To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ LOUIS Miinnnk, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Charlottenburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Cooling of Cylinders, for which I have filed applications as follows: Germany, Aug. 13, 1917; England, Sept. 16, 1920; Holland, June 21, 1920; Norway, June 30, 1920; Denmark, June 25, 1920; Czechoslovakia, June 7, 1920; Canada, July 10, 1920; Japan, July 23, 1920; Austria,June 9, 1920; Hungary, June 19, 1920; Poland, June 28, 1920; Switzerland, June 12, 1920; Belgium, July 2, 1920; France, July 10, 1920; Italy, June 30, 1920; Spain, June 30, 1920, of which the following is a specification.
My invention refers to cylinders of nternal combustion engines provided with water cooling jackets and its particular object is to improve the distribution of the cooling water in such a manner as to exert different cooling effects on different portions of the cylinder wall.
In the drawings affixed to this specification and forming part thereof a motor cylinder embodying my invention is illustrated by way of example.
In the drawings V Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on the line I-I in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 2 a cross-section on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the cylinder at is provided with two radial ribs b and c which together with the shell -6 form a Water-jacket d of annular cross-section. Above the rib c this water-jacket is divided into sections by longitudinal ribs f, said sections extending upwards to the valve chambers and the top water outlet of the cylinder.
Now, the radial rib 0 is pierced by borings g, g of various diameters proportional according to the amount of heat to be removed in the various sections, so that by aid of said borings or passage less cooling water may for instance be pressed through between the suction valves and more between the exhaust valves, it being assumed that the cooling water be discharged June 21, 1920; Sweden,
through a connecting-piece i arranged in th'ecenter of the cylinder head k9 7 This arrangement operates as follows.
The water is pressed into the ring-shaped space d between the ribs 6 and c and then led along the cylinder and around the valve seats in varying quantities corresponding to the different diameters of the passages g, g in the ribs 0. Thus, by suitably di-.
Inensioning the passages the water will pass 1 through with various velocities whereby the removal of varying quantities of heat from the different parts is rendered possible. In such places where large accumulations of heat are liable to occur,v an increased velocity of the water can be obtained by designlng the cross-sections forthe water passages correspondingly, so that a more vigorous exchange of heat takes place at these points. maintain approximately equal temperatures all over the cylinder wall.
I claim: v V 1. In a motor cylinder in combination, a
water jacket surrounding said cylinder and having an inlet at its lower portion and an outlet at its upper portion, a radial partition in said jacket, dividing the same into upper and lower chambers, longitudinal partitions on said cylinder in said upper chamber between said radial partition and water outlet, and passages of different diameters in said radial partition for connecting said chambers to permit water in varying quantities to reach different parts of said upper chamber.
2. The comb'nation'of a motor cylinder, a water jacket surrounding the same, a radial partition in said jacket whereby an an nular space is formed between said partition and one end of said jacket, a water admission port on the jacket communicating with said annular space, axial ribs upon the cylinder located in the space between the partition and the other end of the water jacket, a water exit port communieating with said other end of the jacket and passages in the radial partition located intermediate of the axial ribs and of differ- By this means it is possible'to.
angles to the axial-line of said cylinder and dividing said jacket into upper and lower chambers, longitudinal partitions connecting said cylinder and water jacket, said longitudinal partitions being in said upper chamber between the first mentioned partition and the water outlet, and passages of different diameters in said first mentioned partition providing communications between said chambers to permit water in varying quantities to reach different parts of said upper chamber,
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
, FRANZ 'LOUISTMIADLEB.
