IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLE ATTACHMENTS TO SCRUBBING-BRUSHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 56,158, dated October 20, 1874; application filed August 1, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRISON P. Hoon, of the city of Indianapolis, State of Indiana, have invented an Improvement in Attaching Handles to Scrubbing-Brushes, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to an improved device for attaching handles to scrubbing-brushes, or other scrubbing devices, whereby the handle may be readily attached to or detached from the scrubber, and the position of the handle in relation to the scrubber be altered at will, as hereinafter set forth.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

In Fig. 1, a is a plate, which is in form the frustum of a cone, the top surface of which is at right angles with a line passing centrally from apex to base of the cone, and the base of which is at an acute angle thereto, making the plate higher at one side than the other, as shown. 0 is a conical socket, the inside of which fits the conical sides of the plate a, and on one side of which, at a suitable angle, is formed a socket, b,-for the reception of a handle. s is athumb-screw, which, passing through the center of the conical socket 0, is there secured in such manner that it is free to turn, but will not fall out, which result is accomplished either by means of a pin passed through the screw, inside the socket, or by riveting, as shown. It screws into the plate a, and has a shoulder, a, which bears on the socket, and serves to fasten the two together, as shown.

The operation of my device is as follows: The plate a is first screwed or otherwise fastened to the back of an ordinary scrubbingbrush; The socket I), having inserted therein a handle of suitable length, is now placed with its conical socket a over the plate a, and the screw 8 screwed into the plate, when the two are firmly fastened together by the conical sur- Fig. 2 is a faces of the plate and socket being forced together. By slightly loosening the thumbscrew the handle may now be placed so as to stand at right angles with the length of the brush, or parallel therewith, or. at any intermediate angle, as desired, and there fastened by a slight turn of the screw, thus adapting it to use more conveniently along the sides of a room.

It will be observed that, on account of the base of the plate a not being at right angles with the cone of which it is a frustum, the plane of revolution of the socket containing the handle is not parallel with the surface of the brush, but at an acute angle thereto. This is for the purpose of adjusting the angle which the handle forms with the surface of the brush, the handle when standing over the higher side of the plate a forming an obtuse angle with the surface of the brush, and being then in a suitable position for use upon the floor, and, when standing over the lower or thin side of the plate, forming a more acute angle, and being in a suitable position for use upon the baseboards, or the upper parts of door or window casings.

When it is desirable to use the brush without any handle, the handle may be removed by turning the screw out of the plate. It will then remain fastened in the socket c. The plate, having no rough projections, is not in the way, and will not hurt the hand in using the brush.

I claim as my invention The combination and arrangement of the conical plate a, socket c, and thumb-screw s, for the purpose of attaching a handle to a scrubbingbrush, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
