Beit known that I, Guiones SurrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at lChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cars and Unloaders, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in cars and unloadei's and is here shown as embodied in apparatus especially adapted for use in mining.
For example, in the method of mining where a continuous loading machine is operated in a room at the tace, and material is carried from the loading machine to the room entry or stub entry by means of a shuttle car, my improved car may constitute such a shuttle car. The unloader, forming a part ofmy invention, may then be placed at the room or stub 4entry and unload the shuttle carinto the regular mine cars operating in the cross entry. My improved car and unloader are especially adapted for such use, because the car may be built very low and yet carry` a relatively large load of material. The unloader is also adapted to unload it quickly so that it may make another trip with very little delay.
My improved apparatus may be easily and ycheaply built, will be 'found to be strong and durable, and rapid and elipieient in operation. Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the car and unloader, showing the car being unloaded, Fig. 2 is a similar view in top plan, Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section ofthe car, Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the car, and Fig. 5 is a similar view in side elevation. Fig. (5 is a detail view of the latch mechanism for controlling the dumping of the car. V

15 indicates a substantially rectangular bottomless removable body resting on the horizontal flanges of the angle irons 13 on the platform 10 and lying between the angle irons 14. The body 15 `is adapted tor longitudinal slidingL movement between theanglo` irons la, 14; as will be described more in detail hereinafter. The body 15 has no bottom but when the same is in place on the platform 10, such platform 1() acts" as a bottom for thevbody 'so that a `load will be retained therein.
In Fig. 1 is shown the unloader adapted to unload the car. In generahthis unloader comprises an inclined slide with a hole near the :upper end. The car platform is of such a height that it will be iush with the lower end of the inclined slidereferred to and a short piece of inclined track is provided for the ear to run up onto sothat when the forward end of the platform engagesithe lower end of the slide, the platfoi'm'of the car and the slide will be in substantial'alignment. lVhen in this position, the removable body 15 of the car is slid off of the ear platform up the slide, carrying the load witli'it, until it comes to the hole in the slide near the top thereof. Upon reaching this hole, the material in the bottomless body falls through such hole into any desired receptacle underneath. I will now describe this construction y and operation more in detail.
The unloader shown in Fig. 1 comprises an inclined slide 16 having at its side edges a pair of angle irons 17 ,y 17 separated the same distance asthe angle irons 111 on the car platform. 118, 118 indicates a pair of in clined rails having their lower ends beveled and resting on the rails 12 so that the car wheels 11 can be drawn up onto the rails 118. When the car is thusrun up onto the rails `118, the forward ends of the angle irons lil `engage the lower ends of the yangle irons 17 so that the angle irons 17 will form a pair of guides constitutingja continuation of the guides on the car platform in which the body 15 may slide. Then the carv wheels 11 are uponthe railsv 118 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the earplatform `1() is also in alignment with and even withthe slide 16. 18'indicates `a square hole inthe 1slide 16 near the upper end thereof. In the dumping operation, the car is pulled up onto the rails 118 until the front end of the latform 10 engages the lower end lofthe slide 16. The car body 15 is then pulled off of the platform 1,0 onvthe guides let and up along the slide 16 Vbetween the guides 17 until the hole 18 is reached and the contents discharged therethrough into any suitable receptacle below, such as a mine car 19.
F or the purpose of moving the car and drawing the body 15 up the slide 16, a cable 20 is attached to an eye 21 in the rear end of the body 15. This cable is an endless cable which passes from the eye 21 around a suitable pulley (notshown') in the track at the end of the travel of the car and ythen returns along the track to the unloader where it is wound about a drum 22 and then passes around a pulley 23 at the upper end of the slide 16, beyond the discharge opening 18. After passing around this pulley it returns to the eye 21. The drum 22 is adapted to be driven in any convenient manner such as, for eXample, by a reversible motor 24. At the front end of the platform 10 there is provided a latch 25 adapted to engage the front edge ofthe front wall of the body 15 in order to hold 'the same on the platform when the cable 20 is used for moving thecar. As the car goes up the inclinedl rails 118, `however,y the lower end 26 of the latch 25 is engaged by a kicker 27 on the lower end of the slide 16 in order toflower the latch 25 and permit the body 15 to be drawn ofi of the platform of the car and up the slidev 16. The car is adapted to be held on the inclined rails 118 lby `means of a stop or horn 28 so that it will remain in place at the lower end of the slide whilethe body is taken up the slide for the dumping 'and then drawn downthe slide again backonto the car platform. After the `body is again in place, the horn`28 is released to permit the car to gov away. A't the rear end of the platform 10 there isprovided a pair of stops 29 to prevent the car body 15 from being drawn backtoo far.
The operation is as follows. Assuming `that the car body is-in place on the platform and filledwith material, the drum 22 is operated in order to -draw the car toward the unloader. The pull istransmitted by the cable 2O to the eye fastened in the body 15. The latchw25h-preventsthe Vbody from being drawn off of the platform, and

The movement of the cable 2() is then reversed so that the body 15 is drawn down the slide back on to the platform 10 until itV goes againstthe stops 29, 29. The horn or stop 28 is then released so that the car may be drawn back to the other end of its travel to receive a new load of materiah Vhile I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to belunderstood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be'ma'de without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior art. v
that I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising; a car having a platform with a bottomless body thereon; a slide having one end substantially on a level with the car platform and provided with amdischarge opening; and means for drawing the car body ott' of the car platform onto said slide and over said discharge opening.
2. Apparatus of the character described comprising; a car having a platform with a bottomless body thereon; an inclined slide having one end substantially on a level with the car platform and provided with a dislcharge opening; and means for drawing the car body off of the car platform onto said yslide and over said discharge opening.

7 Apparatus of the character described comprising; a car having a platform with a bottoinless body thereon; a car unloader having a slide with one end substantially on a level with said car platform and provided with a discharge opening therein; and means on the car unloader for drawing the car up to said slide and for pulling the body thereof ott of said platform onto said slide to a position over the discharge opening therein.
