FRANK CLEMENS, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-BODIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,861, dated O;tober 13, 1874 application filed August 1, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CLEMENS, of La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shifting Wagon-Bed, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of myimproved wagon-bed, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig.2 is an end viewofthe same, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section of one corner of the same, taken through theline w m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved wagon-bed, simple in construction,
strong and durable, and convenientiu use, being so constructed that it may be readily and quickly taken apart and put together. The invention consists in the com bination ofthe straphooks and the eyebolts with the side boards and the ends of the cross-bars attached to the bottom-boards in the combination of the braces and hand-screws with the side boards, and the bars attached to the ends of the middlecrossbars; and in the combination of the eye-straps, and the rods with the end boards, the side boards, and the bottom boards, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the bottom boards, to the under sides of which are attached four cross-bars, B. 0 are the side boards, to the outer sides of which are attached four strap-hooks, D, in such positions as to hook into the eyes of the eyebolt E attached to the ends of the crossbars B. The ends of the two middle crossbars B project, and to them are attached the ends of the short bars F, which serve as a platform to the wagon-bed. G are braces, the lower ends of which are bent inward, and are bolted to the step-bars F-near one end. The braces G incline inward, and their upper ends rest against the side boards 0 near their upper edges, where they are secured in place by hand-screws H. I are the end boards, which rest against cleats J, attached to the side boards 0, near theirends.
If desired, the cleats J may be attached to the side boards 0 at their ends, and may have shoulders formed upon them along their inner edges, against which the end boards I rest, as shown in Fig. 3.
To the outer sides of the end boards I, near their ends, are attached metallic straps K, the upper and lower ends of which are bent outward, and have holes formed through them to receive the rods L. To the inner side of the ends of the side boards 0 are attached metallic straps M, the upper ends of which are bent outward, to overlap the upper ends of the straps K, and have holes formed through them to receive the rods L. The lower ends of the rods Lenter holes in the bottom boards A, and thus lock the side boards, end boards, and bottom boards securely together.
By this construction, by removing the rod Lfrom either end of either end board, the end board can be swung out upon the rod L as a hinge, and, by removing all the rods L and the hand-screws H, the whole bed can be taken apart.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the braces G and hand-screws H with the side boards 0 and the bars F attached to the ends of the middle cross-bars B, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the eye-straps K and M and the rods L with the end boards I, the side boards 0, and the bottom boards A, substantially as shown and described.
FRANK CLEMENS.
