UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID ELKAN, OF FINSBURY SQUARE, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-TIP HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 55,076, dated September 15, 1874 application filed July 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID ELKAN, of Finsbury Square, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain Improvement in Umbrella-Tip Gaps; and. I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon-that is to say:
This invention relates to a device for keepng the ribs of an umbrella close to the stick when not in use.
Heretofore these caps have worked upon a sleeve or band of metal encircling the stick and secured thereon, and great inconvenience has been experienced by the said caps working loose and releasing the umbrella-rib tips.
My improvement consists in a novel arrangement of parts, whereby the possibility of the rib-tips being released is removed; the stick is not weakened by the fixture, and the device is easily adjusted and placed in position.
Upon the sleeve or band fitting the stick is secured a second sleeve of larger diameter, thus forming a receptacle or annular space between the inner and outer sleeves, and a spiral spring is adjusted to and placed in the said receptacle. The tip-cap is formed on a short tube, which is passed over the inner sleeve between it and the outer one, forming the receptacle for the spiral spring, which spring acts upon the upper edge of the sleeve of the cap. A slot (L-shaped) is made in the sleeve of the cap, and a pin or stud is passed throughthe said slot, and is secured to the inner and outer sleeve; or this pin may constitute the means of fastening the device in its position on the stick. The lower edge of the inner sleeve is burred to keep the tip-cap and the inner and outer sleeves together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the device complete; Fig. 2, a plan; Fig. 3, a section at .40 :0, Fig. 2; and Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views of detached parts.
a is the sleeve fitting the stick; I), the second sleeve secured upon or forming part of sleeve a; c, the receptacle formed of the two sleeves a and b; e, the tip-cap; and d, the spring, which acts upon the upper edge of the sleeve of the cap. f is the burr, formed on the lower edge of the sleeve a.
Having now described my invention, I claim- A tip-retainer for umbrellas and parasols, composed of the sleeve on 1), cap 0, and spring d, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of March, 1874.
DAVID ELKAN.
