manner of associating these parts.
One of the important objects of my invention is the provision of an arrangement whereby the side wall forming strip and the bottom forming member are so arranged and conformed t at the two can be as sociated together 1*" their own conformation and dimensions and without requiring any other connecting means or member and more dparticularly so arranged and conforms that the two can be associated together so as to provide the assembly with an extension bottom to the receptacle.

The object generally of my invention is a method for forming a box construction with an extending bottom in which the number of parts are reduced to a minimum and therefore the steps necessary for their assembly also correspondingly reduced and all being capable of being formed by machine and the production of an improved box of the character desired at a minimum of cost.
While I have illustrated my invention in the drawings as emplo ed in the manufacture of a heart-shape box made up of a body section having an extension bottom and a cover section having an extension to it will be understood that this is done more y for purposes of illustration and that my invention is not to be so limited except as called for by the claims.
For the attainment of these objects and such other objects as ma hereinafter apear or be pointed out, have illustrated 1n the drawings one form of my invention in which;

Boxes intended for candy and similar articles are generally made up so as to have an attractive appearance and this attrac ill r the edges of the first ficult if not tive appearance is attained generally either by giving to the box an attractive conforma-. tion or ornamentation-generally both. Boxes of this character are generally made of cardboard and one of the methods of giving to the boxits attractive appearance is to rovide the body member with an exten ng bottom and where desired to do likewise with the top member.
- In the illustrated embodiment I have shown both the top member and the bottom member, one as rovided with an extending bottom and t e other as provided w1th an extending to and so arranged that the two telesco e. is theyare dup icates in all respects, tlle description of one w1ll suffice for both and in this descriptmn, I will limit myself to describing merely the construction of the body member.
The body portion of boxes of the character is generally made of cardboard or s1m1- lar material and comprise a bottom and an upstanding continuous side wall and to ve to such box construction an extendlng ottom, one of the methods employed has been as follows: A strip of material of predetermined length is so shaped as to rovlde the desired continuous upstanding si e wall which may be circular, heart shaped or of any other desired outline and a bottom member of an outline to corres nd with thatof the upstanding side wall 1s either pasted directly thereto or more enerally fixed thereto by means of an ad esive str1p of tape which is secured partly to the bottom of the side wall and partly to the lowor surface of the bottom member and where the box is to be irregularly shaped, as in the heart shaped box\ of the illustrated embodiment of the drawings, it is found difimpossible to apply this adhesive strip by machinery and hand application is necessary.
A second bottom slightly wider all around than the bottom already secured to the up wardly extending side wall is then pasted or otherwise secured to the bottom already fixed to the side wall so as to have the edges of the second bottom extend beyond mentioned bottom and beyond the side walls, thus providing the extending bottom.
Where an adhesive strip was used to secure the first mentioned bottom to the side walls. it will be understood that it was impossible to ornament or color the side walls before the box was fully completed because the application of the adhesive strip would necessarily cover this ornamentation and destroy the effect thereof. This method of manufacturing the box not only re uires at least the number of parts indicated ut also successive operations for their association. In adclition, the box so produced will in,-
shape or an attractive surface om its manner of assembly.
In the drawings, I illustrate my method of formi a box of this character and upon view ng Fi 1 of the drawing, 'it will be observed t at I employ a side wall forming strip 10, cut from a redetermined leiggth to form the-outer wal of the box he y which it is desired to form and that this strip already has its outer "surface ornamented as desired in any preferred or desired manner as by covering it with a colored paper or silk 11, it being understood that the ornamentation can be applied in any other manner. This stri '10 is then given the outline or shape whic it is desired that the box shall have and which-at 15 in Fig. 2 isshown to be heart shaped. This shape or outline is given to the strip 15 by shaping in any desired or preferred manner as by a pressing or mouldlng operation and either simultaneously with the shapin of this strip or either before or after wliere desired, the strip 15 is molded or pressed so as to provide the doubled over lip 16 projecting outwardly from its outer surface and on its inner surface, the groove 17. The bottom 18 of the box body is given an outline which will which it is desired the box shall have and which in the illustrated embodiment is heart shaped and is of such dimension that when correspond to the shape herently open the defects which result the ends 19 and 20 of the strip 15 are brought together as in Fig. 4, the outer heart shaped edge 21 of the bottom 18 will be received within the groove 17 and locked therein when the lip end 19 of the strip 15 is secured to the o posite free end of said strip 20 in any pre erred ordesired manner as y the brads 22. This bottom member 18 is also given its surface ornamentation as by being covered by ornamented or colored paper or silk 23 before its assembly. With the edge of the bottom 18 received and locked in the groove 17 as described, the two walls 24 and 25 of the outwardly extending lip or flange together in any preferred or desired manner into close contact with and down upon the opposite faces of the continuous edge of the bottom 18 in the manner shown in Fig. 5 so that the bottom 18 is firmly secured against removal. Where desired, the engagement between the outer continuous edge of the bottom 21 and the'two walls 24-and 25 of the outwardly extending Ii 16 may be made more secure by the use 0 adhesive either upon the inner surface of the walls 24 and 25 or upon either or both of the opposite surfaces of the continuous edge of the bottom member 18.
By my invention, it will be observed that I am enabled to obtain a box with an extending bottom by the employement of but two members, namely, an upstanding wall forming strip and a bottom member and that the ornamentation can be applied to these mem- ,bers while they are in strip form and before assembly and in fact, before. they have been cut from a continuous sheet and that the box thus produced requires not only a reduced number of elements but a reduced number of operations for their assembly.
Furthermore, the necessity for any hand operation is completely eliminated even though the box may be irregularly shaped and in addition, the union between the bottom member and the side wall members will not only be a better one, but as the. extending edge is formed of three superposed layers, added strength and rigidity will be given to this portion of the box.
It will be understood that the groove 17 is formed by forcing outwardly the material of the side wall forming strip, longitudinally thereof and along a line substantially parallel to the bottom and adjacent the bot.- tom so that the two inclined walls 24 and 25 are formed of suflicient depth to permit them to be pressed down upon and grip a substantial portion of the edge of the bottom so as not only to provide a bottom extension of substantial dimensions, but also to give a gripping engagement between these walls and the edges of the bottom over a substantial area.
The shaping of the strip 10 so as to give it the desired outline as shown in Fig. 2 and the provision therein of the groove 17 is preferably made in a single operation, as by (tlhe employment of appropriate moulding ies.
The presence of the outstanding lip 16 formed by the groove 17 not only serves the purposes set forth, but also makes the upstanding wall more rigid and less likely to buckle and in addition, minimizes the warping tendency of the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The process of forming a paper box construction having an extension end wall, which comprises the step or steps of simultaneously forming in the strip which is to serve as the side wall of the box, a flange projecting from its outer face and a groove on its inner face, positioning said strip about the end wall member to have the strip form a continuous outer wall about the end wall member with the edge of the latter received in the groove-of the former, and forcing the opposite surfaces of the groove down upon the end wall member to have the strip form a continuous outer wall about the end wall member with the edge of the latter received in the groove of the former, the said groove and said edge having had adhesive applied therebetween, and forcing the opposite surfaces of the groove down upon the opposite faces of the edge of the end wall member to cause the two to be thereby secured together adhesively along said edge.
3. A paper box construction comprising an extension'end wall member and a side wall member, said construction being formed by providing a groove on the inner face of a strip of material, positioning said strip about the end wall member to have the strip form a continuous outer wall about the end wall member with the edge of the latter received in the groove of the former, and forcing the opposite surfaces of the groove down upon the opposite faces of the edge of the end wall member to cause the two .to be thereby secured together along said edge.
4. As an element of a paper box construction consisting of a side wall member positioned about an extension disk bottom received in and engaged by a groove in said side wall member and secured thereto by said engagement, a strip having a groove formed in its inner face and so constructed and arranged as to form a flange extendin outwardly from the outer face thereof an within which roove is to be freely received the edge of t e disk bottom, said oove being so constructed and arrange that when the strip is positioned about the disk bottom with the disk bottom edge received in said groove, the faces of the groove can be pinched together about said ed e so as to thereby secure the side wallan bottom wall together against separation.
