Be it known'that we, JOHN DmKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, and LEE E. CLOUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sideall Racks and Applicators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in side wall rack and applicator and has for its object the provision of means for conveniently holding and presenting the rolls of side wall material and liner and for applying the former to the carcasses of pneumatic tires. e will advert to the preferred metho of building tires by Way of illustration, which consists in advancing the cores successively before stationary appliances for performing different constructive operations thereon in tire building. This procedure requires that each stage of the work shall be well performed within the minimum period of time, while the materials must be supplied continuously and in the most' convenient manner. i
As will be understood, the side wall material comprises raw gum and is supplied in moderately long strips rolled between a thickness of fabric liner. This material will not permit of placing any undue tension thereon and requires very careful handling on the part ofthe workman.
Briefly adverting to the construction of our improved mechanism, we may state that it comprises essentially a rack adapted for holding the roll of material and liner, preferably mounted on ball bearings, a swing ing bracket having a suitable support and roller for applying the side wall material to the carcass, in association with means for accurately adjusting the height of the appliance to conform with the size of the core operated upon. Preferably, the mechanism is duplicated in order to permit the continuous operation of the workman upon successive carcasses, while means are provided for preventing the bracket from accidentally swinging into the path of the advancing carcass and core, and still further means are employed for automatically rolling the strip of liner as the side wall is withdrawn from its roll. Figure 6 is a plan view of our improved mechanism and Figure 7 is a fragmentary view illustrating the roll of side wall with the strip partially unwound and in position for its application to the carcass.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings we have employed the same character of reference to indicate similar parts.
-The tubular standard 11 contains the adjusting screw, 12, by means of which the rack and the applicator may be raised and lowered. The gage 11 permits the workman accurately to set the appliance for any size of carcass.
The upper right and left hand pottions of our appliance are symmetrical, affording as they do duplicate supports for the rolls of material and correspondingmeans for applying the side wall. Thus, when one roll is exhausted the spring detent 14 may be withdrawn to permit a rotation of the appliance through an arc of 180 so that a new roll of material may be brought into usewhile the emptied roll is replaced by an attendant. Thus, the standard mounts two uprights 15 from which the brackets 16 are pivoted; each being provided with an individual detent 16 for preventing its bracket from swinging on its standard through an arc of more than 90 unless the detent is released, when it may be completely swung to its operative position, shown on the left of Figure 1.
Each bracket is equipped with a handle 16 and mounts the co-acting concave and convex rolls 17, 18 immediately before the guide 19, equi ped with roller 20. The side wall mater1al 21 is led from its reel 22 through the guide 19 and between the rolls 17, 18. It is shaped for application by the concave roll to the side of the carcass 23, caried upon the core 24, as best shown in Figure 2. The liner 25 is wound upon a reel 26, which is frictionally engaged with the disc of reel 22 by means of a depending weight 27. This weight is connected by a flexible cord 27' to the slide 27" which mounts the reel in the slotted upper frame as best shown in Figure o'. The reel 26 is auto matically rotated to wind the liner strip as the side wall material is withdrawn for use. Both of these reels preferably are provided with ball-bearings so that the friction will be negligible.
As the core with its carcass mounted thereon is brought substantially in line with our improved appliance, the workman releases the detent 16 and permits the bracket- 16 to be swung into its operative position indicated in Figure 6. The core is then slowly rotated and the roll 18 serves to press the side wall material firmly into engagement with the carcass, upon which it firmly adheres asthe workman applies pressure by means of the handle 16". The side wall material is then cut to the proper length when the core has made one complete revolution, and the bracket is swung back in order to clear the core and permit its advance for the next successive step in completing the carcass. Inasmuch as the bracket is pivoted substantially in the axis of the reel 22 no undue tension is placed upon the side wall material in swinging the bracket to and from its operative position. More over, the gum strip is supported by the guide and shaped by the convex and concave rolls, so that it is thereby adapted for immediate application to the side of the carcass, upon which it adheres when rolled into place. It is impracticable to provide reels of any considerable length but as the exhausted reel may be replaced while material upon the opposing reel is being fed to the carcass, only a minor delay results in bringing first one side and then the other of our appliance into its operative position as shown on the left in Figure l.
' Having now described the preferred embodiment of our invention, we claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, the following 1. In an appliance of the class described, the combination with a support for ahorizontal reel of sidewall material, of an ex tension therefrom in substantially the same horizontal plane as the reel; said extension mounting a guide and contoured rol'ls for shaping and pressing the side wall material upon the ca'rcass, substantially as set forth.
2. In an appliance of the class described, the combination with a vertically adjustable standard or support, of a reel of side wall material rotatably mounted thereon, a swinging extension carried by said support,
a guide thereon, and a contoured roll in line therewith adapted to apply the side wall, substantially as set forth.
3. In an appliance of the class described,
the combination with a standard, of two the combination with a horizontal reel for side wall material and liner, of a frictionally rotated reel for the liner, a. l)ivoted bracket swinging in the horizontal plane of said reels, and a guide and applicator roll mounted at the free end of said bracket, adapted to be swung into and out of operative position for applying the side wall material, substantially as set forth.
6. In an appliance of the class described, the combination with a horizontal reel for side wall material and liner, of an associated reel for the liner, a supporting bracket pivoted to swing in. substantially the hori zo-ntal plane of the reel, and a guide and applicator roll mounted at the swinging end of said bracket, substantially as set forth.
7. In an appliance of the class described, the combination with a receptacle for side wall material, of an applicator member as sociated therewith and pivoted to swing approximately in the axis and plane of said receptacle, substantially as set forth.
8. In an appliance of the class described, the combination with a horizontal reel for side wall material, of an applicator member pivoted in silibstantially the horizontal planeof said reel said member having a contoured applicator roll and a guide near its free end, substantially as set forth.
