.Short nietal bars are usually bent .into U" shape by means ot' a reciprocating mandrel (3o-operating with a die, the bent bars being successively discharged through an opeiiing in the, bottoni of the die. This process, however, is not suitable for bending lon-g .rods or when the Shanks et the U are ot unequal lengths, on account ot the diiliculty ot removing thebent articles.` lIn such cases the rods are usually bent byhand on a fixed mandrel, whereby two operations `are required, one to give the rod ,an 'initial bend and the other for sizing the spacing `between the Shanks. This manner ot operating is slow and costly ,and there is considerable wastage `due chiefly to the production of cra-olie in .the bend.
According Jto this invention I obviate these inconveniences by forcing the metal blanli: through a die open at both ends,V by means lof a mandrel or plunger continuously driven in the saine direction. rlhe bent rod then is discharged behind the die while the nent bending operation talres place, so that the process is very quick and suited to production on a large scale.
In the machine embodying my invention, a plurality of mandrels are mounted one behind the other on an endless carrier and they continuously travel in a longitudinal slot provided in a table onto which the articles to be bent are successively fed. On either side of this slot are arranged stationary guiding members which form together a die open at both ends. Each rod being laid in a given position across the slot is immediately caught by a passing mandrel, pressed against and forced between the guides, whereby it is bent, the bent rod being discharged rearwardly ot the guides.

The machine herein shown comprises a table consisting ot two Vcast iron platesl carried by standards 2 .to 'which they are secured by 1neans,.for example, ot bolts 3 engaging in brackets 4t on the standards and extending through slots 5 in the plates l, whereby the width of ,the :treel space between the plates 1 can be adiustedr u l Under the longitudinal slot 6 thus .termed between the plates l, and. parallel thereto eX- tcnds an endless chain meshing with two carrier pinions 8 one ,oit which is mounted on a driving shaft 8. .On this chain are secured at suitable intervals a number oit mandrels here shown to consist each of `a vrectangi-ilar block 9 of a ydetermined thickness.` The upper side otthe chain 7. is .advantageously `guided in a U-iron l0 andthe inandrels carried thereliy project through the slot 6 and continuously travel in .the same direction along saidslot.
`On either side ot the slot 6 are mounted the guides 11 adapted to co-operate with the mandrels in shaping therods to be bent.
These guides consist ot two blocks whose opposite faces are parallel :tor a .part oit their length and flare at their front ends as shown at 12. When the rods to be bent are of circular cross-section the operatingfaces ot' the guides are preferably curved inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and provided with a projecting upper edge or flange 13 in order to prevent the rods jumping off the table.
`The spacing between the` guide `blocks 11 can be varied by means for instance ot screws 14 engaging the blocks 11 and threading into lugs 15 secured to the plates 1.
One ot the plates 1 further carries two adjustable stops, one 16 next to one of thel is arranged and adjusted so as to bend into U-shape one end of iron rods of circular cross-section. The rods coming from an oven where the end to be benthas been suitably heated are successively laid on the table against the stop 16 and the guides 11 in the position O shown in dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 2. The endless carrier 7 being set in motion one of the mandrels 9 immediately catches the rod and forces it against the flaring faces 12 of the guide blocks, thus bending the rod (position 0') whereupon the rod is forced between the parallel sides of the blocks 11 whence it emerges (position 0) with the proper bend. hile the bending operation takes place the long shank of the rod is forcefully swung inwardly and strikes against the stop 17 whichlimitsl its movement, while the flanges 13 prevent the bent portion flying up. As soon as the bent rod has cleared the front part of the guides a new blank is fed to the next mandrel either by hand or by mechanical means, while the first rod is discharged through the trough 22.
The endless carrier can be actuated with great speed, the rods being bent smoothly and without production of cracks, while the co-operation of the mandrels and guides ensures a very accurate sizing of the hooks formed. The relative lengths of the Shanks of the hooks can be varied by adjusting the position of the stops 16 and (ifrequired)` 17 while the spacing between the shanks can be varied by adjusting the distance between the guide blocks and by replacing the mandrels by others of a different thickness. The machine therefore is adapted to operate on blanks of different sizes, which may require preheating` or not, according to their cross sectional dimensions and the nature of the material treated.
It will be understood that constructional changes may be made in the machine claimed, and that the guides for example may comprise a pair of rollers or the like, without departing from the scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. In a machine for bending metal rods and the like, the combination of a die open at both ends, a mandrel, means for driving said mandrel through said die, means for supporting a blank with one end in front of said die, and means adjacent the path of said mandrel for engaging thie other end of the blank during the bending operation.
2. In a machine for bending metal rods and the like, the combination of a table having a longitudinal slot, a pair of guides arranged on either side of said slot, a stop near one of the said guides, another stop adjacent the edge of said slot nearest the last mentioned guide, a mandrel projecting through said slot, and means for driving said mandrel between and past said guides.
3. In a machine for bending metal rods and the like, the combination of a table comprising two plates separated by a slot, a pair of guiding blocks on either side of said slot, two slots on one of said plates, one near one of said guides and the other near one edge of said slot, means for adjusting the lirst mentioned stop transversely of said table, means for adjusting the last mentioned stop longitudinally of said table, means for adjustingk the width of said slot, means for adjusting the spacing of said blocks, a mandrel projecting through said slot, and means for driving said mandrel between and past said blocks.
4:. In a machine for bending metal rods and the like, the combination of a table comprising two plates separated by a slot, a pair of guiding blocks secured each to one of said plates, the opposite faces of said blocks being parallel to said slot and flaring outwardly, said faces having each a projecting flange along its upper edge, an endless carrier extending under and parallel to said slot, mandr-els on said carrier adapted to travel in said slot and between said blocks, a stop for positioning a blank with one end across said slot, and a stop adapted to cooperate with said flanges in directing the movements of said blank.
