G;G.YODER UMBRELLA HOLDER Filed June 22. 1922 Patented Sept. 8, 1925 GULDIN G. YODER, 0F BUYER-TOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA HOLDER.
Application filed June 22, 1922. Serial No. 570,280.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GULDIN G. Yoonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyertown, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in umbrella holders, and has for its prime object to provide a holder adapted to be applied to the back of the front seat of an automobile.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder of the above indicated character that will hold an umbrella in a folded upright position so that in case the umbrella is placed in the holder while in a Wet condition, the water will have an opportunity to drain off of same.
A still further object is to provide an umbrella holder of the above indicated character, which is pivotally mounted in a bracket having means for supporting the holder in an operative position, and means carried by the bracket and forced into engagement with the holder for holding same in an inoperative position to prevent said holder from swinging against the back of the seat.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a foot rest for the umbrella in connection with the above stated holder, wherein said foot rest is adapted to be positioned in the floor of the car directly under the holder and provided with an opening in the bottom of the foot rest so that the drippings from the umbrella may pass through the floor of the automobile, thus preventing the floor from becoming soiled from the drippings of same.
An additional object of my invention is to provide an umbrella holder of the above indicated character, which is simple in construction, durable, eflicient for the purpose intended, and one that can be manufactured and installed on an automobile at a relatively low cost.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and is specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and which clearly illustrates the construction of same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an umbrella holder constructed in accordance with my invention, showing same applied to the back of the front seat of an auto mobile. 7
Figure 2 is a vertical section of same.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows,
Figure et is a front elevation of my improved holder, and V Figure 5 is a sectional view of the umbrella foot rest, adapted to be mounted in the floor of the automobile.
Referring to the drawing in detail, like characters will be used to designate like parts in the different views.
In the drawing, thenumeral 1 indicates a portion of the body of an automobile of any make, 2 the front seat, 3 the back of the seat, and 4 the floor of the automobile.
A bracket comprising a plate 5 is attached to the back 3 of the front seat 2 as is clearly indicated in Figure 1, and is provided with a slotted aperture 6, the purpose of which will be better understood as the description follows. The plate 5 has arms 7 formed integral with same, the arms 7 being positioned on opposite sides of the slotted aperture 6 and are at right angles to the plate 5.
A lever 8 is pivotally mounted as at 9 between the arms 7, and the portion of the lever 8 projecting beyond the extreme ends of the arms 7 is formed with a ring 10 into which is inserted an umbrella 11 as is clearly indicated in Figure 1. The lever 8 is provided with a shoulder 12. A trip 13 is pivotally mounted as at 14 between the arms 7 at a point adjacent the lower edges of same and at a point where the arms 7 extend outwardly from the plate 5. The trip 13 is provided with a shoulder 15, which is adapted to be held into engagement with the shoulder 12 carried by the umbrella supporting lever 8. A spring 16 is secured to the plate 5 at a point between the arms 7 and just below the aperture 6. As is indicated in Figure 2, the free end of the spring 16 bears against the trip 13, which holds same into engagement with the shoulder 12 formed on the umbrella lever 8, so that the latter is held in a horizontal position when supporting an umbrella therein.
Secured to the floor of the automobile as at 17 is a tubular foot rest 18, which is pro- Vided with a series of spaced openings 19, adjacent the bottom of same, so that in case an umbrella is positioned within the holder, the water from same will enter the tubular chamber 18 and pass through the openings 19, thus preventing the floorofthe preventing same trom swinging back and r The ring 10 of forth and marring same. the lever Sis provided with athumh piece 22, by which the same may be moved into a horizontal position.
In view of the foregoing description ofmy invention taken in connection with the" accompanying :drawing, it is thought that any further explanation as to'- the objects and construction of same are unnecessary;
lvhile I havei descr bed the preferred form ofmy 1nvent1on,. I real1ze that various minor 1 changes may be" resorted to, a
without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, and therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor to the combination and arrangement of: parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters "Patent is:
An umbrella holder comprising a plate "provided with an opening and having outs tandingparallel arms at the opposite side of the openlng, a sprlng secured at one end to the plate and having its intermediate and;
end portions received in theppening, said SPIIDO being located between the arm, alever having a circular head-portion pivoted at its center between the-arm, said 1ever-be= ing provided: at its outer end-with a ringv which is d sposed beyond the'edges ofthe arms, the said circular head portion of the lever belng provlded- Wltllitll outstanding shoulder, and a trip pivoted between the arms at a point between the spring and-thecircular head 7 of the lever,isaid spring bearing at its outer surface adjacent the-trip and thetrip having atapoint between its ends a shoulder adapted; to engage jthe shoulder upon the circular head of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I haveaffixed- I my slgnature.
