To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. I/VAnsrr, a
citizen ofthe United States, and resident of 7 Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsln, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Hames, of which for adjustably and detachably connecting the lower end portions of the 'hames together.
It is one of theobjects of the present invention to provide hames having a chain for fastening the. lowerends together in which means are provided for locking the chain to the hame against loss when the haine is in open position. v i
A further object of the invention is to I provide hames having means for adjusting the distance apart ofthe lower end portions of the hame members to fit collars of different sizes.
A further object of the'i'nvention is to provide hames in which .the use of straps and buckles are eliminated and all of the adjustable parts are firmly held in position.
A further objectof the invention is to provide hames in which all of the extra links permitting the adjustment of the haines are positioned within the tubular portion thereof. v

With the above and. other objects in view, the invention consists ofv the unproved ha ne construction and its parts and combination as set forth in the claims and all equivalents thereof. j V j In the accompanying drawing inwhich the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:

Referring to the drawing, the numerals 8 and 9 indicate the hame members which are preferably formed of metal and are of Ushape in cross section at their lower end portions. The forward lower portion of the heme-member 8 is provided with a line of perforations 10 to formjtransverse bars 11 which are selectively engaged by a book 12 positioned within the hame member and connected to one end of a chain 13 to adjust; the distance apart of the lower end portions of the hame members. The lower end of the hame member 8 islformed with a cross shaped opening 14 which 'isof a size to permit the free movement of the. chain therethrough with the exception of the hook 12 at the inner endof the chain and the 3 larger link 15 mounted on the outer end of said chain. Said larger link 15 is formed with an inner hook portion 15 intermediate its length which may be-..engag'ed by the next link when it is desired tomake an adto correspond with the hook portions '16 of-the hamej member 9 sothat whenthe handle part of the lever is in closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, the hook portions will register witheach other. The lower. end portion of the lever'hookis formed with a flat face 19 which is engaged by the free end of a flat spring 20 and yieldingly held in locked position, as clearly shown'in Fig.
2; Said spring is curved at one end and is mounted in a'pocket2l formed in the hame member 9 and firmly held in position therein. f N f In assembling the parts, the spring is snappedinto the pocket 21 and the chain 13 r is inserted through the cross shaped opening 14 and the hook 12 is then secured to the end of the inserted 'links' and the chain is thus non-removably fastened to the hame member.
In use, the'hook 12 is extended around one of the cross bars 11 to adjust'the chain" to the desired length and the lever hook handle is swung downwardly to the position shown in Fig. land the large link 15 is slipped over the handle and the handle is then swung upwardly to its closed position within'the hame-member, In moving upwardly, the link'15 will be carried over the 1 hooked ends 16 of the'hanie-member and on the inner'side of the-pivot pin and form an 1 eye andthus relieve the lever hook'o'ithe 1 strain. When the lever handle is swung into the hame member, the strain of the chain will hold the hook lever in its closed position due to the strain being onthe inner side of the lever, but in addition thereto the flat endoi' the lever hook is engaged by the free end of the springQO which firmly holds the lever in closed position against accidental 'movement.
