To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that SAMUEL amworth, dcceased, late a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Summerville, PennsyL vinia, in the county of Jefferson, did make a new and useful Invention in Switch Construction, of which the following is specification.
The invention relates to switch constructions of the type shown in the patent to Samuel Vallwork No. 1,423,703 of July 25, 1922, upon which the present invention constitutes an improvement. the construction being primarily designed for use in mine work to which it is particularly adapted. It has for its principal objects, the provision of improved means for supporting the switch point and for connecting the switch point to the switch rail, including an improved form of heel plate construction; and the provision of means for adding to the safety and security of the construction as set forth in said patent. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is an assembly plan view showing the relation of the switch to the track. Fig. 2 is a plan view on a larger scale of the switch point and associated parts. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line llili- UT of Fig. 2. Figs. 1 and 5 are end and side elevations respectively of the heel plate. And Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are transverse sections on the lines VIVI, VII VII and VIII VIII respectively of Fig. 2.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 and 2 are the main track rails, 3 and 4 are the rails of the switch which take off of the main track, 5 is the switch point, 6 and 7 are cross-over frogs, and 4? is a guard rail. The switch point swings about the pin 8, and is shown in closed position with the beveled end 9 of the tongue 10 lying over the top of the rail 2. The frog members 6 and 7 have their top surfaces flush with the top of the rail 2 and are provided with the upstanding ribs 11 and 12 which support the wheels of the cars in passing across the rail '2. The dotted lines on Fig. 1 indicate the location of the parts corresponding to 3, 1, 5, 6 and 7 whenv Serial No. 35,200.

The switch point and parts cooperating therewith, in which the invention particularly resides, will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 to 6. Extending along the side of the track rail is a bearing plate 13 having the downwardly turned flanges 14 and 1.5 along its side edg ,s. The inner side of the bearing plate lies against the web of the track rail between the head and flange (Fig. 6) and is clamped tightly in such relation by the hook bolts 16 and 17. Beneath the bearing plate and the track rails extend the wood ties 18, 19 and 20, the plate being secured to the ties by spikes 34 extending through suitable perforations in the plate.
The bearing plate acts as a support for the switch point 5, and the heel plate 21, and also acts as a tie or anchoring member for holding the end of the switch rail 4- securely in position, and fixing it relative to the main track rail 2. The switch point 5 comprises a central tongue 22 with flanges 23, 23 on the outer sides thereof to provide the grooves 24, 24 for the wheel flanges. The inner flange 23 of the switch point lies in. alignment with the head of the guard rail 1. The switch point is pivoted at its rear end to the heel plate 21 and hearing plate 13 by means of the pin 8 heretofore referred to, and is supported on the bearing plate forward of the pin by means of the block 25 secured to the tongue 22 by means of the rivet 26. The beveled end 9 of the tongue is spaced above the bearing plate (Fig. 3) and is adapted to lie over the top of the track rail when the switch point is in closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The heel plate 21 preferably comprises a steel casting or forging having the upstandingrib 27 in alignment with the tongue 22 of the switch point, and bridging the space between the end of such tongue 22 and the end of the switch rail 4. This rib 27 is also provided with a pair of lateral perforations, one of which receives the end of the hook bolt 28, and the other of which receives the bolt 29 which secures one end of the splice bar 30. The hook bolt has its end turned down (Fig. '8) past the edge of the heel plate between the lugs 31, 31. The bolt also extends through the web of the guard rail i. The inner end of the bolt is pro-- vided with a nut and between the flange of the guard rail and the rib 27 is a block (integral with the heel plate), which acts a spacer. A similar block 33 is provided on the other side of said'rih, and in fact the two halves of the heel plate are duplicates, so that the same heel plate can be used when it is shifted to the other side of the track as indicated in dotted lines in F 1. The hook bars in conjunction with the blocks 83 serve to secure the guard rail P in proper relation to the tongue. 27 and to the switch rail 4. The guard rail and switch ail t are spiked down to ties (not shown) in the usual way. For heavyduty work, the channel bearing plate 18 may be filled in with planking, thus preventing the channel from cutting into the ties.
The switch is especially adapted for mine work, as it is readily put together and taken apart by unskilled labor and can be readily shifted with a minimum amount of labor. Few spikes are required and the hook bolts are very easily removed and applied and no drilling of the rail 2 is required because of the hook bolts, as they pass beneath the base of the rail, instead of through the web. The bearing plate 13 positively fixes the relative position of the switch with respect to the rail and gives a very rigid support for the switch. The heel plate 21, switch point 5, and bearing plate 13 are all made reversible, so that they may be used on either side of the track, reducing the number of parts necessary to carry in stock and simplifying the maintenance requirements. The heel plate gives additional bearing support for the pivot 8 and strengthens the constru1=- tion at its otherwise weakest point, serving as a secure ai'ichoring member between the switch point 5, the switch rail 4 and the guard rail l, all of such members being very securely supported at their ends upon the heel plate. This plate is preferably se cured to the bearing plate by a pair of bolts 35, thus supplementing the'connection afforded by the pivot pin 8.
hat I claim is:
1. The combination with a main line track rail, of a. switch point device comprising a bearing plate extending along the side of the rail with its upper surface spaced below the level of the top of said rail, means for clamping said plate against the side of the rail, a. heel plate rigidly secured upon one end of the bearing plate, a switch point mounted for swinging movement on the bearing plate and comprising a tongue having its forward end beveledand adapted to lie over the top of said rail when thepoint is in closed position and having a guard flange on the inner side of the tongue, and a switch rail having its end secured to the heel plate in alignment with said tongue.
2. The combination with a main line track rail, of a switch point device comprising a bearing plate extending along the side of the rail with its upper surface spaced below the level of the top of said rail, means for clamping said plate against the side of the rail, a heel plate rigidly secured upon one end of the bearing plate, a switch point mounted for swinging movement on the bearing plate and comprising a tongue having its forward end beveled and adapted to lie over the top of said rail when the point is in closed posi tion and having a guard flange on the inner side of. the tongue, and a switch rail having its end secured to the heel plate in alignment with said tongue, the said bearing plate having downwardly extending flanges at its side edges, one of which fits against the web of said track rail between the head and flange thereof.

The combination with a main line track rail, of a switch point device comprising a bearing plate extending along the side of the rail with its upper surface spaced. below the level of the top of said rail, means for clamping said plate against the side of the raiha heel plate rigidly secured upon one end of the bearing plate, and having an upstanding rib extending longitudinally thereof, a switch point mounted for swinging movement on the bearing plate and comprising a tongue abutting the rib on said heel plate at one end and beveled at it other end and adapted to lie over the top of said rail when the pointis in closed position, and having a flange on the inner side of the tongue, a pivot pin extending through the rear end of the switch point and through the heel plate and bearing plate and securing such parts together, a switch rail having its end mounted upon the heel plate in alignment with the rib on such plate, and means for securing the end of the switch rail to such rib.
7. The combination with a main line track rail. of a switch point device comprising a bearing plate extending along the side of the rail with its upper surface spaced below the level of the top of said rail, and having a downwardly extending flange along its side edges, one of which its against the web of said track rail between the head and flange thereof, a bolt or rod extending through the flange of the bearing plate on the side remote from the track rail and passing beneath the flanges of such rail with a hook end fitting around the flange on the side of the rail remote from the hearing plate, a switch point mounted for swinging movement on the bearing plate, and switch rail having its end supported upon. the bearing plate in alignment with the switch point.
8.
