Be it known that I, 'JAMES Gr. BAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in .Valves for Radiators, of which the following is a specication.
The object-of this invention is to provide a valve for modulated vapor of vacuum heating, one which may be correctly adjusted and which shall be maintained in good condition without the necessity of packing the valve from time to time.
A further object is to provide, for cooperation with the valve per se, an element having a plurality of ports of different sizes, this element being set at the point for placing in service that port designed for use when a predetermined extent of radiating surface is employed.'
A further object is to provide an element of the type specified having ports of different sizes, a valve member for cooperation with said element, and means for determining the exact extent of rotation of the valve 'member so that it may be opened to the full extent required for a given degree of radiating surface, or may-be rotated through a specified angle, depending upon the degree of heat desired.
lith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modiiications may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.V
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the device in vertical section; Figure 2 is a top plan view; Figure 3 is a view in elevation of the sleeve provided with outlet ports of different sizes; Figure 4 is an elevation of the valve member; Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 3; Figure 6 shows the relative size 0f the ports of the sleeve ,f Figure 7 shows the top of the casing provided with notches for engagement by a lug on the sleeve of Figure 3, for retaining any port of the sleeve in registration with the outlet member ofthe casing.
The valve casing 10 is provided with threaded connections 12 and 13 and with a threaded portion 14 by means of which the cap 15 is secured.
Carried on element 15 is a plate 16 of annular form, graduated as shown in Figure 2.
Valve 18 is provided with an internally threaded bore 19 engaged by the threaded portion of valve stein 20. Secured to the element last` named is an annular ymember 21 constituting a cover, and a threaded element effecting rigid connection between the cover and valve stem. A shank portion 23 1s formed on element 21, and a handle 24 is carried by the shank, and permits the setting e of the valve 18 in the exact position desired. A pointer 25 cooperates with the graduations on plate 16, and movementfrom open v39 is three-fourths of an inch in diameter.l
The sleeve is set with the port 36 in vregvistration with the bore of the valve casing, when the extent of radiating surface to be providedA for is from iifteen square `feet to sixty square feet, but if the radiating surface is from about 105 square feet to 200 square feet, then the sleeve is set so that port 39 will register with opening or bore 40 of the valve casing. It will be understood that the intermediate ports provide for radiation surface varyingin extent between the limits specified. In order to maintain the sleeve in the exact position desired, so that a given port will be exactly centered, I provide a lug 35 adapted to register with any of the recesses 352 inthe valve casing. The washer 43 is notched at one point (not shown), for the lug 35 so that the lug may project below the washer.
A coiled spring 47 surrounds the valve stem and is interposed between nut 48 and the flange 49 of element 35.
The sleeve 35 is provided with inner vertical channels 50 and 51, and the radial members 52 of valve mem-ber 18 move vertically in the channels when the valve .is shifted by the rotation of the stem.
.i-lssuming` that the sleeve 35 has been properly set and the handle 2% turned so that pointer is at the closed position, indicate-d by the word shut on plate 1G of Figure 2, the handle is to be rotated counter-clockwise to open the. valve. Then the pointer is opposite graduation G1 -the valve is one-quarter open regardless of the particular port of the sleeve then in registration with bore i() ot the Casing.
.f n importantfeature otl the valve is the disk or Washer 66 between the internal liange i9 on the sleeve and the external flange 6? on the stem. This Washer keeps the valve in fluid tight condition without renewal except at long intervals.
Havingl thus descril ed the invention, l claim:
l.. In device ot the class described, a valve casing including an inlet member and an outlet member, a. sleeve mounted in the casing, in vertical alinement ivith the inlet member, a valve member within the sleeve and including a tubular element, a stem threaded into said tubular element for reciprocating the valve member, said sleeve having circumterentially arranged ports ot different sizes, the easing being grooved verv tically at points having predetermined relation to the ports, means adapted to enter any oi the grooves for retaining the sleeve in position lor centering any port thereof in alinement with the outlet member, and guiding means between the valve member and the sleeve.
2. In a device ot the class described, a valve casing including an inlet member and an outlet member, a sleeve Within the casing,
the bore of the sleeve having communication vvith 4the inlet member, said sleeve being provided with a plurality of circumferentially arranged ports of different sizes, any one olf which is adapted to register with the outlet member, the casing being grooved vertically at spaced intervals, an element on the sleeve for engaging the Walls of any of the grooves, to hold the sleeve in position for registry of one of its ports with the outlet member, a valve within the sleeve and nonrotat-able With reference thereto, rotatable means 'For moving the` valve longitudinally el the sleeve, and a device for showing the extent of rotation.
il. ln a device of the class described, a valve casing including inlet and outlet ports, a rotatable flanged sleeve having ports therein, said sleeve being mounted in the easing, and one ot the ports of the sleeve registering with the outlet port of the casing at a given time to theI exclusion ot' the other ports ot the sleeve, the casing being grooved 'vertically at spaced intervals, an element on the sleeve 'for engaging` theivalls of any of the `grooves to hold the sleeve in position for registry o't one of its ports with the outlet port, a valve and means for guiding the valve in the sleeve, said valve being adapted to permit Huid to pass into one end of the sleeve and out through one ot' its ports and through the. casing, valve operating means including a flanged stem threaded into the valve, a Washer positioned between the flanged portion ot the. stem and the sleeve, and an adjustably mounted spring bearing on the flanged portion of the sleeve and. on the side opposite to that engaged by the Washer, and tendingto move said llanged stem outwardly.
