` 'enorn Application fil ed November 21,V 1924.'- Serial No. 751,357.
To aZZ 'witam it 'mag/1 concert.: r
Be it known that I, RoY WArrT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Healy, sin
the county of Lane and State of Kansas, have invented new j and useful Improve-`V the following.
ments in Chutes, of which is a specification.
This invention relates to a device fora holding a cow to enable ,thev cow -to Idea` horned, the general` object of. theinvention parts, to be hereinafter fully 'described, il-;
lustrated in the accompanyingv drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich J Figure, 1v is a front view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side view.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.`
Figure 4 isl a detail sectional view.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5 -5 of Figure 2.
In these views, 1 indicates a stall into which the cow to be dehorned is driven, the front of the'stall being provided with a hinged lower door 2 and al vertically movable upper 'door 3. The door 8 is adapted to be actuatedby means of a hand lever 4 pivoted at one end to a part of' the stall and connected by a pin and slot connection 5 to the door. A counter lweight 6 is connected With the lever by means of .a .cable A 7 which passes over a pulley 8 on a part of the stall. The abutting ends of the two doors are provided with V-shaped recesses 9 which when the doors are'closed forms a diamond-shaped opening for receiving the neck of the cow. A spring 10 is adapted to open .the lower door 2`and this'door is kept closed by means of a latch 11 which is adapted to be moved to releasing position by means of a pedal 12, the vlever 13 and the rod 1a which is pivoted to the lever and which engages the latch so that when the pedal is depressed the rod is forced up-- be eas'ily carried wardly by thelever and thus `moves the latch to releasing position. A trough v15 has one end pivoted to the lower door immediately under the recess therein7 as shown at 15' so asl to receive the.cows head and this trough can be adjusted from af; horizontal position to an inclined position and'l p vice. versa by means of a hand, leverV 16 which is pivotedto a bracket 17 and-which I has 'itspawl' 18 engaging a toothedv sector l9 which isv formed on a bracket 20, .theV brackets 17 and 20 being vsupportedon .theV lower door. s A'brace 20'` is provided for'the.V bracket 20, the upper end of this brace be.-`
ing fastened to the' door. Links 21 connect the lever with the trough. A pair ofV loops :22 is carried by the'trough7 one end of each loop being pivotally connected with one side of the trough and the other end being adjustably connected with the other side of the 'trough by means of a bracket 23 and av spring plunger l23' for engaging any one of a number of notches 2d in the loop.V By forcing the notched end of` the loop into the bracket a notchftherein will be engaged by the plunger 23' to automatically lock the loop in closed position.
The upper door is first raised and then the animal driven into the stall until it door. The upper door is then lowered by means of the lever so as'to seize thel neclrv of the animalV by the walls of the opening 59. The animalls head is then pressed down into'the trough and the loops put in place,V 'one over its neck and the other over its nose so that the animalls head is held in flattened condition in the trough. The trough is thenlowered on its hinge so as tov place the animaPs head in the most favor' able position where its horns can be operated upon by the dehorning tool. After the animal has been dehorned the upper door is raised and the latch 11 of the lower doorI raised by means of the pedal 12 and its connections so that the lower door will swing open and thus permit the animal to pass from the stall.V Then the lower door` I is swung closed so that another animal can be operated upon.` .V
It is thought from the foregoing descrip- V Vtion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire itto be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several lie parts, provided that such changes fall With;V i
inv the seope of the appended claims.
What I olaim is thereof, the abutting ends of the doors having` recesses therein for forming an opening to receive the neck of an animal When theV doors are closed, a trough hinged to the lower door under the opening for receiving the head of the animal, means for adjusting the'trough and means for holding the head of the animal in the trough.
2; An apparatus of the class described comprising a stall, a hinged lower door and a vertically movable upper door at one end thereof, the abutting ends of the doors having reoesses therein forv formng an opening to receive the neek of an animal When the doors are closed, a trough hinged to the lovver door under the openlng for receiving :iaseasaV the head of the animal, means for adjusting the trough, means for holding the head of the animal lin the trough, such means compl'sng loops carried by the trough.
` 3. An apparatus of the class described comprising a stall, Va hinged door and a vertically movable door closing one end thereof, the abutting ends of` the doors having recesses therein for forming an opening to receive the neck of an animal When the door is closed, a hand lever for moving` the upper door vertically, a latch'for holding the lovver door closed, a spring for opening,` the lower door, manually operatedmeans for raising` the latch, a trough hinged tothe lower door p underV the opening, Inanually 'operated meansu for adjusting the trough, loops each i having one endl pvoted to the trongh and W means engaging the other e'nds of thel loops o for holding them in closed position.V I
In testimony whereof I affiix 'my signature. i BOY' WATT.
