AUXILIARY ELECTRIC WATER HEATER.

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. \Vnmson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county. of King and State of \Vashington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Auxiliary Electric \Vater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in auxiliary electric water heaters for use in connection with the usual radiators of hot water heating systems and the object of my invention is to provide an electric water heater together with suitable valve means which may be installed on a radiator of a hot water heating system in such a manner as to make it possible to convert the usual hot water radiator into an electric radiator when the hot water heating system is not in operation.
Further object is to provide auxiliary electric heating apparatus that is simple and inexpensive in construction, efficient in operation and easy to install on radiators of the form commonly used in hot water heating systems.
Other and more specific objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a radiator of the hot water type showing my auxiliary electric heating apparatus installed thereon.
Fig. 2 is a detached View in elevation of a valve used in connection with my electric heater and radiator; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in cross section of said valve substantially on broken lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings throughoutwhich like reference numerals designate like parts 4 designates a radiator of the form commonly used in hot water heating systems, said radiator having a water inlet 5 connected with a supply pipe 6 that may extend to a furnace or boiler and having a water outlet pipe 7 that may extend to a pressure tank which has a return connection to the furnace or boiler.
In accordance with my invention I provide in the pipe 6 adjacent the radiator a a two way valve 8 and further provide an auxiliary electric water heater 9 that is connected by pipe 10 with valve 8 and by another pipe 11 with the upper portion of the radiator 41.
The valve 8, shown in Fig. 8, comprises a housing of substantially T shape having a tubular valve member 12 extending therethrough, said valve member 12 having valve openings 13 and l l arranged to selectively register with openings 15 and 16, or 16 and 17 in the valve housing.
The radiator may be one of a plurality ofradiators included in a hot water heating system and may operate in the usual manner. When the hot water heating system is in operation the valve member 12 will be in the position shown in Fig. 3 thereby establishing a passageway through pipe 6 antL inlet 5 to radiator 4: and cutting out the electric heater 9. hen the hot water heating system is not in operation and it is desired to use one radiator l of the system I then valve member 12 is turned through an angle of substantially degrees in a counter-clockwise direction so that passageways 13 and 14 will establish communication between electric heater 9 and radiator 4 and close communication with pipe 6 that goes to the furnace. When connected in this manner radiator 4 may be used inde pendently of the hot water heating system, the electric heater 9 heating the water which passes through pipe 11 into radiator 4, and, as it cools passes downwardly and is drawn through inlet 5, valve 8 and pipe 10 into and through electric heater 11 thus maintaining a continuous circulation of water in the radiator and keeping the water hot at all times.
This electric heater may be installed in connection with any ordinary hot water radiator, any desired number of radiators in a system being equipped with said heater, thereby rendering the radiators useful individually when the heating system or furnace with which they are connected is not in operation.
The installation herein shown is especially advantageous when it is desired to use one or more radiators in a system but is not desired to keep the entire system in opera tion.
This apparatus is easy to install in connection with radiators of the usual construction and is simple and reliable in operation and efficient in its heating.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose a preferred embodiment oi. my invention but it will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that numerous changes may be made within the scope and spirit of the following claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a hot water radiator, having water inlet means, of an electric heater connected with said hot water radiator at two points at different elevations and means controlling the opening and closing of the water inlet connection and the lower electric heater connection with said radiator.
2. The combination with a hot water radiator having the usual water conduit pipes connected with the lower portion thereof, of an electric heater connected with said water conduit pipes and with the upper portion of said radiator and a two way valve controlling the connection between said Water conduit pipes and said electric heater and arranged to connect said electric heater and disconnect said water conduit pipes or to connect said water conduit pipes and disconnect said electric heater relative to said radiator.
3. The combination with a hot water radiator, of a water inlet connected with the lower portion of said radiator, a two way valve connected with said water inlet, a water supply pipe connected with said two way valve, an electric heater, a conduit connecting said electric heater with said two way valve, another conduit connecting said electric heater with the upper portion of said radiator, said two way valve being arranged to selectively open a passageway between said radiator and said water supply pipe and close the passageway between said radiator and said electric heater or to open the passageway between said electric heater and said rae-iator and close the passageway between said radiator and said water supply pipe.
