IBURWELL M. DAVIS, F MOUNT ULLA, NORTH CAROLINA.
SHADE-ROLLER AND CURTAIN-POLE SUPPORT.
AppIication filed March 1, 1924. Serial No. ceases.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURWELL M". DAvis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Ulla, in the county of Rowan and State of, North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shade-Roller and Curtain-Pole Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined shade roller and curtain supports and has for an object the provision of means which is adjustable to the width of a window frame whereby shade rollers and curtain poles may be conveniently supported. the support being capable of adjustment vertically upon the frame to provide for proper ventilation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of. novel means for adjusting the device whereby the support may be regulated for application to windows of various widths, the adjusting means providing for securing the support in clamping engagement uponthe frame.
Another-object of; the invention is the provision of supporting means, as above stated which may be used in connection with either single or mullion windows means being provided for supporting the adjacent ends of the shade rollerswhen the device is appliedto a double or'mullion window.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shade roller support which includes means for gripping the roller opera-ting 'cord; whereby the shade roller may be conveniently rotated and the shade held in adjusted position.
A: further object of the invention is the provision of means included in the shade roller and pole supporting means by which drapery or valance may be conveniently supported.
' lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details ofv construction. to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated. in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings r igure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing the upper. portionof a mullion window with the invention applied, the full lines showing the invention arranged to provide for ventilation and the dotted lines an upper position of the device.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional View.
Figure 3 is an enlarged elevation of one end of the support.
Figure 4 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 5 is an enlarged elevation of the 0 opposite end of the support.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of the subject matter of Figure Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary elevation partly in section and showing the adjusting means.
Figure 8 is a detail elevation of the intermediate support. I
Figure 9 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 10 is a face view of a detachablecoryd holder and guide.
Figure 11 is a section on tl e line ll-dl. of A igure 10.
Figure 12 is a fragmentary view of one end of a curtain roller showing the manner 7 5 of winding the cord.
Beferringto the drawings in detail where in like characters of'reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to a window frame indicated at 15 and shown as a double or mullion window. it being obvious that the invention is equally well adapted for. use upon. asingle window.
T) e invention comprises attaching members 16 and 17. These members comprise plates 18 and 1.9 respectively whosev outer ends are provided with right angled flanges 20 li'or engagement over the outer edges of thewindow frame These flanges carry penetrating points or projections 21, which are adapted to be forced intouthe frame 15.
The opposite or inner ends of, the plates are each provided.- with extensions 22, the extension 22 of the plate 19, having slidingly r ioun ted thereon an adjusting bar 23. The bar 23 is longitudinally slotted as shown at Qdandsecured. to. the extension of the plate 19 is a longitudinally extending'guide and supporting member 25 which extends through the slot 24 and which has secured thereon a retaining plate 26. The plate 26 has its opposite ends secured to the member 25.. as shown at 2'? and its intermediate portion is offset and pivotally mountedbetween this intermediate portion and the slick- 23 as shown a-t 28, is a lever 29. This lever carries dogs 30 which are pivotally secured thereto as shown at 31 and which are adapted to engage teeth 32 provided along the opposite side edges of 110 the bar 23, the dogs 30 being so constructed and mounted as to have a gravity engageioo ment with the teeth. The outer end of the bar 23 and the extensionQZ of the plate 18 has secured thereto as shown at 33, the opposite ends of a connecting wire or cable 34 which may be of any suitable length according to the type of window for which the device is intended. By placing the plates 18 over the side edges of the window frame so that the penetrating points 21 engage the said side edges, the connection between the plates 18 and 19 may be adjusted through the opera'on of the lever 29 'so as to force the points 21 into'engagement with the window frame and securely hold the plates in position.
Slidingly mounted upon the plates 18 and 19 are shade roller brackets 35. These brackets are substantially L-shaped and have one of their arms movable in guides 36 car ried by the plates 18 and 19 and being held against accidental movement by means of set screws which pass through slots provided in the saidarms and which are car ried by the plates. The other arms of the plates have openings or notches for the reception of the trunnions of a shade roller 38.
The brackets are intended for use with spring shade rollers and in order to adapt the brackets for supporting manually rotated rollers or rollers not of the spring variety there is provided removable brackets 38 which are equipped with opposed inwardly extending flanges defining guide grooves 39 for receiving the outwardly extending arms of the brackets 35. Extending from the brackets 38 are apertured lugs 40 for receiving the trunnions of a shade roller 41. The roller 41 is reduced at one end as shown at 42 andwound upon this reduced end is one end of a cord or cable 43, the latter extending downward through a guide arm or channel 44 depending from the detachable roller bracket. Rotatably mounted in this guide channel is a roller 45 while spaced from this roller is a pivotally mounted dog 46 whose free end is provided with teeth 47 for biting engagement with the cord or cable 43. This cord is so wound upon the roller that when pulled it will unwind, the direct-ion of rotation acting to raise the shade. When released, the shade will move downward by gravity, unwinding from the roller but winding the cord 43 thereon. By moving the cord outward as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 11, the teeth of the dog 46 will bite into the cord and the cord will carry the dog upward so as to be wedged between the free end of the dog 46 and the bottom wall of the guide channel 44. The shade will thus be held in adjusted position. A slight pull on the cord 43 will release the dog and permit the same to drop by gravity'so that free movement of the cord through the channel may be effected- I Extending from the plates 18 and 19 are spaced spring arms 48 which are provided with opposed seats 49 for removable engagement with a curtain pole 50, the curtain being shown at 51. I v
A. drapery or valance 52 may be supported over the pole and for this purpose the plates 18 and 19 are provided with outwardly extending hooks 53 for removable engagement with the opposite ends of coiled springs 54 over which the upper end of the drapery is secured. This provides an extensible and taut support for the drapery and one which may be readily attached or removed.
In using the invention on a mullion window as shown in Figure 1 means must be nrovided for supporting the adjacent ends of the shade rollers and for this purpose there is provided an intermediate supporting member or plate 55 having spaced shade roller brackets 56 extending therefrom. This plate 55 carries outwardly extending hooks or lugs 57 for engagement over the connecting cable 34 and is supported there by, while hooks 53 also extend from the plate for engagement with the ends of the drapery supporting springs 54.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A combined shade roller and curtain pole support comprising frame engaging plates, a longitudinally slotted toothed slide adjustable upon one of said plates, a combined guide and lever support secured to the last mentioned plate and extending through the slot of the slide, a central oft-set plate having its ends secured to the support and overlapping the slide to hold the latter in position, a lever pivotally mounted between the guide and plate, dogs carried by the lever and engaging the toothed slide to adjust the latter and means connecting the slide and the other plate.
In testimony whereof l atlix my signature.
BURWELL M. DAVIS.
