To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Isrnno MAGEM, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Navas, in the Province of Barcelona, Spain, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Multiple-Tool Holders for Lathes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a multiple, rotary, vertical tool-holder for lathes. Gne of the objects of this invention is to obtain a suitable tool-holder for the above-mentioned class of machines, and one which shall include all the tools or apparatus nec essary for any particular class of lathework.
Another of the objects of the invention is based on the fact that in the use of the said tool-holder the changes of too-ls are made in an extremely rapid and simple manner without requiring the employment of any accessory tools or apparatus whatever. And, lastly, another object achieved by the invention of this tool-holder is the retention and fixing of the movable part of the said tool-holder in each of the positions which it may occupy, such fixing or retention being obtained in an automatic manner and taking place in such a way that it prevents all movement or vibration of the tools, pro vided, of course, that the tool-holder is properly secured to the tool post of the machine,

Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the whole of the said tool-holder. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are sections of the same, based on planes which pass through A--A, B-B, and C-G of the foregoing, and Fig.5 represents in section the details of the lever or working clutch of the said tool-holder.
This tool-holder comprises a body of cylindrical or polygonal form composed of two parts 1 and 2, of which the first has in one of its faces a cylindrical cavity into which fits an excrescence of similar form presented by the second; and both of them carry on the plane surfaces, by means of which they are in contact, radial teeth which keep them engaged in a determinated sense of rotation. The part 1 is provided with an arm or prolongation 3, adapted to be fixed to the tool post of the lathe. The

part 2 has in its edge certain cavities or hollows 4, into which fit the tools 5, which are fixed to the part in question by means of screws 6, provided for the purpose.
The teeth 7 which are equal in number to the number of tools which the apparatus can employ, are of helicoid profile, so that they prevent in one sense the revolution of the part 2 over the part 1 and thus the with drawal of the tool when it comes into action on the piece which is being worked, and, on the other hand,-facilitate the movement in a contrary sense when the tools are being changed.
Fixed on to the part 2 there is an axle 10, which passes through the part 1 and has, mounted on the protruding part of the latter, a ratchet wheel 11, fixed to it in a rotary sense by means of the key 13, though it remains free in a longitudinal sense, the part llhaving also itself a cavity into which fits a spiral spring 15, by whose action the two parts 1 and 2 are always maintained in proper mutual relation.
Thechange of tools, that is to say, the revolution of the part 2 over the part 1 is effected by means of a lever 9, which is mounted freely on the axle 10, and which has a protuberance or key 14 which enters between the teeth 12, which form portion of the part 11, so that when it works on the lever 9, in a determined sense, the revolution is produced of the part 2 over the part 1, on which it is mounted.
To prevent the lever 9, in any of the positions which it may occupy, from being a hindrance to the work, it is arranged in such a way that the key 14, whenever it is considered desirable, is separated from the teeth 12, and then the lever is placed in the position which appears most convenient. For this purpose the key 14 is prolonged in a journal 15, which presents a longitudinal opening 16, into which can enter the end, in the form of a wedge 17, of a rod 18, which fits into the arm of the lever 9, the said rod 18 terminating in a button 19, which protrudes at the end of the abovementioned arm, and the arrangement is completed by springs 20 and 21, thanks to whose action the key 14 has a constant tendency to place itself between the teeth 12 of the ratchet wheel 11.

materials of which it is constructed, and in everything that does not affect its essential qualities.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a multiple tool holder of the character set forth, an arm adapted to be secured to the tool post of a lathe, a recessed head integrally extending from said arm, a clamping member partly extending into said head and presenting a plurality of radially directed tool sockets, tool clamping means for each socket, complementary sets of teeth on the opposing faces of said head and said clamping member equal in number to said tool sockets and adapted to allow of relative rotary displacement of said head and said clamping member in one direction only, a yieldable connection between said head and 9 said clamping member for normally keeping presenting a plurality of radially directed,
outwardly opening tool clamping sockets, ratchet means interposed between said head and said clamping member for relatively rotating said parts on one another in one direction only and for interlocking them in predetermined relative positions, a shaft rigidly rectangularly extending from the center of said clamping member, said head freely riding on said shaft, a ratchet member mounted on said shaft with capability of longitudinal displacement thereon but prevented from relative rotary displacement, yieldable means interposed between said ratchet member and said head for normally reeping said clamping member pressed firmly against said head, and means for relatively stepping ahead said clamping member, comprising ratchet teeth on said ratchet member and a handled toothed mem her for cooperation with the teeth of said ratchet member.
3. In a multiple tool holder according to claim 2, an angular handle presenting a head annulus freely surrounding said shaft, a toothed slide bolt operable in the short handle arm designed for cooperation with the teeth of said ratchet member, spring means normally keeping said slide bolt in engagement with said ratchet teeth, and means for temporarily disconnecting said slide bolt and said ratchet member, comprising a slide rod axially displaceable in the longer handle arm and its inner extremity designed for retracting cooperation with said slide bolt and its outer extremity extending from the respective handle extremity, and resilient means for normally retaining said slide rod in its relative inoperative position.
