Description

LOCK
Filed Feb. 13. 1922 Patented Aug. 18, 1925.
WILLIAM GANZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Application flled Februaxy 13, 1922. Serial N6. 535,979.
T0 all w7zom it mag; ccm0e1n: Be it known that I, WILLIAM GANZ, a
citizen of the United States, 1esicling at' Chicago, in the county of Co'ok and State of Ill1nols, h'aveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lecks, of which the followmg is a specification.
The object of this invention is to protect, locks from drilling, cutting or other destruc; t1ve attacks by Which oriininals have hereto fore been able tor.elease them without the aid of a proper key.
More specifically, it is an object 01 tl1e invention to cover the parts exposed to attack- With harolened steel so as to render the tools c ustomanly used so ineflective as to be pract1cally use less.
Another object of the invention is to pi0-fi both the barrel and the plug vide faces of of a cylinder lock with a. ha.rdened armor that Will make it practically impossible to use a drill in the manner heretofore customary in opening locks ofthis kind; 7
Further objects will becom'e apparent as the description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention in which.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectioh showing a cylinder lock et1uipped with my invention anal applied to the steeringgear of an qutomobile;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the-line 22 of- Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of Fig. 15 Fig. 4 1s an enla-rged longitudinal section from the rig ht showing the improvg1structure in detail;
and Fig. 5 is a trans verse Section -on the line 5-5 of Fig.4.
Refenring to the drawing, indicates a, casing or other element in which the lock is adapted tobe mount6d am]. secured ii1 place by screws 11 or the like. l 2 indicates a.loolt adapted t0 be shifted by the eccentric pin 13 carried by the back-platze 14 secured to the rear end of the plug 15 by screws 16.
'Ihe plug 15 is pfeiferably made of two semi-cylindrical pieces 17 secured together at their rear ends by the back plate 14 and ab their front ends by the cap 18'. In the ordinary construction, tl1is cap 18 i s replaced by a collar of the same mater1al as the pieces 17, 'usually brass or bronze. Ac-
cording" to my invention, this cap is 01 hardened steel und is seoured to the pieces 17 by'the pins 19 orany other si1itable fas tenings; This cap covers the entiie face of the plug except for the narrow slot necessary to admit the key 20.
The plug is 'mountecl in a barrel 21 as usual, and I preferably provide the barrel with a harclend steel jacket or a casing 22 having a flange 23 fitting down over the face of the cap 18 und presenting a curveol outer surface 24.- This jacket or casing may be se}i:ured t0 the barrel by sorews.25 01 the li e.
The plug is her shown concen'tric with the barrel but it may be eccentrio to the barrel, in Which case the opening inthe flange 23 will be cdncentrio with the plug.
The presence 'of the hardened steel cap 18 makes it practically impossible to attzick the plug from the freut with 'any of the tools ordinarily available for criminal purposes, 4
and the jacket 22 surrounding the plug and barrel throughout the-ir entire length and presenting the curved, hardened face 24 a1i the front, makes it practically impossible to attack the lock from any direction except the real Which ordinarily is inaccessibl'e.
By .applying the cap 18 to the pieces 17 of the plug in place 01 the customary collar, the plug may be manufactured with but slightly more expense than the plugS ab present in use. In some instances.tl1e cap 18 Will afl'ord. all the protection tl1at the lock requires, but in other cases it will be very desirable to make use of the hardened casing 22 also, in order to protect the entire face of the lock .and the sides. The plug and barrel can be ma'de up and furnished in the usual manner, and the casings or jackets 22 may be made in Standard sizes and supplied in cases Where the protection afl'orded by the cap 18 is thought to be insuflicient.
I am aware that changes may be made in the -form, construction and arrangement. I' the invention, as set forth in the selected embodiment herein, withoutdeparting from thg= scope o r sacrificing any of its material advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall with-q in the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a lock;- the combination of a barrel, v
' "pieqes; im hardned steel'cap embfacin th e" plug pieces at one end of the plug, an fastening means 'securing the' cap to the plug. 2. In a-lock, the combination of a barrel,
' a plug rotatably mounted in said barrel and comprising two semi-bylindrioal pie0es, a,
back-plate, fastening means securing the back-plante to the rear ends of said pieces,
' a Plug rotatably mounted therein, a Protec'ting -face of hardened steel securedto the fron1zend of saidplug, and a hardened flange .at its front end overlapPing sai d protecting face.
4. In a lock, the combination of-a barrel, a plug rotatably mounted therein, a protecting face of hardened steel sec'ured to the front end of said p1ug and overlapping the face of said banal, and a jacket of hardened sfeel surrounding said barrel and plug and having a front flange overlapping said prov tecting face.
WILLIAM GANZ.
