Unirse sraras Partnr titi l @i E NELS J. ANDERSON, OF OWEN, WISCONSIN.
DOORI-IOLDING DEVICE.
Application led Oct-ober 22, 1923, Serial No. 670,205.
To u?! whom if in ay/ concern Be it known that l, Niets J. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owen, inthe county of Clark and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Inn provements in Dooiwflolding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door securing or holding devices, and has for its object the provision of novel means for maintaining a door in open position so that it cannot swing or blow shut accidentally.
An important and more specific object is the provision of adevice of this character which is mounted at the upper part of a door and door frame so as to be out of the way of persons using the door way, the device being furthermore so constructed that the door may be held in partly or entirely open position depending upon preference.
Another object is the provision of a release mechanism which will operate to permit the door to be closed by disengaging the holding means.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view looking at the door showing it in closed position,
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the door frame showing an elevation of the door in open position,
Figure 3 is a similar view showing only the upper portion of the door and showing the holding member released to permit the door to close,
Figure 4 is a horizontal section through the door frame showing a plan view of the device, 1
Figure 5 is a detail section on the line .fi-5 of Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the letter A designates a door frame and B represents a door hingedly mounted therein in the ordinary manner. Ordinarily, doors are provided with latch means for holding them closed but there is nothing provided for holding them in open position and they are therefore liable to swing shut orto be blown into closed position by a draft or sudden gust of wind. lll/lith this fact in view l have designed the present device which comprises a track 10 secured upon the door near its top. In actual practice this track may vary considerably in its detailed formation, though for the sake of illustration 1 have shown it as consisting of merely an elongated strip of metal bent into acute angular shape and provided at its ends with attaching feet 11 by means of which it may be fastened to the door. The end of the track nearest the hinged edge of the door is curved as shown at 12 and is also formed with a plurality of notches 13 which extend downwardly from the upper edge.
4Fivoted at 111 on the underside of the lintel of the door frame is an elongated latch member 15 formed from a suitable piece of strip of metal having a downturned end 16 bifurcated at 17 to define a fork which straddles and rides upon thetrack so as to engage within one of the notches 13 when the door is swung open, gravity being entirely sufficient to cause the keeper to enter a notch.
To release this holding means and to permit the door to be closed, I provide a lever 18 which is disposed against the outer face of the track 10 and which is so shaped as to conform to the configuration thereof. This lever is pivoted intermediate its ends as shown at 19 and has one end adapted to lift the forked ond of the keeper. The means for effecting the movement of the release lever is here represented as being a iiexible element 20 which is secured to the end of the lever nearest the free edge of the door and which may be equipped with a handle or whioh'may have its free end secured at 21 to the door so as to prevent it from dangling. The closed position of the door is shown in Figure 1 and it will be seen that when the door is swung into its open position the forked end of the' keeper straddling the track and the release lever will gravitationally drop into a notch and will consequently positively maintain the door in open position. When subsequent closing is desired, the operator pulls upon the flexible member 2O to swing the lever 18 and this lifts the keeper out of the notch engaged thereby so that ,the keeper travels -along the upper edgeof the lever 18 while the door is being closed,
From the foregoing description and a study ci the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple, inexpensive and easily installed device Which Will not be unsightly and Which will not be in the way and which will effect'ually operate to maintain a door in open position and prevent it from blowing or otherwise being shut. Owing to the simplicity of the construct-ien it is apparent that there is very little to get out of order so that the device should have a long life and satisfactorily perform all of its functions.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is oit course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes inthe torni,`
in its upper edge, and a latch pivote'd upon the door frame and having a down turned forked end straddlingly engaging and riding upon the upper edge of the track, and adapted to*` enter a selected one of the notches for holding the door in open posi.- tion;
2. In a door holding mechanisn'i, a track carriedby tlie'cloo1and formed With notches in its upper edge, a` latch pivoted upon the door and having a down turned forked end straddlingly engaging and riding upon the upper edge or' the track and adapted to enter a selected one of the notches for hold.- ing the door in open position, and a releasing lever pivotally mounted upon one side of the track and' having a shape conforming to the configuration thereof, said lever being likewise straddled by the forked end of the keeper and being movable to disengage the latch from the track'.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature.
NnLs- J. ANDERSON.
