W. RITCHIE VALVE GRINDING OUTFIT Filed June 12, 1922 fr gal 5 6 6 5 4 l I v 7 I I0 E IQ. i j
INVENTOR ATTORNEV Patented Oct. 13, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM RITCHIE, 01? PORT ORCHARD, WASHINGTON.
VALVE-GRINDING OUTFIT.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,549.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RrroHIE, a citizen of the United,States, residing at Port Orchard, county of Kitsap, and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Valve-Grinding Outfit; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention is a device for grinding motor vehicle valves which may be carried in a persons pocket and operated by hand.
The object of the invention is to provide a device, with a small case for holding it,
which may be placed on top of a valve, and which will cause the valve to rotate or raise, as it is rotated or raised.
With these ends in view the invention embodies a cylindrical shaped piece of material with one end of a smaller diameter than the other, a leather disk held on the larger end by two pins whose heads project beyond the disk and a case for holding the piece of material, which case will'also hold an abrasive powder.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein Figure l is a cross section through thecontainer.
Figure 2 is a plan view with the container removed.
Figure 3 is a view with part broken away showing the device as it would be used.
In the drawings I have shown my device as it would be carried in Figure 1, wherein numeral 1 indicates the cylindrical piece of material which has a large end 2 and a small end 3 forming a handle. A leather disk 4 is held to the large end by the pins 5, which have shoulders 6 on them, for holding the disk, while the outer ends of the pins project outward. This device is held in the container 7, which has a cap 8 on it, and in the lower end of which an abrasive powder 9 may be placed. A flat disk 10 with a hole in its center to fit tightly around the handle at the end 3 of the piece of material 1 may be inserted in the container to form a com partment in the bottom for holding the abrasive powder. This container may be made in any desired shape, or the upper end 3 of the piece of material 1 may he made in any desired shape, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The construction will be readily understood from the foregoing description. To use the device the piece of material 1 may be taken from the container in which it may he carried, and placed on top of the valve as shown in Figure 3, after the cylinder head casting has been removed and also the pin removed from the lower part of the valve stem. The leather disk should be thoroughly saturated with oil so that a thin film of oil will displace air between the disc and the top of the valve when a slight pressure is applied and this will make it possible to raise the valve through suction or adhesion by lifting the handle. A small amount of the abrasive powder, mixed with oil, will then be placed around the edge of the valve, and as the valve is lifted by means of the handle, this will work in between the beveled surface of the valve and the valve seat, then as the valve is rotated by twisting the device with the thumb and forefinger, as the pins on the end of the device fit into holes in the top of the valve, the valve will revolve and be ground to fit its seat.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a valve grinding device a cylindrical shaped piece of material with the upper portion of a somewhat smaller diameter than the lower portion, a fibrous disk at the end of the lower portion, and pins with washers, around them that project beyond the fibrous disk.
2. In a valve grinding device a cylindrical shaped piece of material with the upper portion of a somewhat smaller diameter than the lower portion, a fibrous disk at the end of the lower portion, and pins that project beyond the fibrous disk.
3. In a valve grinding device a cylindrical shaped piece of material with the upper porlower portion, a fibrous disk at the end of the lower portion, andpins with shoulders on them that are drive-n through the fibrous washer and into the cylindrical shaped piece of material for holding the fibrous disk and that are adaptable to engage openings in the upper sides of the valves.
WILLIAM RITCHIE.
