Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HoDenN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oampbellsville, in the county of Taylor, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lash4 boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in washboards, and particularly to metal washboards.

One object of the invention is to provide a washboard which is simple in construction, and which is strong and durable in operation.

Another object is to provide a washboard which is composed of metal parts securely held together and which are not readily subject to deterioration, and in which the rubbing surface is of comparatively great area.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the acc0mpanying drawing.

In the drawing:

Figure l is a front elevation of a washboard made in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal central sectional view through the device.

Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a front elevation of the upper portion of a modified form of washboard, in which the frame is arched.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, and especially .to Figures 1, 2, and 3, the frame of the washboard includes the side members 10, formed from metal tubing, and being connected at their upper ends by the transverse tube Y11, of the same diameter In the inner longitudinal faces of the side members 10 there are formed the longitudinal series of openings 12. Disposed transversely between the side members 10 and having their opposite ends disposed through said openings 12, are the tubular bars 13, of smaller diameter than the bars or tubes of the frame, and forming the rubbing surface of the washboard. In each of the side members 10, 'and in the outer side thereof, in alinement with the endmost of the openings 12, are the openings' 14, and disposed through these openings, and

extending longitudinally through the centers' lof the endmost of the tubes 13, are the tie rods 15, the oppositegends of which are headed against the outer faces of the side members. These rods serve to insure the proper spacing of the side members 10, and to prevent separation thereof.

On the lower ends of the sidemembers 10 are fitted the knobs 16, which may be formed from rubber, wood, or other desired material. v

A metal plate 17 is disposed to cover the portion of the frame bounded by the uppermost tube 11, the adjacent portions of the side members, and the upper transverse tube 1l, and at the rear ofthe frame, said plate being welded, or otherwise secured tothe parts named. rIhis plate has its upper end engaged around thertransverse tube 11 and extended ka short distance forward beyond the frame, which is shown at 18, while the lower end is bent atfright angles, and eX- tends forwardly, as at 19, where it is secured to the uppermost tube 13.

The upper portionv of the frame is illustrated in Figure 4 as being arched, at 20,

and when so formed the plate 21 is slightly` modified to conform to the curve of the arch, as clearly seen in this figure. It will, of course, be seen that when so arched, the side members 22 and the arch 20 will constitute a single length of tubing. Otherwise the -construction of the form shown in Figure 4 is identical to that of the other figures.

What is claimed is:

A washboard.' including a substantiallyv U-shaped frame having a rubbing surface extending thereacross, and a brand board having its lower end secured to the upper end of said rubbing surface and extending transversely thereof, the upper end of the brand board extending transversely of the bightJ portion of the frame and beyond and at right angles to the plane of the face of the washboard, said brand board being secured to said bight portion and having its side edges secured to the si'de members of the frame between the said bight and the upper end of the rubbing surface. f
