Description
F. E. BEST MORTISE LOCK Jan. 5 1926.
Filed June '7, 1923 Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK ELLISON BEST, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK E. BEST, INCL,
OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, A CORPORATION OF WASHINGTON.
MORTISE LOCK.
Application filed June 7, 1923.
To all wk am i only concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ELLISON Bnsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented a new and useful. Mortise Lock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pin tumbler mortise locks and the object of my improvement is to provide a pin tumbler mortise lock of the cabinet type that may be successfully applied to relatively thin doors.
In the application of pin tumbler looking structure to locks of the mortise type it is common practice on heavy locks for doors of considerable thickness to provide a threaded opening in the secondary lock housing that contains the latch mechanism and, in assembling, to screw the lock core that contains the pin tumbler structure into said threaded opening after the secondary mechanism is inserted into the mortise in the door and to then look said core against turning by a screw that is operated from the front edge of the door and is rendered inaccessible when the door is closed.
This method of application is not adaptable on thin doors of the cabinet type because the secondary lock housing is, of necessity, made from light material that does not afford suflicient strength to permit attachment in this manner, and further, because there is not suflicient room for the locking screw in thin mortise locks of this type.
The present invention makes possible the adaptation of a pin tumbler locking structure to a thin mortise lock of this nature by providing a lock having a core case from which the core may be removed, and, by providing means within the core case that is accessible only when the lock core is removed for securing the core case to the secondary lock housing. The removable core thus makes possible a structure that permits the use of pin tumbler mechanism in a thin mortise lock of this nature and the use of a pin tumbler mechanism makes possible the carrying out of a one key system in which an individual needs only one key to operate any number of different locks.
With the above and other objects in Serial No. 643,962.
view, the invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts as will be more clearly hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the edge of a door in which a pin tuniibler mortise lock constructed in accordance with my invention is installed.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing a portion of the side of the same door.
Fig. 3 is a detached view in side elevation of the mortise lock with the lock core removed.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view substantially on broken line H of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are detached perspective views of the secondary lock or latch housing, the lock core housing, and the lock core respectively as said three parts might appear if detached and moved apart a short distance from each other.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, 8 designates a relatively thin door in which this lock is installed said door being prepared for the reception of the lock by providing in the same a cavity or mortise of rectangular cross section that extends from the front edge of the door rearwardly and is of substantially the shape indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and by boring from the side of the door a hole as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 that intersects said mortise cavity.
This lock comprises three distinct parts, namely, a latch housing or secondary lock mechanism, Fig. 5, a lock core case or housing, Fig. 6, and a lock core, Fig. 7.
The secondary lock mechanism proper, which is not herein disclosed but which may be of any desired construction, is disposed within a housing 9 of relatively thin rectangular shape that is secured to a front plate 10 which is provided with suitable holes 11. through which screws 12 may be inserted to secure the same to the door 8. An opening 13 is provided in one side of the housing 9.
A core case 14: preferably cylindrical on the exterior and provided with an internal recess 15 of figure 8 cross sectional shape is adapted to be secured to the side of the secondary housing 9 by screws 16 that screw into nuts 17 within the inside of such housing, see Fig. The nuts 17 are preterabiy permanent-1y fastened within the housing 9,
A lock core 18 having an end flange 19 is arranged to be removably locked within the recess 15 of the core case 1%, said removable lock core afiording access to the screws 16 when removed and preventing access to said screws when it is inserted. The screws 16 are'located on opposite sides of the figure 8 recess 15 and the flange 19 on the core covers the heads of such screws when the core is inserted in the core case.
In installing this loclqthe door-is niortiscd to receive the secondaryhousing 9 and plate '10 and ahole of the same diameter asthe exterior of the core case? A. is bored to intersect the mortise at the proper location. The secondary housing is then inserted in the mortise and the core case 1.4- with the core re-H core 18 may then be inserted and locked within the core case l-t thereby protecting the heads ofithe screws 16 and making it impossible to remove said screws without first removing the lock core.
The screws 16 constitute the only means needed for securing the core case 14: to the housing '9 and the use of said screws for this purpose is inade possible by the; provision of a lock core that is readily removable from thecore case.
Thesecondary housing 9, in a thin mortise lock of this nature is notstrong enough to permit a lock core to be screwed thereinto and no room is afforded in said secondary housing for the provision of locking screws that are accessible from the edge of the door or drawer into which the lock is mortised thus making it practically impossible to adaptgpin tumbler locks that depend on this method of securing the lock core to the lock housing to a thin cabinet type mortise lock.
The core case 14 is open at the innerend and is arranged to register with the opening 13 in the secondary housing 9 when it is secured thereto.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose what I no consider-to be a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that changes in the same may be resorted to within the scope of the "following claims.
I claim: 7
