i UNITED STATES i CHARLES w.' HILL, vorrowiun1. lwrogiyriive. i
WRENCH.
Application filed April 30, 1924. Serial No. 710,065.
T0 all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Huma citizen of the United States, residing at Powell, in the county of Park, State of IVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches.
One object of the invention is to provide a wrench wherein the sliding` jaw is automatically forced against the work upon the proper working movement of the wrench.
Another object is .to provide a wrench wherein the movable jaw is capable of coarser adjustment toward the work, and wherein the finer a-djustment is automatic v upon the active operation of the wrench.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench made in accordance with the present invention; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the sliding jaw, showing the action of the lock, the shank of the wrench being in elevation.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the shank of the wrench which is formed with the outei' fixed jaw 11, provided with the teeth 12 on its operating face, and with the teeth 13 on the edge face of the shank. Slidable on the shank is a block 14, which has the two loops 15 and 16 disposed in embracing .relation to the shank, the loop 16 being slightly longer than the loop 15, whereby to permit vertical rocking movement of the block toward and away from the shank. In the lower face of, the block 14, directly above the toothed edge of the shank, there is formed a recess 17, the forward end wall 18 yof which inclines toward the operating face of the block, and in the direction of the toothed face of the shank. Disposed within this recess is a block 19, having its lower face formed with teeth 2O for interlocking engagement with the teeth of the shank, and having its forward end beveled or inclined,
as shown at 21, for sliding engagement with the inclined wall 18 of the recess. A coil spring 22 is secured, at one end, in the upper operator grasping the opposite sides of the' block 19, said block may be moved upwardly in the recess 17, until the teeth are free from the teeth of the shank, thereby permitting thel movement of the block 14 along. theshank, in a direction away. from the fixed jaw.
In the operation of the wrench the jaws are positioned on opposite sides of the work, the movable jaw block 14 being moved up until itsworking face engages with the work. The inclined face of the block 19 will beengaged with the inclined face or wall 18, of the recess 17, so that when the operator grasps the handle portion of the shank and moves same in the actof rotating the work, the forward end portion of the block 14 will be forced inwardly toward the shank of the wrench, and upon such movement the'inclined wall 18 will slide on the inclined face 21, withthe result that the block 14 will move forwardly into firmly gripping engagement with the work. The teeth of the block 19, being firmly interlocked in the teeth of the shank, the said` block will be held' against movement longi-` tudinally of the shank, whereby the forwardY y movement of the sliding jaw is assured.
By this construction the coarser a-djust-.
ment of the sliding jaw is accomplished by" iio toward the shank and longitudinally ef the fixed jaw, and a toothed block having an inclined face for sliding movement in said recess and along said inclined end Wall, whereby the slidable jaw is simultaneously forced toward the shank and in closer proximity to the fixed jaw to enable the Work to he more firmly gripped upon operative movement of the Wrench with respect to the Work.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature. v
rjiHARLEs W. HILL.
