Description

E. B. RIPLEY.
v Bung-Starters. I N0.155,387. Patented Sept.29,1874.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE B. RIPLEY, OF UNIONVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE RIPLEY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUNG-STARTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,387, dated September 29, 1874; application filed August 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE B. RIPLEY, of Unionville, county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bung- Starters, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bungstarter and driver, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describeits construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a rear View of my improved bun g-starter and driver. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the same.
A represents the head, made of hard wood, and substantially of the shape shown in the drawing, and provided with a tapering dovetailed slot to receive the handle. Screws a a may be inserted in the face of the head, to give greater strength and security from the splitting of the head.
The handle is made by being shaved or turned by proper machinery of any suitable length, one end, B, being formed of such shape as to fit the tapering dovetail slot in the head A. The corresponding tapers of the handle and slot admit of the tightening in the head of the handle, acting as a wedge.
The handle is further made of such shape in the central and elastic portion C of the same that the longest diameter of a section of said part is at right angles to the length of the head; or, in other words, such longest diameter is at right angles with the line of stroke when the starter is in use.
The other end, D, of the handle is made of any suitable shape to take hold of.
By the shape of the handle, as described, a much greater elasticity, and consequently a much greater effectiveness, is obtained; at the same time the head is firmly secured to the handle, the tendency of the stroke being to tighten the connection instead of to loosen it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.The within-described bung-starter, consisting of the head A and handle B C D, when said head is united to the handle by a tapering dovetailed connection, and the central part C of the handleis made with its larger diameter at right angles with the line of the stroke, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto afiix my signature this 8th day of August, 1874.
EUGENE B. RIPLEY.
