Description

Oct. 13, 1925. 1,557,443 7 W. J. ELDER ET AL SANDING MECHANISM FOR MATCH BOXES Filed Sent. 16 1923 N QR Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM J. ELDER AND CHARLES N. MOREHOUSE, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO THE DIAMOND MATCH COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CCRPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
SANDING MECHANISM FOR MATCH BOXES.
Application filed September 16, 1923. Serial No. 662,916.
T 0 all wlzom it may concern:
Be it known that we, .VILLIAM J. ELDER and CHAnLns N. MoRnHoUsn, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanding Mechanism for Match Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanism for applying abrading material to the shucks or slides of match boxes in order to provide an exterior scratch surface for matches; having reference more particularly to machines whereby box shucks or slides are made and sanded, such, for example, as illustrated in LettersPatent of the United States No. 795,927 dated August 1, 1905.
The object of our invention is to provide mechanism of simple and eflicient construc tion and operation whereby sand or other abrading material is forcibly projected against and embedded in the glue-coated surface of a box member in such a manner as to ensure a permanent homogeneous scratch surface, as will be hereinafter 'described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan of a portion of a shuck making and sanding machine embodying the invention.
' Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a detail of the sanding device.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a horizontal bar of rectangular cross-section, constituting a mandrel upon which the box shucks or slides 6 are formed, which mandrel is rigidly supported on a suitable frame 7; 8 designates two positively driven feed-rolls by means of which the partially formed shucks are advanced along the mandrel; and 9 designates positively driven forming rolls which engage the advancing shucks and press them against the sides and the top and bottom of the mandrel in such a manner to the under surfaces of the consecutive blanks as they progress from the rolls. A pair of feedaolls 12 arranged in the rear of the glue-applying wheel engage each succeeding shuck and positively impel it rearward after the application of the glue to the shuck. Supported below the mandrel and rearward of the glue-containing tank is a sand receptacle 13 having means whereby the contents of the receptacle are applied to the glue-coated surfaces of the progressing shucks on the mandrel.
The parts above described, with the exception of the sand receptacle and its associated sand-applying means, may be of the construction described in said Patent No. 7 95,927.
As herein illustrated the sand-receptacle low the path of the glue-coated surfaces of the shucks on the mandrel, perforations for the passage of one or more upstanding tubes 15 which are supported at their lower ends on a suitable framework 16 extending from the main frame. These tubes, of which two are shown in the present instance, extend in proximity to the shucks on the mandrel, and they are provided adjacent the bottom of the receptacle with lateral openings 17 Extending into the lower ends of therespect'ive tubes, and below the openings 17, are upstanding nozzles 18 from the horizontal branch 19 of a pipe 20 leading to a suitable source of compressed air supply, such pipe being equipped with a suitably disposed regulating valve 21. By the construction just described it will be seen that when the hopper 13 is supplied with sand or other abrading material and the valve is opened, jets of air under pressure issue from the nozzles and toward the tops of the tubes, such air thus drawing sand from the hopper into the tubes through theopenings 17 and driving the entrained sand with great force through the upper ends of the-tubes and against the opposing glue-coated surfaces of the progressing shucks on the mandrel, which sand thus being embedded in and thoroughly incorporated with the glue produces, when the glue sets and dries, a permanent homogene ous scratch surface for matches. The surplus sand issuing from the tops of the tubes falls into the hopper.
\Ve claim- 1. In a bOX-SllLlCk sanding mechanism having a mandrel for box shucks, means for feeding shucks along the mandrel, and means for applying glue to the shucks, a receptacle for abrading material, and an air-blast device for forcibly driving the contents of the receptacle against the gluecoated surfaces of the shucks.
2.111 a boX-shuck sanding mechanism having a mandrel for box shucks, means for feeding shucks along the mandrel, and means for applying glue to the shucks, a
hopper for abrading material, an Lip-stand ing tube in said hopper having its upper discharging end located adjacent the path of the glue-coated surfaces of the shucks and having a lateral opening adjacent the bottom of the hopper, a nozzle extending into the lower portion of the tube, and means for supplying air under pressure to said nozzle.
Signed at Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, this 8th day of September A. 'D., 1923.
