To all whom t may conce/ra.:
Be it known that I, FRANK XV. Tin-moan, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Marion, in the county ot' Grant and State oit Indiana, have invented an Improvement in ldrenches, otwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench and more particularly to a pipe wrench of the Stillson type having a slidable jaw. The object of my invention is the provision ot a pipe wrench ot this type so constructed as to be quickly and easily adjusted to position, to save the time and conserve the energ-y and patience ot the operator, and also so constructed as to be suficiently strong and rigid to withstand the strains thereon in the use thereof, the parts being so assembled as to maintain their operative positions when f in use.
VIn carrying out my invent-ion, l preterably employ a handle member havin fr a jaw member connected to one end thereot, and a trame member pivotally connected to the handle member and acting as a guide Y.tor a slidable jaw member, together with means lor adjusting the slidable jaw member to position, and devices for normally maur taining the slidable jaw member and the said means in contact with one another, and also tor readily disengaging the said means trom the slidable jaw member to make the slidable jaw member readily slidable to place, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

Referring to the drawing it will be seen that in carrying out this invention, the wrench includes a handle member having lugs 11 at one end thereot1 with a jaw member 12 Xed in position in relationship to the lugs 11 by a rivet or bolt 13 or otherwise. The, jaw member 12 as is customary, is provided with a series of teeth for engaging a pipe to be turned.
In a suitable position, a frame member 14 is connect-ed to the handle member 10. As illustrated, this Jframe member 14 is pivntally connected 111.0 the handle member 10 Serial No. 73 ,V4-G.
as indicated at 15. The handle member 10 is also provided with oppositely disposed lugs 1G and 17 against which the rearward edgesof the trame member bear, it being understood that the inner portions oit the trame member span the adjacent portions of the handle. The wrench also includes a slidable jaw member; This preferably comprises a shank 18 slidable in bearings provided therefor in the head member 14. The in-` ner edge ot this shank member is provided with a series of teeth or screw-threads 19 which are preferably undercut, as-illustrat ed. The slidable jaw member also includes a head 2O in which a jaw member 21 is suitably secured.V ln some instances as -will be understood, the jaw member 21 may bemade integral with the head 20. lt will also be understood that the jaw member 21 cooperates with the jaw member 12 in engaging thepipe to be turned in the use of the wrench.
The side walls of the traine member 1li are provided withv apertures for the reception ot a nut 22 through which the shank 18 ot the slidable jaw member also'passes. This nut is annular in construction and interiorly is provided with teeth or screw threads for engaging the teeth or screwthreads 19 ot the shank-18. The nut 22 is normally maintained in position with the threads thereoic in engagement with the threads 19 by means ot a pin 23 extending into a. recess 2li in the handle and actuated by a spring 25 for this purpose. At its outer end a button 2G extends appreciably beyond the frame and at its inner end .is
adapted to bear against the outer surface of the nut 22, so that by depressing the button the nut may be moved inwardly against the action ot the spring' 25 to free or disengage thenut from the shank of the slidable j aw member, thereby making it readily possible to shift the slidable jaw member to place, andby releasing the button, the springl automatically returns the nut to engagement with the teeth on the shank, when as will be understood, the adjustment of the parts to position is readily effected.
The improved wrench also includes a guide or bearing member 27 adapted to contact with the toothed edge of the shank 18, and to be maintained in such position by means of a pin 28 extending therefrom and into a recess 29 in the handle, and a spring .30 extending between the base of the recess (lil lli)
and the under surface of the guide memthe shank member 18 may be fitted with a stop pin 31 to limit the outward movement of the slidable jaw member, and to prevent the same from becoming entirely disengaged from the other parts of the wrench.
F rom the foregoing, it will now be understood that the slidable jaw member may be easily and quickly shifted to place by disengaging the nut from the teeth of the shank and the parts of the wrench then readily adjusted to position after the nut has been permitted to re-engage the teeth on the shank of the slidable jaw. It will be noted that the teeth of the slidable liaw are slightly undercut, which causes the nut to remains in closek Contact with the teeth when pressure is applied to the wrench,
thereby maintaining the parts in their adjusted positions. It is ,also to be noted that the nut member'is suiiiciently large to provide an opening therein of the necessary size to allow the shank of the slidable jaw member to move through the same in `ad-V justing the parts to position, and at the same time to permit for the necessary engagement with the shank of the slidable jaw member for making such contact therewith as will maintain the parts in their operative positions, and to thereby withstand all ordinary working pressures brought to bear on the wrench. It will also be noted that the lateral recesses in the outer part of the frame member are so shaped as to provide acentralizing seat for the nut which prevents it from having any lateral movement, and thereby-assists the spring and pin construction in normally maintaining the nut in its operative position.
It will furthermore be understood that the wrench as hereinbefore described, may be changed in construction within the meaning of the appended claims without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention, and that a quick automatic closing of the jaws of the wrench is effected by the form of the ratchet teeth in the sliding jaw.
I claim as my invention:
1, In a pipe wrench, a handle, a f'ame pivotally mounted on the handle, a jaw member having a shank slidable in the frame, a device engaging the slidable jaw to adjust the same to position, means for shifting the device laterally of the slidable jaw and independently th'ereotl for disengaging the same from the slidable jaw thereby permitting the slidable jaw to ybe shiftable to place, a guide member, and means for yieldingly maintainingt-he guide member in contact with the shank of the slidable jaw.
2. In .a pipe wrench, a handle, a frame pivot-ally mounted on the handle, a jaw member having a shank slidable in the frame, there being a series of screw-threads provided at the inner side of the said shank, a nut mounted in the frame and surrounding the said shank `and provided interiorly with screw-threads adapted to engage the screw-threads on the shank, the said nut being sufficiently large to permit the shank to pass freely therethrough, a springactuated pin bearing against one side of the nut to normally maintain the same in position with the screw-threads thereof in engagement with the screw-threads of the shank, and a button movable in the frame at the opposite side of the. nut for moving the nut against the action of the springactuated pin, to free the nut from engagement with the shank, thereby permitting the shank to be shifted to place in the frame. v f
3. In a pipe wrench, a handle, a frame pivotally mounted on, the handle, a jaw member having a shank slidable in the frame, a nut mounted in the frame for fengaging the shank of the aw member, meansV for normally maintaining the nut in engagement with the shank, means for shifting the nut laterally and independently of the shank to free the -same from engagement with the shank, to permit the shank to-slide in the frame, a guide member, and means for yieldingly maintaining the guide mem-` ber in contact with theshank of the said jaw member. n y
4;. In a pipe wrench, a handle, a frame pivotally mounted on the handle, arjaw member having a shank slidable in the said frame, the said shank at one side thereof having a series of teeth, a nut also mounted in the frame member and through which the said"shankfreely passes, the said nut being provided interiorly with teeth to engage the teeth on the shank, a spring-actuated pin for normally maintaining the nut in engagement with the teeth of the shank, a button for shifting the nut to disengage the same from the teeth of the shank, a guide member, andra spring for yieldingly maintaining the guide member in position in engagement with the screw-threaded side of the shank of the jaw member.
