TOY BALLOON.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that JOHN Qnnnn Snvn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, has invented a new and useful Toy Balloon, of which the following is a specification. 1

The present invention has for its purpose the provision of a balloon having a face formed therein or painted or otherwise decorated thereon and capable of floating in the air above the head, in combination with a cap of any suitable shape including an emblem thereon of any suitable secret order, with means for holding the cap upon the balloon, or other floating body.

Another purpose is to provide a toy balloon of this character to be carried by parties or members of any secret order, or otherwise, that is to say, when there is a gather ing thereof, for the purpose of creating merriment or diversion.

A further purpose is to provide a cap to be constructed of relatively light material such as paper, relatively stiff in order that it may be held in shape, the cap carrying extension ears, with means attached thereto and adapted to be connected to the extension of the balloon or floating body, for the purpose of holding the cap upon the same.

Still another purpose is the provision of a balloon or floating body which may be limited in its extensibility due to the diameter of the cap, in order to prevent distortion of the face formed in or painted upon the surface of the floating body. It is possible that if it were not for the cap, the body when inflated may be distended to such a size as to distort the appearance of'the face, hence the idea of limiting the inflatability of the body by means of the cap.

Additionally, the invention has for its purpose the provision of some suitable adhesive for attaching the rear portion of the cap, if s0 desired, to the upper rear portion of the floating body.

Also the floating body has an extension at its lower port-ion for the reception of a nipple through which air or gas may pass for enabling the body so that it will float readily, it being the purpose to utilize asuitable plug for insertion in the nipple to prevent the escape of the air or gas.

It is to be understood that the particulars herein given are in so way limitative and that while still keeping within the scope of the invention, any desired modifications of the detail and desired proportions may be made in the apparatus according to the circumstances.

The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a balloon or floating body which may be constructed of any suitable expansible material, such as relatively thin light rubber. in the wall of which a face may be formed, as in dicated clearly in Fig. 1. This face may, if so desired, be painted upon the wall of thefloating body, in order to give the same results. The floating body has an extension 2 which has an opening therein, so that the body may be inflated with air or suitable gas, whereby the body may floatabove the head. A nipple 3 provided with an opening 4 is inscrtible through the extension so that the air or gas may be injectedinto the body. After supplying air or gas to the interior of the body, a suitable plug 5 may be inserted in the nipple to prevent the escape of the air or gas. This floating body or balloon may be used by members of various secret orders, when gathering at designated places or localities, for creating merriment or diversion for those present. The body has attached thereto a suitable cord or string 6, so as to prevent the release of the balloon. This cord or string may be attached around the extension of the floating body, as indicated at 7. The cord or string holds the extension of the body in the groove 8 of the nipple. The cord or string has a loop 9 at its free end to prevent detachment of the same from the hand of the holder.

Carried by the floating body or balloon is a cap 10 which is provided with a suitable view on line 33 of tassel 11. Upon the front of; the cap a suitable emblem as indicated at 12, of any secret order is attached. The cap may be made of any diameter, so as to limit the expa-nsibility of the balloon or floating body. Attached to dian'ietrically opposite sides of the lower portions of the cap are ears 1?). These ears may be made of relatively thick light material, so that they will hold their shape and their lower ends have openings 1%. The cord or string 6 is made long enough to extend under the balloon and has two end portions 15 attached in the openings 1 The string or cord 6' extends over the ears 13 under the lower portion of the body or balloon and is wound about the extension of the balloon so as to hold the same in the groove of the nipple 3. The rear lower portion of the cap may be attached by any suitable adhesive material asat 16, so as to hold the cap in position upon the floating body or balloon and prevent the same from moving forwardly or rearwardly. The ears 13 may be connected to the cap in any suitable manner, either formed therewith or detachably connected thereto.

The ears 13 may be fastened to the floating body orballoon in any other manner than by the cord or string, possibly by securing the ears 13 adhesively to the floating body or balloon.

Having set forth the invention, what is claimed is:

1. In a toy, the combination with a body to be filled with fluid, of a cap to fit thereon, said body having an extension through which fluid may be injected into the body, and means attached to diametrically opposite portions of the cap" and in turn connected to the extension for holding the cap upon the body.

2. In a toy, the combination with a fluid filled body, of a cap to fit thereon, said body having an extension through which fluid may be injected into the body, and means attached to diametrically opposite lower portions of the cap and in turn connected to the extension for holding the cap upon the body, and means for attaching the rear lower portion to the body.

3. In a toy, the combination with a floating inflatable body, of a cap to engage therewith and being of a diameter to limit the floating body in its inflatabili-ty, and means connected to diametrically opposite lower side portions of the cap and in turn secured to the lower extremity of the floating body to hold the cap thereon.

4'. In a toy, the combination with a floating inflatable body, of a cap to engage therewith and being of a diameter to limit the floating body in its infla-tabili ty, means connected to diametrically opposite lower side portions of the cap and in turn secured to the lower extremity of the floating body to hold the cap thereon, and means for additionally securing the cap to the rear portion of the floating body.

5. Ina toy, the combination with a floating inflatable body, of a cap having a diameter to limit the body in its inflatability, when engaged therewith, ears carried by diametrically opposite lower portions of the cap, and means attached to the lower ends of the ears and connected to the lower extremity of the floating body to hold the cap on the body.

6. In a toy, the combination with an inflated body, of a cap having a diameter to limit the body in its inflatability, when engaged therewith, ears carried by diametrically opposite lower portions of the cap, and means detachably connected to the lower ends of the ears and connected to the lower extremity of the floating body to hold the cap on the body.

7. In a toy, the combination with a floating inflatable body, of a cap having a diameter to limit the body in its inflatability, when engaged therewith, ears carried by diametrically opposite lower portions of the cap, means detachab-ly connected to the lower ends of the ears and connected to the lower extremity of the floating body to' hold the cap on the body, and means for connecting the rear portion of the cap to thebody to additionally hold the former upon the latter.

8. In a toy, the combination with an inflated body, of a cap fitted thereon, and provided with diametrically depending attaching means, and a common member carried by said inflated body and to which said attaching means may be connected.

9. A toy consisting of a floating inflatable body with an opening through which the body may be inflated, a member fitting said opening, and a cap fitting on the body and provided with opposite depending attaching elements to wrap around the wall of the opening to attach the body to the member and retain the cap thereon.

10. A toy consisting of a single floating inflatable body, and a cap fitting thereon and provided with flexible depending elements to attach to the lower part of said inflatable body.

11. A toy balloon consist-ing of an inflated balloon body, a cap having its lower marginal edge fitting the balloon body, depending members attached to diametrically opposite portions of the marginal edge of the cap and conforming to the spherical contour of the balloon body, and means for attaching the lower extremities of said. members to the lower portion of the balloon body.

12. A toy balloon comprising an inflated balloon body with upstanding cap having its marginal edge conforming to and fitting,

a portion of the spherical contour of the balloon body, and means attached to diametrically opposite portions of the marginal edge of the cap and conforming to the balloon body and, in turn, connected to the lower central portion of the balloon body for retaining the cap thereon.

13. A toy balloon comprising a balloon body, an upstanding cap with its marginal edge conforming to and fitting the spherical contour of the balloon body, ears attached to diametrically opposite portions of the marginal edge of the cap, and flexible members attached to the ears and conforming to the spherical contour of the balloon body, the lower central portion of the balloon body having an extension around which the flexible members may be Wrapped for retaining the cap on the balloon body.
