Description

Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES JOHN r. Aconn, or ivroivfreoni., wns'r vrnernra.
IVRENCH.
Application led August 29, 1922.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. Aoonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montcoal, in the county of Raleigh and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in sliding jaw wrenches, adapted for use as either a pipe or nut wrench; and has for its primary object to provide an exceedingly simple, cheap, and effective device of this description, the movable jaw of which may be adjusted to any desired point and there held by the grasp of the handle of the device.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrench of the above indicated character, which can be easily and quickly adjusted for engagement with a nut or pipe, and avoid the use of strength to bring about the adjustment of the sliding movable jaws, and to make the Wrench out of three pieces of metal only.
These and like objects of my invention will be better understood as the description proceeds and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and which clearly illustrates the -const-ruction and operation of my invention,
Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench made in accordance with my improvement,
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the wrench.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, l represents a stationary jaw, formed with or secured upon a shank 2, which latter is preferably rectangular in section and has ratchet teeth 3 formed upon the one longitudinal edge thereof. A movable jaw 4L is formed'upon the inner end of a shank 5. The shank 5 of the movable jaw is preferably rectangular in cross section and has ratchet teeth G formed on the one edge of same.
Each of the shanks 2 with a handle 7.
A sleeve 8 which is also rectangular in cross section to conform to the shape of the Shanks 2 and 5 is pivotally connected as at 9 to the shank 5 of the movable jaw.
From the foregoing description of my invention taken in connection withl the acand 5 is provided Serial No. 585,105.
companying drawing, it can be readily seen that when a pipe or such is placed in position between the serrated edges l() of the stationary and movable jaws, and the handles 7 are pressed together that the ratchet teeth 3 of the stationary aw and the ratchet teeth G of the movable jaw will be brought into engagement with each other and the tighter the stress is upon the nut or pipe, the tighter the stress will be on the handles 7 thus causing the ratchet teeth to firmly en- .and lock with each other. It will be observed that upon grasping rthe tool handle 7 the shank f3 will tend to sever from the part el. rlfhis is eliminated dne to the inclined end of the sleeve engaging the member 2 and holding the same against lateral movement. Thus a positive engagement of the two serrated jaws is had.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that any further explanation as to the construction, operation and objects of same are unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination `and arrangement of parts.
wWhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A wrench of the class described comprising a pair of pa allel shank members having their adjacent opposed edges serrated and adapted for engagement one with the other, a handle formed on the one end of each of said shank members, an inverted U- shaped sleeve pivotally secured adjacent the ends of the arms thereof to one of said shank JOHN P. ACORD.
