REEL.
Application filed august 18, 1324.
Be it known that l, Enix Monn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a speci Vication.
This invention relates to reels adapted for winding rope, twine, cord, line or the like and is particularly intended for use in connection with clothes lines. Clothes lines are usually wound in hanks for selling and the user after unwinding the hank commonly winds the rope or line up in a hall or in a roll and in doing so the line is usually twisted until it becomes full of kinks and in some cases the twisting action takes the twist or lay out of a twisted rope so that the strands are more or less parallel and the rope is thereby more or less injured.
My invention provides a combined holder and reel which serves as a means for holding or supporting the rope in attractive position for selling or merchandising and also provides means whereby the rope will be better preserved and is more. readily handled when it is put in use.
The objects of this invention are to provide an improved reel for rope, twine or the like; to provide a reel which will be light, strong' and simple in construction and which may be manufactured at a low cost; to provide a reel of this character which will be durable and eliicient in operation and also which will be attractive in order to provide a holder which will assist in merchandising clothes lines or other similar lines; and in general to provide such an improved device as will be described more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating` this invention,
Figure l is a side view of a reel or holder showing` a portion of the line wound thereon; and
Figure 2 is an end view of the same.
In the particular forni of th@ invention as illustrated in these drawings, the reel comprises a frame or holding portion 3 which is provided with suitable handles el and 5 whereby it may be supported in one hand of the operator and turned by the other hand. rlhe holder or frame portion 3 is preferably made flat so that it will occupy but little space and in the present instance is shown as made of wire bent to forni sides 6 6 and ends 7 7 which are con- Seral No. 732,770.
nected by loops 8 8. These loops form the flanges or rope retaining` side portions of the reel. This frame member or holder may be made of a single piece of wire or for convenience in construction it may be made of two pieces with the abutting` ends welded or fastened together.
The handles l and 5 are carried on a rod or wire 9. One end of this wire projects at right angles to the frame in the center thereof to receive the handle l and the wire is then bent and carried up to a point adjacent to' one end of the frame where it projects at right angles thereto to receive. the handle 5. lhis rod or wire is secured to the frame portion 3 by welding, brazing or in any other suitable manner. The rope or clothes line l0 is secured to the rod 9 by a clipY ll and is wound over the end pieces 7 until a suicient amount is reeled thereon. When a close line, for instance. has been wound on the reel it presents a particularly neat and attractive appearance and if desired the end of the line may be provided with a loop which will be exposed on the face of the coil so that the purchaser will see that the end of the line may be fastened to a hook or nail without having to be tied. Furthermore, l prefer to have the frame or reel painted or enainelled in attractive colors thereby forming a colored itrarne around the reeled line which further adds to the appearance of the device and assists in inerchandising such lines. W' hen the line is to be unreeled, the operator fastens the free end to a hook, nail or the like and by holding on the handle 4 the reel will readily rotate to pay off the line. When the line is to be again wound up-` the operator holds the handle l, for instance, in the left hand which serves as a bearing and the handle 5 then serves as a crank handle for turning,` the reel.
It will of course be apparent that the device may be made in various sizes and shapes for displaying and reeling different lOt kinds of lines, rope, cord or the like without departing` from the scope of my invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact forni herein shown and describech except as specified in the following claims in which l claim:
l. A reel comprising a rectangular frame with sides 6 6 and ends 7 7 connected by integrally formed anges 8, a wire 9 secured to the frame and having one end projecting from the frame in the center thereof and the other end projectingv frointhe other side of the frame at a distance from the center and rotatable handles secured to said projecting ends. i
2. A reel con'iprisinw' a tranne *termed of Wire with projections at the corners for retaininga line tohe reeled thereon, a Wire arranged diagonalljxY with respect to the frame and having one end projecting at the center of the traine and the other end at a distance from the center and rotatable handles secured to the projecting ends.
A ipbefiee 3. ln a device of the character set forth, the combination of a reel comprising a [lat traine formed of Wire having depressions in the end thereof fer receiving the rope to he recled thereon. a cross piece secured to said traine and having its ends projecting at either side oill the traine` handles secured to said ends and a rope Ahaving one end` secured to said cross piece and being adapted to he reeled upon the frame7 sub stantially as described.
