H. BARNES GOLF CLUB Filed May '7, 1923 INVENTOR H BMW ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEFFBON BARNES, OF YORKVILLE, NEW YORK.
. I p GOLF Application filed May 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEFFRON BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yorkville, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlng.
My invention relates to a golf club and I declare the following to be a full complete, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to the like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a golf club that will allow for adjustment between the head and handle thereof, whereby to adapt the club to the proper stance of the individual player.
The object will be understood by referring to the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the golf club:
Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the lower end of the handle. employed, the upper end being broken away:
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the head of the golf club, showing the side used for hitting the golf ball, the handle being broken away;
Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing an end elevation of the head and handle of the golf club, the handle being broken away;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the head of the golf club;
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a screw bolt employed;
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a hollow screw bolt used to co-operate with the bolt of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a key used;
Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a modification, showing a club adapted for a right or left hand player, the handle being broken away;
Fig. 10 is a further modification of a club for a right or left hand player, showing a side elevation thereof.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device embodies a handle --1 the upper part of which is wound with leather 2 to aid in gripping said handle 1.
CLUB.
1923. Serial No. 637,170.
The lower part of the handle 1 has three depending annular tongues 3, 3, 3 formed integral with handle 1. Tongues 3 are equipped in each instance with a central recess 4: and are adapted to mesh in the three corresponding recesses 5 formed between like annular tongues 6 made integral with the head or butt end 7 of the golf club. A. recess 8 is made through each of the tongues 6 of head 7, which recesses are adapted to aline, when tongues 3 of handle 1 are properly assembled, with the recesses of said tongues 3, whereby toallow for the disposition therethrough of a. hollow cylindrical headed bolt 10.
A square shaped recess 15 is formed in the headed end of hollow bolt 10. Said recess 15 is adapted for the insertion of the proper end 16 of a key 17 whereby to aid in turning said hollow bolt 10 upon screw bolt 12.
The two extreme outer tongues 6, 6, of head 7 are furnished, in each instance, with a countersunk recess 18, whereby to permit the respective heads of bolts 10 at the one end and 12 at the other to fit flush with the outer surface of their respective tongues 6 of head 7.
A graduated scale is represented at 20, whereby to correctly adjudge the proper angle for setting the head 7 with respect to handle 1 in order to conform to the users stance.
The surface of head 7 used to strike the golf ball, is formed to project out slightly as at 22 from part 23, in order to localize hand player.
the surface adapted for striking the golf ball. Said surface is serrated as at 21.
In operation, the user of the club, will before starting to play, gauge his proper stance and then set the head 7 relative to handle 1 accordingly in a rigid manner by inserting the end 16 of key 17 into recess to tighten hollow bolt 10 upon bolt 12 and, thereby, draw tongues 3 and 6 tightly together to hold said head 7 and handle 1 rigidly in set position.
Fig. 9 shows a modification embodying a golf club adapted to be used by a right or a left hand player. The head is made with a central recess or socket adapted for the disposition" of the lower reduced end of handle 31. Said handle 31 is pivoted to head 25 at 32 and is held in relation to head 25 by a hollow bolt 10 and screw bolt 12, as employed in the former construction. Slots 40, allow the movement of handle 31 relative to head 25.
Fig. 10 shows a further modification of a club adapted to be used by a rightor left The parts are assembled in the same manner, as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive. The handle 1 here, however, can be turned through an angle, whereby to adapt the club for a right or left hand user thereof, as in Fig. 9.
Having thus described my invention what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, and a plurality of tongues formed on said shaft for holding said head at any given angle relative to said shaft, whereby to conform said club to the stance of the user thereof.
2. In a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, said head having a plurality of walls forming sockets, and said shaft having a plurality of tongues adapted to fit into said sockets, and means for binding said tongues and walls together, whereby to hold said head relative to said shaft to conform said club to the stance of the user thereof.
3. In a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, said head having a plurality of tongues forming sockets, said shaft having a plurality of tongues adapted to fit into said sockets, and a headed bolt being countersunk for holding said tongues together, whereby to fix said head relative to said shaft to conform the club to the stance of the user thereof.
4. In a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, said head having a plurality of tongues forming sockets, said shaft having a plurality of tongues'adapted to fit into said sockets, a hollow belt, a second bolt adapted to fit into said first named bolt, whereby to hold said head relative to said shaft to conform the club to the stance of the user thereof, and the second bolt having alug adapted to prevent said bolt from turning relative to the head.
5. In a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, said head having a plurality of tongues forming sockets, said shaft having a plurality of tongues adapted to fit into said sockets, a hollow bolt, a second bolt adapted to fit into said first named bolt, whereby to hold said head relative to said shaft to conform the club to the stance of the user thereof, an aperture in said head, said second named bolt having a lug adapted to fit into said aperture to prevent said bolt from turning relative to the head and said first named hollow bolt having a recess to allow for turning the same.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
HEFFRON BARNES.
