UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL HUFF, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO DODGE BROTHERS INC., A CORPORATION OCE' MARYLAND.
CRIMPING '.rooL.
Application i1edJ'u1y'26, 1921. Seriall No. 487,7()5.
To (/.ZZ 207mm t may concern: Y Be it known that I, RUSSELL HUFF, a
citizen of the United States, residing 'at- Detroit, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Crimping Tools, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This invention relates to metal crimping tools and more particularly to crimping tools for crimping a ferrule or similar article upon a handle or other carrier.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the construction and mode of operation of crimping tools of this type and to produce a tool of comparatively simple construction by which a ferrule or similar article may be crimped upon a carrier in a reliable manner.
With the above object in view, the invention co-mprises the novel and improved features, constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the advantages of which will be readily understood Aand appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention in its preferred form .and the following detailed description of the constructions therein shown.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a tool embodying the inventionvwith certain parts removed to show more clearly the structure Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the tool; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation of a leaf spring forming a part of the tool;
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the crimping tool comprises a guide block 2 mounted o-n a supporting brac (et 3 adapted to be secured to a bench or other suitable support. This guide block is formed with an interior guideway, preferably cylindrical in form, in which is mounted to slide axially of the guideway a cylindrical slide block or head 4 which carries the crimping jaws. The slide block 4 is provided with a series of suitably formed guideways in which are slidably mounted a series of jaw carrying slides 6 arranged radially on the slide block. The slides 6 are held in the guideways in the slide block by means of a retaining plate 8. Each of the slides 6 is formed at its inner end with a crimping jaw indicated at 9 arranged to engage the end of a ferrule or similar `article applied to a handle or other carrier.
The'cover plate 8 is provided with a central opening 10 through which a carrier with the article tobe crimped thereon may be inserted lbetween the crimping jaws.
The slide block 4 is normally held in 'its' upper position with relation to the 'guide block 2 by means of a coiled spring l2. When the slide block is in its upper position in the guide block, the slides 6 are held in retracted position by means of a spring plate 14 attached to the slide block 4, the upwardly bent arms'of which engage respectively projections on the slides 6. The spring plate 14 is secured to the slide block 4 by means of a screw 1 6, the head of whichy is arranged to be engaged Vby the end of the ferrule tov be crimped Vand act as a stop to-determine the axial position of the same.
The slides 6 are moved inwardly toY carry the crimping jaws together into crimplng engagement with the end of the ferrule by the downward movement of the slide block 4 in the guide block 2. During this inwardly together. To
into the slide block 4. This rod is connected at its lower end with a hand lever 22 pivoted at 24 on a bracket secured to the support l.
Fig. 2 of the drawing illustrates a handle 26, such as is commonly used for automobile doors, with a ferrule 28 in place between the crimping jaws 9 of the tool ready for the crimping operation.
In the operation of the tool in crimping a ferrule upon a door handle as shown, t-he ferrule is placed upon the end of the handle and the handle with the ferrule thereon is inserted through the opening 10 in the cover plate 8 between the crimping jaws until the outer end of the ferrule is engaged with the upper end of the screw 16. This locates the ferrule so that the crimping jaws 9 will engage the inner end of the ferrule.V The lever .22 is then swung downwardly, thereby moving the crimping jaws inwardly together into engagement with the inner end of the ferrule and crimping vthisV end of the ferrule tightly against the handle.
The tool above described is simple, compact and durable in construction and is composed of relatively few parts., vso that it may be cheaply manufactured. 'The device may be ,readily varied .ign construction to suit ferrules ,or .other articles of different shapes and dimensions. l
t vis to be understood that the :invention is not limited .to Ythe particular construction and arrangement of parts of the illustrated embodiment .of the invention, but that the invention .may `be .imbodied .in other forms within the scope of the claims.
Having `ei'iplained the nature .and object o f the invention and Yhaving speciically .described a .tool ,embodying the invention in its preferred (form, what is claimed is:
1. A crimping tool having', in combination, a hollow guide block having an interior guideway, a hea-d .slidably .mounted in said guideway, a. series of crimping ljaws movably mounted .on .said .head and arranged about and facing Vtoward a. central point, means carried by the guide block for moving Vsaid .crimping aws inwardly during movement of said head in one directionin said guideway, and a fixed stop on said head to locate the work with ,relation lto the crimpingjaws. v
:2. A crimping tool having, in Vcombination, a hollow guide block having .an interior guideway, a head islidably mounted in said guideway, .a series `of `crimping jaws .movably .mounted on vsaid head and ranged about and fencing ...toward a central point, fineans'carried by the gnideblock for moving said .crimping jaws inwardly during movement .of :said head in one direction in said guideway, ya spring .arranged :centrally of the -tool .fand having .a series off arms textending angulanly .from the tbody thereof in the `.general direction of the. axis of vthe 'tjool for moving Ithe icrimping ja-ws outwardly,
and astud for .holding .the spring-plate in position :constituting a stop fto locate the work with relation to the crimping jaws.
3. A crimping tool having, in combination, a Ahollow lguide block having an `interior guideway, 'a head slidably mounted in said .guideway, a series of crimping jaws movably mounted on said head and arranged about vand facing toward a central point, means carried by the guide block for moving said crimping jaws inwardly together vduring the movement of said head in one direction in lsaid guideway, a spring to hold the head normally in` position in vthe guid'eway with the Acrimping jaws retracted, and a lever for. moving the head against the action of the spring to actuate the `crimping j awe.
4, A :crimping tool having, in combination, ,a hollow guide block having a cylindrical guideway, a. cylindrical head mounted to slide in the guideway, a series of crimpin g aws'movably Amounted on the head and arranged about the axis'of the same, aspring to hold the head `normally `in position in the guideway with the Acrimping jaws retracted,
yielding means for holding Vthe crimpingV jaws in -retracted positions, a conical cam surface fo-rmed on the guide block for .moving the crimping jaws inwardly together during the movement of the head in one direction in `the guideway, and a lever for moving the .headaga'iiist the action of the .spring to actuate the crimping jaws. f
5. A crimping tool having, in combination, a hollow guide block .hav-ing an interior guideway, `a head slidably ymounted in said guideway, a series o-f crimping jaws movably mounted .in said head .and arranged .radially about and facing toward a central ,point, a. spring plate arranged centr-ally of ,the tool and having' arms for holding the j aws normally in =retracted positions, means operated by the relative movement of vthe .guide block and head in one direction for .moving the yjaws inwardly together, Aand means for moving the head.
Signed at Detroit, Mich., this 20th day of .July 1921.
